[WISPA] Factoid

2007-01-02 Thread Peter R.
http://telephonyonline.com/regulatory/commentary/net_neutrality_dies_070706/

While the average household currently downloads about 2 gigabytes worth
of Web content each month, the dramatic proliferation of new
technologies influencing the use of the Internet--from streaming video
to full-length movie downloads to the manipulation of ever larger data
files--could soon see consumption by residential broadband users
averaging hundreds or thousands of gigabytes each month. Without
enhancements to the nation’s Internet infrastructure, this increased
demand could soon slow the Internet down to a crawl.

RE: [WISPA] 5.3/5.8 GHz Antenna Suggestion

2007-01-02 Thread Marketing
Hello Tim,

When purchasing the grids the next time, select the HDGD58-29 antennas.
These come with a new L-Bracket that attaches to the reflector in 4
locations. The L-Bracket is also tapped for easy installation. This can be
seen on page 2 of the spec sheet:

http://pacwireless.com/products/GD58_Data_Sheet.pdf

If needed, these new L-Brackets will accommodate a 4" U-Bolt (U-Bolts not
provided).

Drop me your address and we can send you a sample of the L-bracket.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Mac,
Have PacWireless made any changes to the mount on the 29db grids... I have 4

in use and the mount isn't very solid. The grid deflects a lot in the wind.
I can watch the signal go up and down as it moves.

U.S. Wireless Online is a conglomeration. Originally it was started by
buying at bankruptcy the assets of late firms like Darwin Networks. A
few years later they merged with Air2LAN (Jai Baghat's old company) out
of Jackson, MS. They then rolled up a number of WISPs. So they got old
MY customers, some Wi-Fi customers, some hotspot business, some
traditional WISP business, etc. Lots of different brands in there,
including us among many others.

So I suppose it'd be tricky to get a good count that we easily compare
with WISP pure play type business.

I don't know if they bought ShreveNet. That might have been MobilePRO.
MobilePRO bought a number of Alvarion WISPs, including the former DHR in
Ft. Myers.

RE: [WISPA] US Wireless Online Sells 50.1 Percent

2007-01-02 Thread Patrick Leary
Wrong. Allen ran Alvarion for years. Here are a few posts to prove it:
>From 2001:
>However, the retrans are hitting around 20%-30%. I can't figure out
>what the problem could be.

Lots to check out..

First make sure Max Rate is set to 1Mbps. The reason is that your 89-91
RSSI falls in the 1Mbps threshold:

RSSI > 108 3Mbps
95 < RSSI < 1082Mbps
RSSI < 95 1Mbps

Some of those retrans might be the radio making futile attempts to try 2
and 3Mbps.. So make sure Multirate is enabled and Max Rate is set no
higher than the RSSI will allow.

Second log into the radio and go to 4) Site Survey then 1) Traffic
Statistics and 1) Display Counters.. Midway you will see something like
this:

  Total tx errors :1
 (H/W: 0, ABR: 0, CSL: 0, ACKTOUT: 0)
 (FAIL: 0, ACKCRC: 0, RTSC: 0, EOD: 1)

These 8 error types tell the whole story.. CSL errors means there is
lots of noise in the area and the radio is having a hard time finding
clean air to transmit into.. ACKTOUT is if your Ack Delay is set wrong
(low for a few miles, med for up to 9 miles, and high for double digit
distances). RTSC is the booger.. That is a RTS Collision in theory (if
everything else is perfect in the RF link).
But anything can cause a RTSC from a badly engineered link to water in a
connector.. In general, it means either the client or AP is having a
hard time hearing one another - someone is not responding..
If you drive down CSL errors, RTSC errors can go down too. That is,
there is a relationship between these errors.. A good start is to read
the manual's brief explanation of the error types.. Then start on CSL
errors and save RTSC errors for last in your attack plan..

Hidden node.. my god

It's all in the error counters.. This is one of the big benefits of
using BAII.. It will tell you what the problem is unlike most WLAN gear
that just basically say "error causing a restransmission" and little
more.

Are the retrans caused primarily by RTS collisions? CRC errors? CTS
errors?
AckDelay? You typically don't get this level of detail from most gear..

The counters tell if you if the problem is on the LAN side, WAN side,
due to interference, due to a bad cable, due to bad LOS issues, etc.

Observe and learn to read the 4->1->1 screen to see what is going on..
See: http://www.wispfaq.com/searchfaq.html?id=53

Hidden node... Jeez Charles.. If you would just act with a little
more principle, I bet more folks (like me) would have more confidence
in you... I suppose Karlnet is the solution to these two folks
problems?! Why even reply to an Alvarion post as a vendor if you
don't even sell Alvarion?

Does this sound like hidden node?

 >One day everything is fine, about 1 1/2 weeks ago things started
 >happening

Jeez.. Sorry but hidden node doesn't suddenly hit you out of the blue!

Then they are clueless is all. Its not because they spent money
on Alvarion. I spent $25k on a 8 sector Alvarion POP a few
years ago. Very nice and expensive. It is now loaded up. We have
only lost 2 wireless users in our whole career, at this is in the
heart of both DSL and Roadrunner territory.

It is not enough to simply spend a bunch of money or even to build
a good network. A good network is living and breathing and it must
be maintained, monitored, groomed, expanded, and all sorts of time
consuming activities.. And that is only the beginning! ;-) (won't
mention email and tech support)

The revenue off this single $25k POP is now close to that figure
every month FWIW and is one of the sweetest investments I've ever
made. My only regret is not building 10 of them...

Chris/Ron:

We started out with a MY-TE years ago, it was very heavy and cumbersome
to operate. We now have customized a Reese hitch adapter with an AB
Chance winch with foot pedal control. This capstan works great for WISP
installations.

If you are looking for a capstan, watch the tower-pro list on Yahoo.
You never know you might stumble onto a great buy.

If you like more info on my used MY-TE drop me a line off list.

Check out the links above for more information on the AB Chance winch
and accessories.

Hang tight there Brad, according to that post, Allen, who was flipping

He certainly was leaning towards Trango and I remember when Trango upped
the prices and let Charles and the others handle end sales, he was kinda
pissed and ranted.

Sound familiar?

So he was linking Trango at that time, and MT as well.

Yes, MobilePro bought ShreveNet along with Kite and a few others.

RE: [WISPA] US Wireless Online Sells 50.1 Percent

2007-01-02 Thread David Weddell
US Wireless made a big announcement last year about teaming with Lightyear
Network, also based in Louisville to bring wireless and VOIP to the world.
It lasted about 4-6 months then fell apart. US Wireless is good at making
big announcements but nothing much has materialized as of yet.

They mainly focus on commercial accounts only and have cellular service as
well. I have been watching US Wireless closely for the last year. I guess if
you have one tower in 18 big cities, you can claim what they claim??

RE: [WISPA] US Wireless Online Sells 50.1 Percent

2007-01-02 Thread Ralph
Here in Atlanta I used to see their SSID on 802.11. They had some APs up on
a couple of buildings around Vinings and Cumberland Mall.
Haven't seen them in several years

US Wireless made a big announcement last year about teaming with Lightyear
Network, also based in Louisville to bring wireless and VOIP to the world.
It lasted about 4-6 months then fell apart. US Wireless is good at making
big announcements but nothing much has materialized as of yet.

They mainly focus on commercial accounts only and have cellular service as
well. I have been watching US Wireless closely for the last year. I guess if
you have one tower in 18 big cities, you can claim what they claim??

Are they the company that bought Allen M. 's WISP? As I recall he was an
Alvarion shop

As far as I know all their wireless gear was removed from New Orleans about
4 months ago. It cleared up a few channells that were much needed. I was
suprised that they just unplugged everything instead of trying to sell the
clients. My phone was ringing like crazy for a little while.

Hey Joe. Can you give us an update on what is going on down your way?
Are you selling a bunch of connections? What gear are you deploying?
How well is the area recovering? Any information is appreciated.

Cheers,
Scriv
