Same here. Do what you gotta do sometimes. I had one installer aim it

Re: [WISPA] Mounting on silos

2010-07-16 Thread RickG
As far as climbing, most of the silos have a light-weight ladder
compared to water tanks. Also, no high place to tie off at the top.
Same precautions only more so.

Re: [WISPA] Small form factor POE switches

2010-07-16 Thread RickG
Not really a switch but this unit has been through the mill and keeps
on ticking -->
http://www.wlanparts.com/product/POE-18I4S/4-Port-POE-Power-SupplyInserter-18VDC-output.html
They have 24 volt and 802.3AF versions as well.
If it needs to be a switch, I have one of these -->
http://store.wisp-router.com/itemdesc.asp?ic=TP-SW5-NC&eq=&Tp=
but I have not put it into production yet. It does not feel as "heavy
duty" as the Laird unit.

Re: [WISPA] [WISPA Members] TV Whitespaces 802.19.1 coexistance workshop

2010-07-16 Thread Marlon K. Schafer
Spectrum bridge is talking about the Claudville Va. whitespaces test/demo
network
Did about a meg and a half over 3 miles
Showing a propagation map of 200mhz vs. 2400mhz, the coverage is
amazing!
Another test city, Wilmington, NC Did smart city services/data
collection
Someone would have to collect data from someone taking a boat to gather
data from sensors, now it's done via wireless whitespace spectrum
now doing one in Plumas County Ca. Smart grid and broadband for small
rural electric coop
Learned about bandwidth limitations
174mhz to 700mhz is too wide for current radios to cover via one radio,
how that's split up will be interesting to see moving forward
Huge demand in rural broadband market
Out of band emissions requirements are hard to deal with
WiFi vs. White space, WiFi in the home, whitespaces for middle/final
mile
Going to be working on more device to device connectivity

Jim Qualie, PCC communications
Rural communities are demanding bandwidth almost as much as urban
Started in 2004 as a WISP
Making products but I can't tell what
Also sells service?
WISPs can't offer high reliability via 2.4 and 5 gig
In Canada there is a chunk of spectrum (not 3650, sub gig 512 to 698)
that's licensed lite
Strict out of band requirement
75% of Canadians live within 160km of the US boarder
His spectrum has a 121km dead zone at boarder
DTV is hpol
Larger cells require fewer towers but require longer travel times to
those customers

I have to head to the airport. Sorry I can't report on what else is talked
about. The meeting is 30 minutes past closing time 2 speakers left.

laters,

Re: [WISPA] [WISPA Members] TV Whitespaces 802.19.1 coexistance workshop

2010-07-16 Thread Marlon K. Schafer
Gerald Chouinard:
802.22 is an outdoor standard specifically for whitespaces
Range of 10 to 30 km
Set for very long echoes and multipath
23mhz throughput in 6mhz channel out to 10 miles, slower at longer
ranges
Interference range of wifi device (we will have them in whitespaces too)
is larger than the detection range
Must detect on the main operating channel and the backup channel so that
when you move channels you don't move to an in use channel
802.22 cells (ap's) talk to each other so that they all know what
channels are in use near by
If channels are already in use must use TDMA to get around that
Split's a frame. 10ms frames, 16 frames equals a super frame, a super
frame is 160ms
Distance to cpe detected by time between devices
Create spectrum manager, device would know about interference and
collocation issues of multiple ap's
Spectrum management mechanism included

Mark Gibson:
Tools for managing spectrum
Ultimately analysis may be performed in the device
Database will provide data only to the device
iQ link XG, fixed network planning tool
Looks a lot like radio mobile charts
Fancy link budget calculator that also does path profiles etc. Made for
high availability protected microwave systems
Can do space diversity optimization, interference analysis and a TON of
other stuff
It'll automatically create channel plans
iQ clear XG
Next gen spectrum sharing program

Didn't get the name, SSC
Cognitive radio senses, detects and adapts to available spectrum

Ultra-sensitive detector
Programs within the radio to tell the system when, how and where to
switch channels
The devices just take care of their own needs
How it does this is based upon a set of rules, some via the database
others user defined

Mike Merry (sp?), Amerisys
Canadian WISP
Also on the 802.22 working group
Has many ap's on some mountains in confined areas
He does defensive collocation systems
Familiar with self inflicted interference issues
Built upon DNS mechanisms
The software can run in an AP, at the not etc. Called Coexistance
servers
Can handle info about where radios are without releasing that data to a
database manager outside the company
Runs as a service on the internet
Accounts for terrain
Also allows you to count trees in the path
Can run on any linux platform
Is able to emulate a human so can work with any current devices

Dell has a product line below the Equalogic line that does pretty much
anything you can ask for, aside from thin provisioning and native
replication. Check out the MD3000i. There is also the Promise product line
that is priced very competitively. They don't all support multipathing, but
may do the job for CCTV stuff.

Re: [WISPA] [WISPA Members] TV Whitespaces 802.19.1 coexistance workshop

2010-07-16 Thread Marlon K. Schafer
Panel A (second panel, go figure)

Jack Unger, WISPA
Introducing WISPA.
Need interference minimization mechanisms.
Risks of sensing as it's designed.
Channel changes are not easy across broad spectrum distances (60mhz to
600mhz will have greatly different propagation).
Talked about us disliking the Fibertower/sprint ptp spectrum grab.
Suggested mining the Geolocation database.

Joe Hamilla Spectrum Bridge
Looking for ways to build database functionality etc.
Will work with the FCC and manufacturers for certification of devices.
They see new opportunities in the Whitespaces space.
Helping companies be more efficient with licensed or unlicensed
spectrum. They help companies pick what spectrum to use.
Thinks enterprise customers are the biggest market. Especially
utilities in smart-grid upgrades etc. SCADA etc. Also less price
conscience.
Outside of the top 20 cities there is quite a bit of spectrum available
at this time.
Tier 3 will have a lot of spectrum available.
Lot of talk about Cisco, GE etc. Bigger enterprise users. NOT WISP
centric. It's there but in the background.
Also talking about software license keys for the radios.
Benefits and drawbacks of the product. Good penetration, is 6 mbps
enough?
Will this gear follow similar growth paths as WiFi?
Long term possibility of multi-frequency radios. Both Licensed and
unlicensed on the same device.

Jung Yee, WiLAN
Diverse applications.
Environment monitoring
Public safety
"External fiber"
Thinks the most money is for indoor whitespace devices.
Likes the 802.11af standard
Also likes 802.22, more advanced anti interference mechanisms
If you want to sell product you have to sell where the customers are,
that means the big cities.
They want to develop new RF mechanisms, the old protocols should be good
for them.
j...@wilan.com

Ed Melick, Shared Spectrum Technology
Ad for his company, at least he stated it right off the bat!
Cognitive radio and spectrum management experts
They developed sensing mechanisms that allow opportunistic use of open
spectrum across a wide range of spectrum.
Do a lot of software and product development
Working on interference resistance mechanisms

Kiran Challapali, Philips
Applications for whitespaces devices.
Submitted a prototype for testing of whitespaces. One of two original
companies.
They like HD streaming.
20meg HD stream inside 6mhz channel around the home.
Also looking at community internet access mechanisms (specifically
mentions WISPs)
Good for long range high reliability
Not good for high bandwidth or small form factors
The like the personal portable device rules.
High mobility networks, peer to peer etc. mechanisms.
There will probably be multiple standards for Whitespaces (802.22,
802.11af etc.)
Spectrum efficiency is very important
Supports ECMA-392 standard

Several regulatory and industry challenges
Will people look at this as "just another channel"?
It allows for new functionality and shouldn't be just like existing
spectrum
It's important to quickly gain market share with the devices
Networks must be able to coexist
He thinks that the backhaul systems are a good place to start with
coexistence sharing etc.
Devices should not have mandatory coexistence, let the market decide if
that's important and how to do it

Now it's open question time.

Re: [WISPA] [WISPA Members] TV Whitespaces 802.19.1 coexistance workshop

2010-07-16 Thread Marlon K. Schafer
ieee 802 has about 1500 members in 12 different working groups.

Technical issues voted on within the groups need 75% approval to pass.

This is the 802.19 wireless coexistance working group.

Ug, he talks way faster than I can type!

This effort has been in process since March of 2009.

Right about now people are supposed to be submitting ideas for coexistance.

This effort is mainly aimed (only aimed?) at TV Whitespaces.

They hope that this standard creates a mechanism that allows for coexistance
both with other 802 devices but also non-802 devices.

It looks like the idea is for devices to communicate with each other and
share information about how they are programmed and what the environment
looks like.

Outside devices will also communicate with the devices, other devices,
database or us as operators. They will work as a "team" to help maximize
coexistance.

Contact tuncerbay...@nitc.go.jp if you want to be a part of this effort. It
looks like they really want input from the community.

Joe Kwak is next. Consultant for InterDigital Communications.

Coexistance is: It means that more than one network exists in the same time
and place. That can be a good thing (efficient, no interference) or bad
(interference etc.).

Why is it needed? It's needed for consumers, FCC etc. to help allocated
usage. There is a sweet spot for whitespaces in small cities and towns,
some channels available but not a ton so coexistance is most important. In
cities there won't be many available channels, might not be much that can be
done. In very rural areas there are a lot of channels and few users so
there should be plenty of channels available.

Air Traffic control Paradigm: Whitespace spectrum is expected to be
crowded. A "traffic control" type system is needed.

System design: permits discovery, registration and use of the system.
Facilitates communications for collaboration etc.
Collects environmental data.
Shares that information
Identify coexistance problems and provide solutions.

Who would pay for a mechanism like this? Especially if it's done via an
outside database.

A coexistence mechanism would likely have to be voluntary in nature. The
only way to mandate something would be to regulate it. He lists several
examples of why it would be beneficial. Things like data availability about
near by systems that don't have an effect yet but could in the future etc.

LONG example of an air traffic control example of how a central mechanism
would be used to help keep systems from running into each other.

Service examples: Examples of how to combine sensing and data base data
would be more efficient and reliable that either on it's own.

Any advice by the system is only as good as the data it has access to.

The TVWS Database manager may gather info from the field and allow other
users in the field to use that data in coexistance efforts. They will
already know what channels are available etc. He'll have geographic info
available. Add some GIS database's and he can tell us a lot about our
environment.

Could also use DNS servers, AAA servers, google search engines etc. could
also be used. Or put it into the AP's themselves.

Spectrum congestion outside of rural areas is likely and coexistance
mechanisms should help.

Rich Kennedy talking on the actual regulatory rules. (IEEE P802.11af
(wireless lan in TV Whitespaces group))

You'll have to download the ppt's from ieee802.org/19 or wheverever they put
them. Too many numbers with too many FCC parts. 15.247, 15.700 etc.
He's mostly covering FCC part 15.700. That covers the database etc. issues
related to whitespaces.

Rich is saying that many wireless mics are going to become part 15 devices.

Now it's Mark Gibson from Commsearch. He's going to talk about issues
related to the database. His job is business development.

There are 9 different approaches to the database out there at this time.

There are a LOT of people talking to the FCC. 150 exparte's in the last
year, 4 just this week. That's what people file when the physically go to
the FCC to talk to them.

Wireless mics may move from part 15 to something else (possibly lower). The
only ones that have a "license" are part 74 or similar broadcasters.
Basically the broadcasters and cable tv outfits.

There is some push to set some spectrum for broadcast, pulling some license
free spectrum off line, especially in urban areas.

He's got a cool map that shows how much spectrum is expected to be available
in areas around the country.

The devices may be able to handle coexistance decisions it's self. They
(commsearch) thinks that the device will be the smart part, the database
administrator will just be the database manager.

Security should be a shared secret or something similar. Anything more
complicated will add a lot of cost.

Database managers may help with channel optimization, frequency planning,
other bands etc.

Repurposing of the

2010-07-16 Thread Marlon K. Schafer
Oh yeah. They can cause a LOT of speed issues. Sometimes they'll cut
signal too. I try to stay as far away from them as I can.

It's not as big of a problem with low customer density per ap or low noise
levels. Today it matters. Sometimes a lot, sometimes a little, usually
it's noticeable though.

I've played with NexentaStor with good results.

NexentaStor integrated with hardware: http://www.pogolinux.com/nexenta/

Note that I haven't tried either of these in a CCTV application, just
normal ISP data storage.

Re: [WISPA] Mounting on silos

2010-07-16 Thread Marlon K. Schafer
Re: [WISPA] Mounting on silosOne way to handle that (I often do this because
I'm very afraid of heights) is to mount the antennas at the top then run good
cable down to a nice play for the radios.

LMR 600 only looses 3 or 4 dB per hundred feet. For runs of less than 50ish
feet I'll usually just use LMR 400. If 3 dB of cable loss kills your system
you'll be fighting it every time something changes (heavy rain, fog etc.)
anyway. Yeah I know weather isn't supposed to affect these bands but someone
forgot to tell the radios that :-).

Most silos like scott is dealing with have no ladder going to the very
top. Imagine a domed water tower with no ladder to the top of the dome. They
never were designed to have to climb to the top. No reason to. So what you
are left with is a ladder that goes to where the dome starts. You then have
another 10 feet or more to be able to get over the top of the dome. In
otherwords, you can't mount at the top of the dome. You have to come up with a
solution to get you over the dome.

Sure, you could bring in a lift or crane and mount stuff. However,
maintenance and repair become the issue. You have to bring that lift in each
time because you can't climb to the top of the dome.

Re: [WISPA] Mounting on silos

2010-07-16 Thread Justin Wilson
Most silos like scott is dealing with have no ladder going to the very
top. Imagine a domed water tower with no ladder to the top of the dome. They
never were designed to have to climb to the top. No reason to. So what you
are left with is a ladder that goes to where the dome starts. You then have
another 10 feet or more to be able to get over the top of the dome. In
otherwords, you can¹t mount at the top of the dome. You have to come up
with a solution to get you over the dome.

Sure, you could bring in a lift or crane and mount stuff. However,
maintenance and repair become the issue. You have to bring that lift in
each time because you can¹t climb to the top of the dome.

This year the trees seem to be growing a lot more leaves than in the
past. I have a couple of silos that I need to get the backhaul higher
than the 10' mast will allow. If I can get above the dome, I could also
increase the covereage area.
So, the question is, for those of you using silos, how to you get above
the dome?

Re: [WISPA] Mounting on silos

2010-07-16 Thread Bill Gaylord
We do the same thing, but we use the full 21' galvanized pipes from the
hardware store. I secure them with hose 2 hose clamps around at least 4
of the steel rings. I did not want to screw into the concrete, as I was
concerned with the screws being able to come loose. With hose clamps
around the steel rings, nothing can wiggle loose. We have been doing
this for 5 years now and have yet to have a single hose clamp break.
Hose clamps are also stainless steel, so rusting is not an issue.

16' Schedule 40 Pipe. I have 4 silos like this. Attach pipe with L
brackets (Old ARC Antenna mounts) to the silo with RedHeads (concrete
anchors) into the concrete. Push up pole, with usually about 6'
remaining (attached) on the silo and 8-10' sticking above the cap. I
get the pipe from a local fencing and hardware company. They have it in
20' sections usually.

Used to us 30' push up poles, but they bend too easily.

I have a couple of POPs that are silos. Several of them are old
concrete silos with metal domes. The top of the dome is more than 10'
above the top of the concrete. I have been mounting with 10' pipe on
the ladder side and not servicing customers on the "back" side. It has
