It looks like I'm about 75ms rtt away from you and at ~1mbps... not
bad for a jaunt through WCG's network which adds about 70ms to the
trip. My local outgoing connection was 100mbps to AS4323.

[WISPA] [Fwd: Press Release: Members of CBC Join Congresswoman Watson in Outlin ing Goals to Narrow Digital Divide in Upcoming DTV Legislation]

2005-10-27 Thread John Scrivner
It looks like the story is getting out there. Please read the statement
below from Congresswoman Watson. She was one who was in attendance and
spoke briefly at the Digital Divide Broadcast to Broadband event in D.C.
that was setup by New America. I am very happy to have been included in
this chance to help lobby for unlicensed use of television channels. My
thanks to all in this effort regardless of the outcome going forward. We
have done our job at getting the word out to Congress. Thanks to all of
you. What else can we do now to keep the momentum going our way?

Immediate
Release

October 27,
2005

*Members of Congressional Black Caucus Join Representative Watson in*

*Outlining Goals to Narrow Digital Divide in Upcoming DTV Legislation *

* *

Washington, D.C. Fifteen members of the Congressional Black Caucus
joined Congresswoman Diane E. Watson (CA-33rd) in signing a letter
addressed to the Chair and Ranking Member of the House Energy and
Commerce Committee. The letter calls on the Committee to address the
issue of universal access to digital television (DTV) and the equitable
allocation of spectrum when it considers the upcoming DTV bill.

"I and my colleagues from the Congressional Black Caucus recognize the
fact that Congress must take advantage of the transition from analog to
DTV to narrow our nation's growing digital divide between the "haves"
and "have-nots,"" said Congresswoman Watson. AThe recent devastation
along the Gulf Coast dramatically reminds us of the need for a robust
telecommunications infrastructure that benefits everyone, regardless of
race, income, or geographic location. The upcoming transition to DTV
has the potential to greatly advance universal access to competitive,
innovative, and affordable broadband services. Congress must seize this
opportunity by establishing safeguards to ensure that the transition
benefits all consumers," stated Watson.

The letter outlines three initiatives that Congress should include in
the new DTV bill: 1) a government compensation program for set-top boxes
that owners of analog television sets will have to purchase in order to
process a digital signal; 2) a set-aside of reclaimed analog spectrum
for unlicensed uses to facilitate the deployment of community internet;
and 3) a portion of spectrum reserved for bidding by small market
players and new entrants, specifically minorities and women, and
additional support for programs that would provide necessary access to
capital to allow minorities and women to make use of the set-aside
spectrum.

The Text of the Letter is Attached Below:

The Honorable Joe Barton

Chairman

House Energy and Commerce Committee

2125 Rayburn House Office Building

Washington, DC 20515

The Honorable John Dingell

Ranking Member

House Energy and Commerce Committee

2125 Rayburn House Office Building

Washington, DC 20515

Dear Chairman Barton and Ranking Member Dingell:

It is with a vision of a transition to digital television (DTV) that
benefits all Americans, that we, the members of the Congressional Black
Caucus, write this letter. Specifically, in light of the recent
devastations along the Gulf Coast due to Hurricane Katrina and Rita that
starkly illustrated the divide between our nation's "haves" and
"have-nots," we urge you to harness the potential of the DTV transition
to open the door to a richer, broader and more inclusive variety of
telecommunications services, accessible to all Americans.

Though we've taken widespread access to communications services for
granted in the past, the abruptness with which Katrina and Rita left
thousands without the means to communicate with loved ones or access
public safety information has shown us that a robust and accessible
information infrastructure is not only vital to the educational and
economic life of our nation, it is an essential element of emergency
preparedness.

Universal access to broadband could be a critical first step in ensuring
that the benefits of competitive, innovative and affordable
telecommunications services (such as Voice over Internet Protocol and
broadband video services) are available to everyone, without regard to
race, income or geographic location. Such services will allow more
consumers to interact with members of their communities at home and
overseas, to speak and debate about issues important to sustaining o

It's not a matter of cost effectiveness. The ILEC I am partnered
with owns a LARGE area in southern Missouri. The equipment that is
available is not, yet working well. I am testing the WaveIP product
right now. I do not like the way they implemented the system, and
the available throughput is just too low. The WaveIp and Airspan
products (both) are based on the WiMax chips, so when that becomes
available, they will be able to run the WiMax protocols. Perhaps
others would like the implementation, but they have shown me NOTHING
that is impressive so far. I WILL say that I have been able to make
a link, standing on the ground holding the antenna at 20.75 miles
and pulled the same throughput I did standing under the tower. The
NLOS properties of this band (lower 700MHz) is very impressive, but
the product just plain sucks.

>They still don't get it (lets hope none of them ever hires people
>like you and me. THAT's my biggest fear). They'll want gear

Wellthey hired me. Does that count?

2005-10-27 Thread John Scrivner
This is fantastic news, Frannie. I have to be honest. I was skeptical
things would progress this far. I owe you a nice dinner the next time I
am in D.C. regardless of the outcome going forward. You did us proud
Frannie. I am copying the WISPA list here so they know their efforts are
being recognized directly at the House level in D.C. Hopefully this will
lead to actual legislative action to task the FCC to do the right thing.

Thank you so much,
Scriv

PS. Anyone, please feel free to pass this message along to other WISP lists.

Hey John,

Good news!! An amendment calling on the FCC to finish the White
Spaces proceeding passed in the House Energy and Commerce Committee as
part of their Digital Transition bill. Now we have to see what
happens on the floor and see what we can get in the Senate, but right
now this is a terrific first step!
BTW, all of the members of that House Committee received that letter
signed by all the WISPs yesterday!

Here's to progress...

Best,

Frannie

Me too, but aside from giving up market pace we can still do a pretty
good job gaining customers.

I am competing in a Qwest DSL market and Charter Broadband, and we are
continously turning on new subs, ever day.

Some come from those guys, and they are the sweetest of all.

Service is #1 after a person gets on to broadband.

Service is our edge.

Funny thing.
I don't advertise any more either.
I get all my customers from referrals.
Some that we pay comish on and others not.
I have saved tens of thousands by getting rid of the expensive ads.

DoD Buying Sprint's iDEN Network
Rumored deal could be huge for cable industry

Posted 2005-10-27 13:10:42
User Comcast_Loke
sends in this PCS
Intel Blog story that indicates the Department of Defense will be
buying Sprint's iDEN network as "the first phase of a national
overhaul of its security framework in regards to communication."
The gist is that the government will move much of its wireless
communications onto one encrypted wireless network, and Sprint/Nextel
customers will be issued dual-network CDMA/iDEN handsets, so that as
iDEN becomes restricted, CDMA will take its place.

The report also claims that in exchange, Sprint will get plenty of
spectrum in the 700 & 800Mhz bands for mobile Wimax broadband
service. Keep in mind that if true, most of this wouldn't happen until
around 2010, which roughly gels with Wimax analyst timeline predictions.
The report claims the deal won't even be announced until 2007 or 2008.

This move makes this week's news
of a Sprint co-branding wireless deal with Comcast, Time Warner Cable,
and Cox slightly more interesting. The deal would give Sprint priority
access to Wimax spectrum, letting those three cable giants offer
re-branded Wimax to better compete with baby Bell Wimax offerings.

This whole scenario assumes a lot; at the forefront that mobile
Wimax is a solid business model. If Wimax tanks however, the report
seems to indicate that Sprint's deal with Uncle Sam allows them to
instead grab ample 2.5 GHz spectrum, and deploy the most popular
technology at the time (like WiBro).

Either way, the cable industry would be well positioned for wireless
broadband competition.

All prices from wisp-router.com. You may find better prices elsewhere,
but Eje's usually seem to be in line.

2611 CB3 Deluxe = $94.83 (qty 24)
PacWireless Rootenna = RT24-14 = $36.90 (qty 25) UML (Satellite Arm) =
$13.45

A 3 inch piece of Velcro tape holds in in just fine.

They seem to handle 100 degree + days in South Texas without any
problem. I don't think I have had any fail due to heat or cold. It got
down to the teens last winter.

Well I would say that Teletronics EZ Bridges were good. I have 500

And they have a 200MW version.
But lately, I've been getting some bad ones in my orders.

The 100mw pcb kit is 100.00 or so and the 200mw is 125.00 or so.

But I would caution buyer beware, since buying the pcb only
version and not the full fledges outdoor unit, I've noticed a lot
of doa''s and unstable units.

Will be nice when StarVX Lonnie gets his single radio cpe.
I understand it may be in the price range you mentioned.
