[WISPA] Cooperative import buying.

2006-10-24 Thread Mark Koskenmaki
More and more, I have contacts with salemen who want to directly sell me
commonly used stuff out of Asia.Pigtails, CM9's, power injectors.
SBC's, etc. Often these items are a pain for distributors to sell, and
as a result they often mark things like injectors and pigtails up quite a
bit.

Some things are just too knew to be commonly, if at all, stocked here in
the US.

I'm interested in starting a cooperative effort to buy specific, smallish
items out of Singapore, Taiwan, China...

Warranty on a CM9? Who here has EVER considered warranty on a CM9? Or a
$3 POE injector? Or a $3.25 pigtail?

I know I just pitch things like that, if they don't work or fail.

If you have any interest, email me OFF LIST please. I'm sure that between
us, we have a lot of contacts for a lot of stuff we use routinely, but
either don't wish to buy in the 100's at a time to get a discount, or maybe
you're like me and never have the funding for large purchases, and the small
quantity buys are killer expensive.

Note to WISPA: I am not attempting to make anything on this, and it is not
any attempt to sell or otherwise promote a business venture, simply an
organizational effort to benefit WISPA list members.

Thanks

[WISPA] High latency - public IP's

2006-10-24 Thread Ed Spoon

Experiencing very high ping times (2000-3000ms) on the public IP's of
our Alvarion equipment. The public's are assigned to routers and PC's.
The radios have private IP's and do not experience any lag, even when
the public is terrible. The Alvarion's are in the same subnet as Trango
subscribers but we don't see it on the Trango public devices. Alvarion
and Trango AP's are on the same tower. The latency lasts 30-60 seconds
and then goes back to normal (<20ms). It repeats again every 5 - 10
minutes (no exact pattern). It does bounce from AP to AP, when one AP is
lagged, the others are not. Firmware is up to date.

Seems like routing, but why only the one brand and not the Trango
clients?

Of course all of this is fed from our Mikrotik router.

Thanks

[WISPA] Erate

2006-10-24 Thread chris cooper

Has anyone had experience bundling IP and landline transport
on Erate bids?  The rules seem to indicate that only Telecom providers as
defined in the rules  may supply transport.  However, the WAN fact
sheet provides that “wide area network service can be eligible for
discount as Internet access, if leasing of the wide area network is the most
cost-effective means of obtaining Internet access” as long as access is
limited to basic conduit access. It further states that connections between
sites leased from a non-telecom carrier are fundable if the method is most
cost-effective.

The SLD defines a WAN as “provides connections from
one or more computers or networks within an eligible school or library to one
or more computer or networks that are external to such eligible school or
library”

I would make the argument that leased line connections
between my network and an eligible facility constitutes a WAN under the above
description and therefore they can lease the whole package from me.

Trying to understand their rules is akin to wading through
molasses.

Chris
