This has been an interesting thread to follow, thanks for posting it.
APs are named with [Building]-[floor]-[room]-[jack/cable#]. For
example, Beardlsy-1st-Room117-jack7-250-1. Building/floor/room help
track down the AP in the feild and the jack is very helpful tracking
down its connection in
We use - (eg 100-170)
or - -
for rooms that have more than one AP in them (eg 166-144-1).
We got away from using building names many years ago because they keep
renaming that damned buildings every time a new donor wanted his name
associated with a building ( or an old donor went bankrupt

We dont actually have room numbers in our names because theres often
renovation work which might change the numerotation of the rooms.
We use the id of the building, closet number+ Letter for purpose +
sequential number.

We do the following. Subnet = 3rd octect of ip
IP= 4th octect of IP
all gear is in the cc.buffalo.edu domain.
ex. AP 10.3.80.1 = wls-capen80-1.cc.buffalo.edu
Terminal Server tsx-(building)(subnet)-(IP#).cc.buffalo.edu

We use the following naming convention for our 6000 APs, which helps us
identify quickly where it is and what switch it is connected to:
bldg#-networkcloset#-AP(closest room #)
For example, the AP in my office is named 224-3b-ap4439 and the switch that
handles that ap is called
