Wouldn't it be easier (and beneficial) to get faculty to utilize
technology in their classes rather than vilifying it ... or this
too much to ask ... this device is the real connection to the
student

Not to get too off-topic, but where are the requests coming from, and why?

Why are you singling out iPhones?
This sounds like yet another case of technology being asked to provide a
solution to a social or political problem. And that
There is a great solution, but my Apple shares would suffer from it...
Would you like to block Pocket PC and Symbian?,

I'm going to have to go with Jethro on this one. When I was in class
generally you were warned at the beginning of the semester. Following
that, a call during usually resulted in either being asked to leave or
being humiliated by the professor, or both. Also Neil brings up another
point in a
One microwave oven in each corner of the room, with the doors broken
off, running 24/7.
More seriously, I think the effort is pretty futile. People could just
use 3G/EDGE or bring in a Palm Pre/Blackberry/whatever instead.

Blocking technology usually just creates more problems than it solves.
Imagine an emergency on campus and the fallout from students being
unable to use their cell phones. This is a job for administrators to
do what they do best.
