RE: [WIRELESS-LAN] Nyansa vs 7Signal vs ?

2017-07-27 Thread Jason Cook
Hi All,

Thanks for the great responses as per normal, always good feedback. Couple more
products to add to the list to look at too.

HI Caston,

Thanks for the detailed response, that's excellent. You've pretty much nailed
it on the fighting for the same budget despite being more complementary than
competitive. Ultimately we'll only be able to choose one product. It'll come
down to cost and which one we feel will tick the most boxes.

Regards

Jason

Subject: Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] Nyansa vs 7Signal vs ?

Hi Jason,
Full disclosure: My company was one of the first resellers of 7Signal. We are
also an early reseller of Nyansa. I have taken every precaution to make this
informative with an iota of "vendor speak". (If I've failed in any way, my
apologies in advance and I will ban myself from ever posting again!) :)

I know three organizations that are customers of 7Signal that have also
deployed or PoC'd Nyansa. Two are higher ed and one is not. (I am not at
liberty to disclose the organizations, but can discuss offline.)

7Signal and Nyansa address two different use cases. There is some overlap in
the business case that they make. I have no doubt that they will compete for
the same budget allocations, even though they complement each other technically.

Business Case...

  * Both aim to improve Wi-Fi performance. (Nyansa also addresses
wired/uplink network performance as well. It examines switch/router/other
components.)
  * Both can breakdown network performance to specific protocols/applications.

Use case...

  * Both aim to improve network performance from the perspective of the user
experience - but in two *completely* different ways. 7Signal does this with
sensors - both highly capable (e.g. expensive) physical sensors that are
deployed as an overlay to the Wi-Fi network, as well as "mobile sensors" and
win/mac/ios/android agents. Those sensors can actively simulate ftp, smtp, and
other common protocols. ("Simulate" is probably not the best word, but I can't
find a better one at the moment.)
  * 7Signal provides a historical view into network performance with an
emphasis on the contribution that RF quality has on the environment. It is a
more proactive way to monitor & report on RF than a spectrum analyzer, but it
does not completely replace the need for spectrum analyzers. The
reports/displays from 7Signal are very powerful in the hands of an experienced
Wi-Fi technical expert.
  * Nyansa has no way to address specific spectrum problems, but it can
recognize characteristics that certain RF problems create. (In one case I
experienced, it did a really good job of diagnosing far-end interference from
the controller logs.) The KPI's that Nyansa displays/reports can be shown to a
technical CIO/CTO who will be able to comprehend the information.

Technical differences:

  * 7Signal has sensors that are deployed to monitor network traffic and RF
spectrum. Nyansa extrapolates network performance based on advanced analytics
by examining controller/AP/switch/router data, as well as network traffic via a
TAP/SPAN/aggregation port. Nyansa does not examine RF spectrum, but does a
good job of making recommendations at the root cause that may be creating the
problem. At that point, 7Signal or a spectrum analyzer is useful (and
sometimes absolutely necessary) to determine the contribution that spectrum
issues may be creating.
  * 7Signal supports a number of Wi-Fi vendors. As of this writing, Nyansa
supports Cisco & Aruba. (I am told that Ruckus is also supported, but I don't
have personal experience.)
  * The 7Signal mobile product has some really good functionality. It was a
really nice addition to their product set. Obviously, it can't do all that the
full-blown sensor does.
  * Nyansa can be turned loose on the helpdesk. It has "common language"
recommendations to address "root cause" of a user's giving problem. That helps
avoid escalations to the network team. The alerts that Nyansa generates are
"really actionable" according to one end-user who has used both 7Signal &
Nyansa.
  * Additional note and really cool concept: Nyansa creates a baseline of
"normal" network performance (as measured by the KPI's, from the perspective of
both technical and user experience). It then monitors and alerts for
deviations against "normal". It also shows those segments that are best/worst
performers. From that performance comparison, the network team can determine
the characteristics/settings on the controller/network/switch/segm

I'm a fan of Netinsight (aka Rasa) from Aruba. We get some very useful and

official launch.

Recommend looking at them.

Hi All,

There’s been plenty of positives mentioned about Nyansa in recent discussions.
I’m wondering if anyone out there has experience at both 7signal and Nyansa or
any other systems that do wireless monitoring/alerting in a more detailed way
than vendor provided gear. The approach for these 2 are obviously quite
different with I guess varying advantages. Don’t need much detail, just general
thoughts is good.

IMO nothing beats 7signal in the radio / spectrum part of their *Wi-Fi*

The Gigamon G-TAP TAP-251 is an OM3 multimode passive tap that works
extremely well, and is quite inexpensive and low profile. There are other
models for different grades of fiber including OS1/OS2 single mode. You'll
likely also want the tap chassis which is a 0.5U rackmount that can fit 4
of those tap modules.

Sorry folks, but yesterday go away from me. Against all odds, I got a girl to
marry me, so I have to do something on Valentine's day to keep her around.

I don't think there are a lot of days left to do this in the near future. The
remainder of this week will be short notice, and a lot of you will be traveling
for WLPC staring next Wednesday, so I'm only offering times for next Monday and
Tuesday. Please respond to the doodle poll at the link below by the end of the
day tomorrow, 2/16. The most widely accepted time slot will win. The bridge
details appear on the poll page, but I'll also send them to the list along with
the winning time slot. The call will be recorded, so anybody who can't make it
live can listen to it later.

Thanks,

I’d be willing to provide our experience if requested. We’ve had Voyance in
production since around September.

Overall the product democratizes wireless troubleshooting from my engineers to
the service desk or departmental distributed IT, making them more capable of
resolving issues on a first pass instead of constantly escalating
client-related problems. The direct cost savings in allowing the service desk
to resolve the most reported incidents instead of requiring my team to resolve
them made up approximately 15% of the total cost of the product at our tier at
100 cases per year for each type of case, but that didn’t factor in that we’d
also be saving time (and cost) in getting our other committed projects out of
the door quicker leaving more time for professional development.

At our current tier, the product is worth what was paid. Being able to show our
CIO team/leadership team that the changes that we’ve made are beneficial and
seeing where we stand against other similarly sized institutions has provided
some direction on where we want to make future improvements. Being able to
decrease mean time to resolution and increase first pass resolution times for
more complicated client-issues has had a positive effect on the trust
relationship between our faculty/students and central IT, but we’ve also
invested significantly in our infrastructure within the last year so it’s murky
on how much reduction in resolution times has benefited us versus our
infrastructure investment.

We use Prime Infrastructure for wireless management/configuration, AP placement
mapping and MDF/IDF identification. Our reliance on Splunk for log correlation
with reported issues has dropped significantly.

If you have anything specific you’d like to know, please feel free to reach out
to me off list.

All,

We did a extensive evaluation of Nyansa. We just got done purchasing it. I
think it it the best wireless performance management software I have seen. It

I would be very happy to be on the call or speak to anyone individually.

Looking to talk with other schools that have objectively evaluated Nyansa
with an installed appliance. Curious how what criteria you used to decide
whether it was bringing you value, and if you bit on it, did it continue
to bring value after the purchase.

I have it in test and am aware of the feature set and what it promises to
do, but am looking for testimonials on what it has really exposed that you
could take action on, how it fits with other tools that you have, and
whether you have found it to be worth the cost.

On or off list is fine.

Thanks!

Thanks!

RE: [WIRELESS-LAN] Nyansa Voyance - thoughts?

2016-06-01 Thread Norton, Thomas (IT Operations Admin)
Hey Jeff,

Nyansa addressed security and privacy satisfactorily for us from the
discussions and documentation provided. Being a POC it met the basic criteri,a
Moving forward we will be vetting it further as we aim to complete a full
deployment, we will want to validate we are still in compliance. With that
said I have listed some key bullet points below based on our discussions with
them.

Some of the key highlights around security:

  * Voyance doesn't send any packets to the cloud - They also document and
share with customers, what exact metrics are sent to the cloud
  * Data sent to the cloud is encrypted end to end over TLS
  * Daily penetration testing by a third party - it's not the free service :)
  * The company has strict and documented controls on who can access the data
– From what we have seen and were told they employ digital certificates, two
factor auth, have audit trails etc.
  * The solution is hosted within AWS virtual private cloud (VPC)
  * On the application security front they perform tests around things like
SQL injection, cross-site scripting etc.
Here's a few bullets on privacy:

  * All the raw data Nyansa collects and analyze belongs to our customers
  * The company doesn't track or store access to non-business critical
applications.
  * If you discontinue use of the Voyance service; all data will be deleted
after 30 days - you can also request to have this done sooner.

I would have expected the cost to be a stopping point for management here as
well.

When management saw the benefits Voyance can provide, we now have plans to
deploy on all our wireless network instead of the limited PoC we have now.

Thank you for bringing this into the discussion. The cost turned us away from

I hope they review the pricing model. I too am interested in any information

We also have an 'early adoption' installation at USF. We've found the client
performance data the system provides and the alerts it generates to be helpful
and accurate. For example, we had a fairly large dDoS attack hit our network a
couple months ago and the Nyansa system clearly spotted the impact this had on
client experience. The baseline comparisons are useful in identifying areas
needing the most attention and the product's ability to monitor and report on
critical services like DHCP, DNS and RADIUS helps identify issues which may be
affecting large numbers of clients. The Nyansa team has been very responsive
and receptive to suggestions for product improvements.

I looked at the demo, and while intriguing, at $30 per AP I’d have a hard time

2016-05-25 Thread Turner, Ryan H
So, I did talk with the company more in depth today about their pricing. The
initial numbers I quoted were on the high side. Looks as though an environment
with 2500 APs is in the 50k a year range. Apparently the costs do not scale
linearly with additional APs. You also get price breaks for multi-year
subscriptions (doesn't work for us since we can only go year to year, but for
some of you folks it will). In short, we aren't ruling them out on cost at
this point as they look to be capable of making some accommodations for higher
ed. We'll submit our feedback to the group if we decide to go to a POC.

We have a few concerns... High cost and the cloud based nature of the service

Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] Nyansa Voyance - thoughts?

2016-05-25 Thread Jeffrey D. Sessler
Cloud services are becoming the norm, but it’s been a rare occurrence for me to
find startups that are doing security well – or that can even articulate what
they are doing. Time and time again, the vendor’s security section is a
cut/paste of AWS with little information on their internal application
controls. I remember one vendor recently, when I asked about their internal
controls around access to the student data we may share with them, came back
with something to the effect, “We only have a few developers, and they are the
only ones that have access to your data. They are good people.” – Ah, yeah,
that’s not the answer I wanted to hear!

Also, when I’ve pressed some of these little startups about their claim of
“third party pen/vuln testing” – I often get back that they use the freemium
Qualys offerings. It’s better than nothing, but not what most would consider
comprehensive, but they get the check-box to put on their site.

This is one of our concerns that we hope to clear up next week when we dive
deeper. I know this doesn’t address all the concerns, but I ‘suspect’ that
payload information doesn’t go to the cloud. Of course, you don’t need a
payload to see that someone is going to an adult content site. With that said,
cloud bases services is now becoming the norm. Most vendors are now aiming
their products to the cloud, and having advanced service on prem will likely be
less and less common.

I’m curious about the privacy implications of the product.

For those campuses with this in-play, did you need to alter your appropriate
use/data collection policies and/or notify your user base that this level of
collection, and subsequent correlation, was going to take place? This seems
similar to the dust up in the UC system when they implemented Fidelis and the
faculty raised issues with it.

Also, how anonymized is the data by the time it gets to Nyansa? What are the
risks/rewards of handing potentially sensitive data over to a rather young
company with no established track record of protecting that data?

RE: [WIRELESS-LAN] Nyansa Voyance - thoughts?

2016-05-25 Thread Norman Mourtada
At Suffolk University we started working with Nyansa Voyance since March of
2015. We worked very closely with their engineering team with different
wireless scenario with data being collected from 6 of our Aruba wireless
controllers (M3s and 7220s). We have similar experience as Mike and other early
adopters.

We like the baseline comparison with other similar companies it provides so you
can see how good your network is performing and adjustments you might need to
make in those areas.
This helped us identify client radius performance issues and were able to
resolve it.

We like how you can create custom filters for a specific AP, AP group etc so
you can pin point or collect data in problem areas so you can analyze reported
issues. We also like the feature that it automatically adds a comment and
timestamp when critical config changes are made. This allows us to go back and
compare the baseline stats to see the impact the changes made.

The Nyansa team is very responsive. We like the feature within the product that
you can ask a question, take a snapshot and submit directly to support.

Ryan,

It's been pretty good at least in getting you to the right area (wifi vs
dns/dhcp/radius) and also calling out things within wifi (weak signal, client
hopping SSID, SNR issues) and it seems to be getting better and better as time
goes on. One of the things I really like is that new features/intelligence
just start showing up without having to download code, etc. They just update
things in the cloud and you have immediate access.

As to client troubleshooting, I've been trying to use Voyance as the first
tool. I may then go into a vendor-specific tool to really get specific but by
the time I do that, Voyance has told me at what I should be taking a closer
look. It doesn't try to narrow it down to one root cause, but rather
recommends one or more things that you should investigate based upon the
symptoms it detected. I don't know that I can put a percentage on it, but it
has been pretty accurate in the recommendations.

As to changes, we're an Aruba wireless shop. Multiple controllers but different
IP spaces so as users moved around campus and jump from one controller to
another, they see L2 re-transmits, ARP failures, etc. as their IP address goes
out of service. This was pretty clear to see with the "timeline" feature that
actually lets you watch step by step a client's connection history, not only
to an given AP or controller, but what vlan/ip space, ssid, etc, We're
planning to change the controller config so that all controllers have the same
vlans/ip spaces, in the same order and then turn up hash-based vlan selection
so that once your device gets an IP to start the day, you keep that same IP as
you hop controller to controller and we hope that will smooth the transitions
and cut back on the L2 re-transmits, ARP misses, etc.

Voyance also reported a fair amount of SSID hopping issues we didn't know were
going on. Using that timeline feature, I figured out it was related to turning
up password change enforcement. We have Eduroam as our primary 802.1x SSID and
brandeis_open for things that can't do 802.1x. Once a device connects to
802.1x, we tag its entry in the endpoint database as being 802.1x capable. The
brandeis_open SSID checks for that tag and if it exists, tells you to go back
to Eduroam, waits a short time and drops your connection. People were changing
their passwords via our portal but their old cached passwords were still on
their Eduroam config on things like smart phones, etc. That connection would
fail, their device would then hop to brandeis_open, which would see them as
802.1x capable and tell them to go away and the device would try Eduroam again.
Back and forth between the two SSID's, over and over. The timeline showed the
SSID hop but we could also see the radius login failure due to rejected
credentials in between. Light bulb moment!. We'll be adding text to our
password change portal to remind people to forget and reconnect to Eduroam on
all their devices after a password change. Being able to more easily see these
types of things makes Voyance a winner for me, as those more global things are
generally hardest to see, especially in the case of things are not hard
failures.

Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] Nyansa Voyance - thoughts?

2016-05-25 Thread Whelan, Robert
Greetings,

Northeastern has been participating in an early adoption program with Nyansa
for a subset of our wireless network service. We had been searching for a way
to understand the service experiences through client devices (vs. our network
monitoring). Often times, we’d hear “wireless is slow” or “wireless is down”,
when our systems were clearly functional.

We enabled the appliance and let it collect information from mirror ports.
Since the data is maintained in the cloud the information being sent/retained
must be focused and able to parse. Review of the collected information
provided specific usage details from wireless clients informing us what needed
to be assessed and what they were experiencing. The value of this information
is extensive as our engineering and tuning efforts are better informed. To our
service and support teams, the portal provides immediate access to the data for
troubleshooting and providing historical data (retained for up to 6 months)

The Nyansa team is very responsive and continues to consider service
enhancements, even at this early stage of their product. We have used this
usage data with our vendor (Aruba) and also with mobile client device operating
systems – both to assist in troubleshooting and OS improvements.

So far so good.

Watch out for this issue which we hit due to Aruba's lack of the
ability to send a gratuitous ARP or similar packet on behalf of a
client that has roamed from an AP on one controller to an AP on
another controller:

http://community.arubanetworks.com/t5/Wireless-Access/Expected-behavior-when-client-roams-across-controllers/td-p/259215

We are still working with Aruba on this, but it may turn into a
request for Aruba to implement such a feature as it already exists on
Juniper/Trapeze (and probably Cisco, though I have no direct
experience there):

Sounds like a reason to switch to EAP-TLS!

Ryan,

As you noted, Brandeis is an early adopter. We've been involved since last
summer. We were impressed with the amount of data Voyance tracks and reports,
as well as the Nyansa engineering team's willingness to incorporate our input
into the product.

We have their monitor (AKA the Crawler) on mirror ports from all of our
wireless controller up-links so it sees all the client traffic to/from wireless
clients and everything they talk to. When things go amiss, Voyance alerts and
lets you drill down to identify underlying cause. Those alerts are based on
variations from what is considered "normal" for our environment, based on
Voyance's data collection over time. We can tune those thresholds and triggers
as needed to help avoid false alerts.

In one place, we can not only see the client wireless experience, but also
their experience with interactions the client and DHCP, DNS, RADIUS and web
traffic.

When we're not getting active alerts, their reporting tools are great for
looking at trends, comparisons and even drilling down from a different angle.
We can compare AP-group-to-AP-group, building-to-building, as well as how
Brandeis compares (anonymously) to other Voyance customer network sites to get
a feel for how we're doing compared to other schools and/or businesses with
similar sized networks.

We're already talking about some infrastructure changes in response to some
unexpected behaviors we were able to detect with Voyance.

How accurate has the fault analysis been with the product? I have seen a lot

found you can go to this tool, after a user complains about a problem, and
actually determine what the cause was? What percentage of the time is that
successful? Can you share what you intend on changing as a result of the tool?

Re: [WIRELESS-LAN] Nyansa Voyance - thoughts?

2016-05-24 Thread Rowell Dionicio
While I haven’t yet used the product personally I have seen the demos. In
addition to the SPAN or Tap, they gather information from the controllers as
well. With Aruba (I believe it is Aruba) they utilize APIs. On Cisco, they
gather information from the WLCs using SNMP.

We are looking to do a POC. What we’re expecting to get out of Nyansa is the
ability to help our staff in troubleshooting wireless issues rather than
escalating them to the top. The amount of information Nyansa provided in
troubleshooting was impressive to me. An example would be determining whether
an application issue is wireless or non-wireless related.

Also, being able to gather metrics on all aspects of wireless is what I am most
interested in. For things such as areas encountering high retries, whether
changing transmit power create a positive or negative change, whether the new
access point or antenna installed made an improvement, and whether RRM is
helping, etc. There is capability for Nyansa to automatically tag in their
system when a change was made to make it easy to determine what kind of effect
the change made to the network.

We have reservations with storing data in the cloud but I would rather have
someone manage that infrastructure to deal with the information gathering,
metric calculation etc. This is just a reflection of having to handle Cisco
Prime on-prem.

We are in the process of doing a POC so I will have a better understanding in
the near future.
