Re: [WISPA] StarOS Backhaul wont connect??? UPDATE

2009-10-06 Thread RickG
As a followup, I went out to the towers in question and tried the link
again utilizing all the suggestions. Unfortunately, it still will not
connect to a better AP. When weather permits, I'll probably climb the
tower and replace the boards. Any other ideas?

You're good! Your comments got me investigating further. The AP

go out to the remote to try it but I have a good feeling it will work.
 Will advise. -RickG

Both ends being the same is not the issue.  It is the Atheros driver.
With that standard driver, the AP may be able to tune to a channel that
is not available as a standard scan channel on which to locate an AP.
For example, with most of the Atheros cards, you can set up an AP on:
5180, 5185, 5200, etc.  However, the standard Atheros driver will not be
able to locate an AP that is running at 5185 because that is not a
standard channel.  A client CAN be configured to connect at that
channel, but you would have to supply the driver with a list of channels
to scan for the AP.  I'm not familiar enough with StarOS to know if
that is an option OR if StarOS is even using the standard driver.  If
so, it is something to consider.

Your 4th idea of swapping is a good idea. I have other customers

This is, I think, the best option.  It is likely to be the most
 definitive test.

Butch,

Very good ideas but...
1) Security (encryption is off).
2) I've tried several freqs. Either way, both ends are the same
equipment so there shoudl not be a problem. I am familiar with
Mikrotik and there is no scan list in StarOS that I am aware of.
3) No mac filtering. Unit is wide open.

Your 4th idea of swapping is a good idea. I have other customers

Does StarOS have a scan feature?  If it can see the AP, but not
connect, I'd be looking for 1 of 3 particular problems.  First, it is
possible (probable?) that you have something different in the security
settings (encryption).  Second, it is possible that you have the AP on a
non-standard frequency that the client is not including in it's scan
list.  The term scan list is a Mikrotik term, but it is common for
most Linux based devices that use the stock Atheros driver to only
scan the standard predefined center frequencies.  The third
possibility that I can think of is a possibility that the AP has some
sort of mac filtering that is not allowing the connection from this
client.  Again, I'm not familiar with StarOS, so I'm not sure that is
 even a feature.

I would start by swapping the functions of the 2 radios (make the AP the
client) just to see if a connection can be made that way.  Double-check
the settings I mentioned above as well.  Another thing to try is attempt
to connect to the AP with a different client just to ensure the AP
function is operating correctly on the radio you are running as AP.
Just a few things to try...Hope this helps.

Re: [WISPA] StarOS Backhaul wont connect???

2009-09-30 Thread RickG
Butch,

You're good! Your comments got me investigating further. The AP
running StarOS v3 (which I'm not as familiar with) did not accept the
freq I put into it and defaulted to an odd freq. The config page
showed the freq I wanted but the status page showed another. I have to
go out to the remote to try it but I have a good feeling it will work.

I have other customers
connected to the AP so its a bit touchy but I will give that a shot
 soon.

This is, I think, the best option.  It is likely to be the most
 definitive test.

If it won't connect to one at -55 but will to -85 I bet it's a config
problem. Or faulty radios.

Cant be faulty since they both will connect to other radios fine. I
checked, double-checked, and triple-checked the configs and they are
correct. Really, StarOS is too easy to make an error. Any other ideas?

I haven't used staros so I can't say much about the software. Can it
see interference from anything or just atheros? If it can see it all
look for something on the same channel.
