Re: [WISPA] Speed Test and XP

2012-12-17 Thread Nick Olsen
I'm not aware of any issues with it. I will note however, That
speedtest.net is a terrible way to test that kind of bandwidth.
Iperf/Mikrotik Bandwidth Test is much better for this.

2012-08-31 Thread Steve Barnes
Ralph as you can see the issue is not how it works out of you network but how
it works in your network. You are getting every kind of answer depending on
where the tester is and what the path looks like between you and them. Like
your text says this pretty close measures the speed on your network.

Looks good and good text.

I've always used myspeed.visualware.com and use the DUlles, VA site
which is a hop or so off the AShburn peering point. They also use
sockets which is more accurate than http. You can always install it on
your own network for your customers.

Re: [WISPA] speed test

We tell them its all dependent on the remote side, And its a very bad way
to gauge speed. The local florida speedtest.net servers suck... Even from
our colo I only get like 40Mb/s down, But like 68Mb/s up, Its stupid. We
just host the mini speedtest.net in our colo and tell them to test that,
And that the server sits right next to fiber, so if they can get xMb/s to
it, That is how fast the internet will go. When they argue that our fiber
is overloaded (its not) and we need to buy more because they can only
pull 2Mb/s from example.com we disagree with them and tell them we can't do
anything once its off our network, But its not a load issue.

We pulled a trick on our customers for awhile, we cached speedtest.net and
speakeasy.net/speedtest then did a dns redirect locally to our local
speedtest servers which we made look identical to the site they went to, so
we could save upstream bandwidth and the customer would get better results..

OK for all your speed hungry customers that want to run speed tests to
speedtest.net http://speedtest.net/ and dslreports.com

really had good results with off net speed tests even when removing the load
and running directly t from my laptop to my fiber connection. But I get

We pulled a trick on our customers for awhile, we cached speedtest.net and
speakeasy.net/speedtest then did a dns redirect locally to our local
speedtest servers which we made look identical to the site they went to, so
we could save upstream bandwidth and the customer would get better results..

OK for all your speed hungry customers that want to run speed tests to
speedtest.net http://speedtest.net/ and dslreports.com
http://dslreports.com/ - the question is: what do you do? I've never
really had good results with off net speed tests even when removing the
load and running directly t from my laptop to my fiber connection. But I
get these people who think they're not getting what they pay for :(

OK for all your speed hungry customers that want to run speed tests to
speedtest.net and dslreports.com - the question is: what do you do? I've
never really had good results with off net speed tests even when removing
the load and running directly t from my laptop to my fiber connection. But I
get these people who think they're not getting what they pay for :(

I can confirm this to be true. An ISP I worked at had issues with packet
loss (collisions) and speed on a 50Mbit OPTEMAN circuit (ATT's Optical
Ethernet offering.) Hard-coding the duplex and speed on that interface
resolved the issues.

Re: [WISPA] Speed test

2010-04-08 Thread Jeremie Chism
We had a 50 Meg pipe that was showing much slower download speeds and
half of what we were supposed to get on upload. Our Cisco was
mistakenly configured to auto negotiate which we corrected and that
fixed the upload. We then found a router on our upstream's network
which was also auto negotiating. They hard coded it and that took care
of the download. From what I understand, with a pipe that size auto
negotiate is the main problem. To show that this was truly the
problem, I unplugged our network andplugged my laptop directly to my
upstream. With auto on, the speed was half. When I hard coded it to
full and 100 I was at 95% of quoted speed. I will find the test we
were using because it showed duplex mismatch and other issues above
our network.

Jeremie, Can you expound on that a little, where it was how you

I had the same issue with some duplex mismatch which showed slow
 speeds.

Does someone have a good connection in the Indiana Ohio Kentucky
area with a Mikrotik who can setup a user for me to do a Bandwidth
test?  I need to test a 50 Meg fiber connection clear out of our
network.  Inside its fine but to all outside speedtest.net sites I
get 1/2 and I need to make sure its not a issue at my upstream
 provider.

Would be a cool test if it didn't incorrectly report my 5 ms network to be a
295 ms network.

No substitute for basic FTP tests.

Anyone know of a speed test script that i can put on my webserver.
Something like dslreports or toast.net has.

Only does download test, but it is easy to install and seems fairly
accurate.
