Find some satellite TV contractors that want to know more. Ive found
them to be pretty skilled and slick at doing quality installs.

I am going to attempt to hire some new CPE installers, as contractors,
paid
by the job (peice work). (I see market rate around $100-$150 per
job -residential).
Finding guys that ALREADY know how to do it correctly, is not likely.
This
brings me to Training.

How are you training the installers? Are you making them do a mandatory

time period shadowing/apprenticing with one of your existing installers?
If
so, does their pay change for that period?
Are you bringing them in-house for a significant duration Trainging
Class?
For example, a 1 week class room training? What minimum requirements do
you
expect them to have to be worthy to be trained? I hear that many are
successfull hiring X-Satelite TV installers, but they are not likely to
have
extensive TCPIP experience.

Its not easy finding a guy thats willing to climb a ladder daily and
also
had his free time being spent as a computer geek. They are two
different
breed people (The worken man and the intellectual). Do you train the
geek to
climb a ladder, or train the ladder climber to be a geek? I find that
applicants that have physical labor backgrounds work faster, and enjoy
their
job as being a wireless installer, as adds many new challenges and is
easier
work. But the training can be tough starting at ground zero, how to
configure the LAPTOP with an IP address. When I employed, and paid by
the
hour or salary, it was pretty easy to figure out who to hire. But
contracting, a whole new set of issues arise.

Hi Travis,

I've been providing on-site training to the WISP and to the larger
broadband wireless industry and have trained over 2000 people since
2001. Unfortunately I can't do it for free and stay in business any more
than a WISP can provide service for free and stay in business. Please
feel free to contact me off-list to discuss how I can help you with your
specific needs.

Best regards,

Hey Dee,

There will be wireless training manuals available for
download and customization on http://www.ispbuddy.com
They will be available in the "Tools" section of the system.

Go to the URL above and signup for the notification list.
There are already several hundred ISP's and Satellite TV
businesses registered and awaiting system details. Plus,
once you're registered, you can send in feature requests
which will be considered for development and addition to
the system.

As you may know, I am working on several technical training classes,
including one that covers "WISP Basics". While the focus of this
class is not exactly what you asked for, it is a good starting
point. However, If you'd like, I can put together a manual for you.
While I'm at it, how many others would be interested in such a
manual? If I did this, it would most likely be a video that covers
such topics as:

* Mounting techniques - rooftop and dss arm type mounts
* Antenna basics - aiming and testing link quality
* Weather proofing - we all know about this
* Cable runs - including basics on how to drill various
materials and where to drill (and not to drill).
Also, "drip loops"
* Grounding
* Termination of LMR and Ethernet cables
* Testing the final install

This is just off the top of my head, but the real question would be
(for me), how many would be willing to pay for such a video...and
what is it worth?

Trango (was Re: [WISPA] Training questions)

2005-08-11 Thread Matt Liotta
While people are taking the opportunity to bash Trango I thought I would
share why we recently dumped Canopy in favor of Trango.

1. The units don't require regular reboots
2. They are easier to install and weather proof
3. The backhauls are true layer 2 bridges
4. Field tests showed stronger links
5. They're cheaper

Granted I am not using their multi-point equipment as we only do
point-to-point link and I still see room for improvement like making a
900Mhz backhaul, using OFDM across their entire product line, etc. I do
think Orthogon makes the best product on the market right now for
point-to-point in terms of performance, features, and install, but the
price isn't right.

months ? Still too early to use it.

How many customers on your largest trango 900 ap ? I'm past 40 on one of ours
(we've got 5 trango 900 pops), and it's plain unreliable. I put canopy 900 up
above it by 20 feet, and I'm swapping people off trango onto canopy and they've
never been happier...

How much are you going to pay us to learn how to BETA TEST "Trango
Firmware" Shayne ? Let me know there is $$ in our favor and I will round
up 100s of people who have lost their asses on your product to show up
and regain some of their lost revenue.
