Re: [WiX-users] how to refer embedded file in the File element?

2006-09-20 Thread Mike Dimmick

Embedded binaries are only for items that you
aren't installing, such as custom action DLLs and graphics used in the
UI. Everything else should go in the (possibly embedded) CAB or as a loose
file.

If trying to invoke a custom action from a DLL you're
installing, you should use the FileKey attribute rather than BinaryKey. You will
obviously have to schedule the CA after the file has been installed in the
execute sequence - so (at least) after InstallFiles.

If you need to invoke the CA before the file has been
installed, you'll either need to embed it using Binary and as a separate
File, or separate the two concerns into different
DLLs.

Hi
All,
I have a file that is embedded
in the msi.

I want to copy the file in my
install location. What should be the syntax in the File element to specify that
it is a embedded binary. E.g. I have a file sbc.dll embedded in the
msi.
Binary
Id="abc.dll" SourceFile="Binary\abc.dll"/

Now I want to copy this dll in
my install location. The file element I am using was

File
Id='EmbeddedDll' Name='abc.dll' LongName='abc.dll' Source='abc.dll' DiskId='1'
Vital='yes' /

But it is not
picking up the way I wanted?
What shpuld be
the syntax here?

You might want to use a self extracting zip and a
modified SFX (use SFXMake for instance) so the setup.exe is started

You can create a self-extracting executable with something
like WinZipSE. I have been using a free self-extacting executable creator called
Zip2SecureExe [1].

Youcan also use IExpress which ships with Windows
XP. Just type IExpress in the Start-Run... box and follow the
wizard.

Don't use them directly. Let MSI create them for you. You want
something like this:

Directory Id="CommonAppDataFolder"
 Directory Id="MyCompanyDataDir"
 Directory Id="MYAPPDATADIR"

Then during the CostFinalize action, MSI will create the public
MYAPPDATADIR property. I'd put your component under that directory
rather than using explicit CreateFolder/RemoveFolder; let MSI manage
the directories. And you can expose that component as a feature and let
the user choose the directory via the normal feature-selection dialog.

[WiX-users] New features in 3.0 vs. 2.0?

2006-09-20 Thread Lorne Laliberte
Hello,

Is there a list of the differences between 2.0 and 3.0 available
anywhere?

From quickly comparing the .chm files and searching the list archive
I've come up with these new features in 3.0. Am I correct? What features
have I missed? :)

- Auto-generation of short file and directory names
- Auto-generate components from file trees (via Heat)
- MSI Validation built into light.exe
- Difxapp schema (Driver Install Frameworks for Applications)
- Iis Schema (Internet Information Services Extension)
- Sql Schema (SQL Server Extension)
- Util Schema (Utility Extension)
- floating Publish elements, so you can attach control events without
changing the dialogs themselves

I'm sure there are other features/differences though. :)

(This kind of information would be helpful in evaluating whether to wait
for a stable 3.0 release or to use 2.0.)

Thanks Bob. However, we need to allow
the user to specify the directory, including the drive. I cant use
the CommonAppDataFolder; at least, not beyond using it as a
default path. Usually, my users will store data on a different
drive. I need to create the data directory and set specific user

Hmmm... I had expected the shortcuts to display in the order
that they are installed, absent any other ordering. Looking
at the Shortcut table in Orca as well as the log of an install,
I can see they are not being displayed in that order.

Following a hint in your note, I reordered the shortcuts
by hand, uninstalled and reinstalled. The shortcuts retain
their order in spite of being removed XP must be caching
this order info somewhere.

For better testing, I'd like to know where that is and
clear it out periodically. Any ideas?

Correct.
 I
guess my question is: what hope do I have? Is there a definite expectation
for more languages to be done?

Gabor's localization project page is at
http://www.tramontana.co.hu/wix/loc/index.php. It shows French as being
finished. It's not in the WiX distribution, likely because of the
paperwork involved. Italian is still marked open.

Odds are impossible to calculate. Well, accurate ones anyway.g As a
volunteer effort, it's all scratch an itch -- apparently there hasn't
been a big need for Italian UI yet. That said, though localization isn't
cheap, there aren't that many strings involved -- ~230 for the dialogs
and ~350 for the action text and error messages. I wonder if someone
managed the translation process with a translation company, could the
WiX community collect enough donations to make it cheap?
Also, I should throw another question in while I'm at it. Will WiX 3.0 have
a different GUI? Will that invalidate all the existing languages? Or will
the existing language files be updated at the same time?

WiX v3 might get additional UI sets. (I checked in the beginnings of one
last night.) As most of the dialogs are reused, it doesn't invalidate
the existing translations but some strings will be unavailable. The sets
shared between v2 and v3 are still valid.

Re: [WiX-users] How to create single installable exe

2006-09-20 Thread Alexei Boukirev
Hello vij,

You already have the tool if you have IE6 installed: iexpress.exe

It's part of IEAK (Internet Explorer Administration Kit).

Run it once, go through wizard, let it create *.sed file. Edit .sed
file to change file paths to relative if necessary. Now you can build
a self-extracting CAB by running

  iexpress /n yourconfig.sed

Search on the Web for iexpress to get info on other command line
switches, .sed file format, etc.

If not, I think you need one

Our MSI is designed to prompt the user to uninstall a
previous version of the product.

This function is working for ENGLISH but not for any
other language of the MSI.

After reading the docs, I found the ExcludeLanguages=yes flag so now here is my
syntax:

Upgrade Id=snip

UpgradeVersion RemoveFeatures=All Property=snip IgnoreRemoveFailure=yes ExcludeLanguages=yes /

/Upgrade

However
its still not working anyone got a hint?

Re: [WiX-users] Quick question on upgrade checking

2006-09-20 Thread Jeff MacDuff

It's still not working for me... here's what I did:

I looked at the new msi ( the one we are building now ) and in the
upgrade table it has a upgrade code.

I then looked at the old MSI in orca, and in it's property table it has
the exact same GUIDS for it's upgrade code.

Is there any execection order I need to worry about for the upgrade
check or something?

I am getting really stumped... I actually copied the upgrade code from
the old MSI via orca and put it directly into my new WIX project.. I
rebuilt but still it doesn't work.

Hi,

After reading the MSDN and Wix help (at the end of my email) I think
that you can ommit the ExcludeLanguages attribute since you do not
use the Language attribute. Anyway I think it should work as you want.
Try to check the resulting MSI file with ORCA (or any other viewer)
and look at the Upgrade Table.

I know that I have not help you much, but...

__

msdn: Upgrade Table
Language
The set of languages detected by FindRelatedProducts. Enter
msidbUpgradeAttributesLanguagesExclusive in Attributes to detect all
languages exclusive of those listed in Language. If Language is null
or an empty string (), FindRelatedProducts ignores
msidbUpgradeAttributesLanguagesExclusive and detects all languages.

Wix Help:
Language
Specifies the set of languages detected by FindRelatedProducts.
Enter a list of numeric language identifiers (LANGID) separated by
commas (,). Leave this value null to specify all languages. Set
ExcludeLanguages to yes in order detect all languages, excluding
the languages listed in this value.

Thanks for the reply. I probably should have mentioned that I had seen the

while. Anyway, I'll do what I can.

(Sorry, if this gets sent twice. I always get some sort of error the first

Then it seems to work on the following try.)

Matthew:

Did you have an IP address attribute originally? In my case, all of our

elements have an IP address attribute. We had to do this because we are

creating multiple web site / web application entries in IIS on our
servers.
Instead of using Virtual Directories, we add additional IP addresses to
the
NIC card and associate each web site / web application to its own IP
address.

I believe that in my case, the error actually was the buffer overflow
created when you have multiple web sites on a machine.

I figured out what my problem was and want to post it just so others
searching for this might find it. The real problem was the second
error:
Failed to find web root.

I found by scouring the net for general installer problems like this
that my installer was likely failing to find the root of the
designated,
pre-existing website because it's definition was too ambiguous. In my
case, my website definition was lacking an 'ip' address entry. Even
though I didn't want to put a specific IP address in there (we have
many
environments where this .msi will have to be installed) I entered a '*'
in the wix script as a placeholder for the IP entry. Then the installer
worked fine.

I'm having this exact same problem. I updated to the latest weekly
build
of Wix (2.0.4423.0) and it still does the same thing during the
install.

The machine it's installing to is Windows Server 2003 with IIS 6.0. We
have a total of 15 websites configured in IIS. The installer I'm
running
is installing a virtual directory to a website that already exists.
That
website component is marked 'ConfigureIfExists=no'.

Just for fun, I tried to install a new website and the same thing
happened. I've pasted the verbose log up to the part where it errors
out.

Thanks!
