In a video interview John Cage did toward the end of his life, he said:
"I have nothing to say and I am saying it" and smiled his beautiful smile into
the camera. This statement seems to be, to me, if not the sole essenceof
Cage's program, at least one of them. I say that as someone who has
listened to his music most of my life, taught his poems to my students, and
who met him once. His memory and his example mean a great deal tome.
Regards, Tom Savage

Dear, dearTom,

That's a saying a lot. Reminds me ofDostoevsky's Notes from Underground
(everything I like does)and that famousline from Judgment at Nuremburg "I
was aware".

I worked for a few years in state prisons -- that line haunts me. But
mostly because of what I know ofmyself. God bless John Cage for exposing
another one lasttruth. We are all aware, we all know it and there is
nowhereto hide. Say what we will. There is nothing more or less to say
and he said it -- but I just like repeating it for the feel of it in my
mouth.

   Best wishes--

2007-05-01 Thread Lewis LaCook

I walk through a storm
when everything is blue.
A car furiously escapes, peeling
mosquito shaves from grounded

air. And lightning shrivelling
such aimless skies tonight.
We’ll work through this together,
but my feet cripple me later, by

then all those houses stick to them.
She started talking about
ghosts and killings and shit.
I guess you know what I mean; colds

arrange their fluent sheaves
around us, as on Toledo Road
as on North Ridge, arresting walking
sleep: this is a fuck of demon.

They connect behind the
Circle-K. I’ll speak to you
in lights, and kneel. You’ve never
lost anything. I win. Blue breath.

Both - Xanax Pop, by Lewis LaCook

2007-04-11 Thread Lewis LaCook

   Both

Is it? Oh, I’m sorry. Sometimes it feels as if my fingers lock up, and
I’m alone on the bed, cupping my rage like my stepfather did, or
sleeping off the annoyances.

It’s the ease that does it. How easy it is for everyone else. The sky
grays out, as if disabled; clicking on that sky brings you nothing. Then
rain furs the bare trees, fuzzing the edges off everything, and it’s too
cold to think. When will Winter leave us alone, or beat us up?

I like one or the other. Not both.

Walking from one room to the next, holding in front of her the copper
rods, waiting for them to cross over water, over pregnancies, over the
dead and their awkward ashes. In this box, note how your memories curl
at the edges, licked by invisible fire, but slowly, almost imperceptible.

It would be a whole lot simpler if we just disappeared. I’d never have
to bloat and blue in an August cold; I’d never have to serrate to dust,
to become aloof to changing. A current of everything happening always
smothers our corposes. Always. they’re in the way.

She remains very calm while addressing me.

Icing on the cupholders - Xanax Pop by Lewis LaCook

2007-04-09 Thread Lewis LaCook
I distrust gestalt. Now that we're snowed in for spring, a potential
energy snakes through your cold stiff fingers. I doubt that you can
even hear me above you, murmuring, venting. Your own tongue could
breathe you.

But I suppose I'd better stick to themes. Here's one: I shit myself
that first night, seeing you again after Winter Break. I yes fell out of
my own ass.

There's more of this than you think.

The annuals secrete icing on the cupholders, cream loudly against paper
rocks, scissor extravagent recitation as if on cue and as if asked, like
it says on your lousy t-shirt. Perennials, sigh, perennials, sigh,
perennials, sigh, perennials, sigh. I shit stars to blank hole jupiter
pins. I blend you in an nodal kinship skin. Perennials sigh perrenials,
sigh perennials, sigh perennials, sigh perennials. Cigarette footprints.

Three shadows - Xanax Pop by Lewis LaCook

2007-04-03 Thread Lewis LaCook
The full moon trawls for ice behind Sheffield Centre. She likened it to
swimming liquid vinyl, how quiescent bubbles effused solder, how her
shoulders slipped out of place, leaving her staggering breathless
through a ruddy underbrush, maybe even thatched.

I was dreaming when I wrote this. I was interfacing with languaged.

His evasiveness indicates that he has issues with relinquishing control
to others. The trees on Clifton blacken and fan. He dreams this night
about being prostrate before a car.

That night of three shadows point me out.

The same night of Housing Projects from the Seventies.

She trawls a fur over stumps. She drags behind her those fractions of
faces she thought to keep.

A precious fluid

2007-03-19 Thread Lewis LaCook

 A precious fluid

The lamp swings back and forth, raking its yellow light across my
unwashed head. I tried to hold sleep in like a precious fluid, something
I needed to breathe with; instead, cats howled through the morning. This
goodie case contains all our shame. I make sure to eat your paprikas as
soon as I jump out of bed, to slather my morning breath with onions.
Without coffee, cigarettes taste brittle, acrid: paper dissolving to
blister on the chafe of the lips. At the height of seeing these angles,
seraphim measured out holograms of lovers long dead to sunshine, long
morose like wetly-packed bread, and I laughed while tied to the bed,
mussing softly her insides with a plugin or with messy code. How many
times has something stopped working? Before these doors rattle open,
along the slipperest of buttery etchings, tubers tie our eyes together
just below the soil, and bulbs burst.

Crazed with light, and not
harder than pert alms.
Yeast tempers our blood

Danger! my butterfly dreams are trying to tell you something

2007-03-07 Thread Lewis LaCook

Danger! my butterfly dreams are trying to tell you something

I don't want to put you in any danger. Wood grains and yellow hanging
lamps piss all over the walls in that room you want into, clouding the
drywall with a smell you can lick off your fingers, leaning back and
letting one thin coverlet is dead. Young David Collins can sit in the
garden confiding in his "ghostly friend," or querying her: "I know who's
dead," she explains. These days the feelings swarm and subside like
watching a beach wrinkle and disturb her. As far as it's now known,
what's important is that men become men again, or mountains mountains,
or maybe my butterfly dreams are trying to tell you something. My
butterfly dreams are trying to tell you something. Sometimes needs
eclipse self, or sometimes even the seams drill us with ferocious and
lovely light. Sure, you wanna save everybody, but from what, and just
/where/ will you whisk them off to? I'm impaled on sweetness, rubbing
sugar into the wound.

Everywhere you step
can snap. I wouldn't
want you to hurt it

King's Woods : The A-history of Lorain, Ohio - a data-driven networked hypertext by Lewis LaCook

http://www.lewislacook.org/kingswoods/index.html
<http://www.lewislacook.org/kingswoods/index.html>

/King's Woods/ is a data-driven, networked hypertext poem that utilizes
information about both the history and present of the city of Lorain,
Ohio, and grows with each subsequent user's experience of the work. It's
a poetic response to the city, and as such many of the work's features
are dependent on it; the positioning, length, and opacity of certain
elements rely on weather information about Lorain (the current
temperature, the days until the next full moon, etc)...

I saw a burning car on 28th Street

2007-02-27 Thread Lewis LaCook

These details and their temporal degradation
spit stillness and reciprocal snow
At night, carillons scream like gulls
streaming through sexually-bruised skies

and lighting on the relief of faces
You smile as if this were understanding
The fire department, slow to respond, hungry
slide as if on strings down the street

and reach a conflagration. Somehow
we're holding hands, maybe
to ward off the vicious pink of the clouds
Anyway, we're in love, adjacent

and content as per this series of treaties
That haunted pang still hurts when I walk

This cold against my bones - Xanax Pop, by Lewis LaCook

2007-02-06 Thread Lewis LaCook
This cold against my bones
I am feeling this cold against my bones,
a million-miles-an-hour crystal razor.

Took a pill just this morning, white sky guts
glossing the carpet, the jets
Mary's congress and need of congress with her
waking me every morning to kiss and say
goodbye. I have this happiness.
There's always been a running in me
away, which I'm getting over now.
Ice is slow. Ice is beautiful.

Not everything can be beautiful?

Blushing susie - xanaxpop.org

2007-02-02 Thread Lewis LaCook
Though in all honesty three is enough. Blushing susie shows it to us, tripled
along the spine where ridges accrue snow's flaccid erasure. She just lifts up
her shirt. Four, of course, would be too kind. You're too kind. You watch the
snow bouncing along the yellow halo of the streetlight; they're all yellow and
blue, to soothe and prick, the silence of the road having some time before
caused us to pull over and sleep. With her chin in her hand, as if she's
thinking. Everything is beautiful in winter if you're low enough on the food
chain to have to look up. The sky fractured porcelain fissured by bare famished
trees. Footprints wrinkle the snow along Florida ave, making commerce possible
by clearing a snug path for us young, us languishing into ages here. The sun
even at this angle flirts with us.

Five would simply be too much.

Ohio is warm and sick with winds - Xanax Pop - The Poetry of Lewis LaCook

2007-01-05 Thread Lewis LaCook
Ohio is warm and sick with winds.
Trains moan through winter evening dark,
memorializing distance. Explosions poppy,
woven from pixels from an abandoned game

in the woods; Alex found an arm there,
lying on the grass. It was grasping coughs.
This is what it means to be precious.

The War rouged over, grumpy, wearing your
sweater, won't cool if you blow on it.
We grew up in imagined engines, in graveyards
lying face-down among a pool of rhododendron.

We made honey. And all our lower levels flood.

Back in the late nineties, I collaborated with musician Mike Vaughn on a
project/band called Zik Dwahrgma.

We were essentially a pop band with a dada bent--which kinda put us on the outs
with the music scene in Kent, Ohio, at the time, which seemed to consist mostly
of punk acts and hippie jam bands.

Lately, I've been listening to some of this stuff...I still love how pithy
these songs are, and their humor. They give me a contact buzz to this day

Java Bean Salad :: Xanax Pop, by Lewis LaCook

2006-12-28 Thread Lewis LaCook
Java Beans is a component architecture
for Java. It's finally a little later.
Winter hits us strangely here on
the Black River, green and snaked

with disease. Everyone's coughing
as they wait in line for
the guillotine. My quills
adrift in liquors distilled from
everything else. I'd gladly

trade my foreground with your
background, if only a little later
you'd hold me as I shook the rain
from my head. Rolling off
the hot tin roof, I'm a fool to believe

that subclassing the atmosphere
and parsing the distances between
myself and other people will ever

stop me from eating the centers from
everyone I love.

Seamlessly sick - Xanax Pop, by Lewis LaCook

2006-12-22 Thread Lewis LaCook
You walk water towns, faceless and arrogant.
Dripping crystal limbs of pure light.

Dripping crystal lint of puree light.
You walk water tower faces, endlessly ignorant.

Endlessly raining, seamlessly sick.
Drifting critical patch. Pretty life.
Endlessly faceful, determined to saturate.

Light purls. Gingerly forceful,
You walk water, down to faceless.

Ending arrogance.

Eleanor Rigby (...jiggy with it at last!)

2006-12-21 Thread Lewis LaCook

...with blur for a head. Torrents churn beneath the architecture, which has
become a neutral word for me, and denotes all this scaffolding crashing down
around my bare ankles. One pill wakes my ass up and sets me to thinking. Donald
Knuth, The Art of Computer Programming, Vol I II III IV. I'm trying to accept
everyone for who they are, and not for what I feel they could be if they
weren't so damned stupid. Poems are no different than eating, sleeping,
discarding of waste by-products (shit, piss, but not semen, semen isn't waste).
I save them in a jar behind the door, Eleanor Rigby! I've never understood
their precocity. But for the most part I feel that my life has passed beneath
streetlamps, somewhere in the menagerie mash-up of Lorain's drunk streets,
mistaken by passersby for a girl because my hair is long, because I stumble
blurting poetry or I stumble bleeding pictures. I think the males' heads fill
up with nitrous oxide at age 13, and don't deflate until they're 30. No doubt,
this can be deconstructed. Flies on a rail. The flood of flower rouge, of funky
latitudes engaging jasmine sacrilige, jiggy with it at last! The work of the
Damned...

They have their mother in their pockets

2006-12-13 Thread Lewis LaCook
The screen burns my eyes out, so now I can see
the true nature of in-itself, which is Mary
and the kids flutter at the edges of their world.
They have their mother in their pockets, in Iraq,

where hungry Americans eat history. All told,
code is obsessive with maps, even when girls
grow into and out of unbounded crags. In fact,
the kids soak up any drop of pressure they can,

and Mary just hates herself most of the time. Back
of the mouth and through a rough void, the shellac
hardens, and kids grow into and out of their world.
Even if I'm blind, I still drown, just like you.

Movies run backwards, movies we unfurled.
The film on my eyes is where we're all trapped.

Poetry Blog RSS Feeds Compiled into an OPML file

2006-11-15 Thread Lewis LaCook

Hey kids!

I'm hopelessly addicted to RSS...just can't get
enough of Real Simple Syndication...the idea that I can keep pace with all the
posts on all my favorite blogs in one convenient spot has prompted hours of
reading pleasure...

To that end, and because I like to give others
pleasure as often as possible (laughs sinisterly), I've compiled an .opml of my
favorite poetry blogs...an .opml is a file that compiles rss feeds for news
aggregators...the aggregator I use is RSS Owl, which I use mostly because it's
built on the Eclipse platform, which I use every day anyway for
code...

Here's the link to the .opml:

http://www.lewislacook.org/Poetry.opml

And here's a link to RSS Owl, which I highly
recommend:

http://www.rssowl.org/

To use the file, simply import it into your
aggreator and enjoy! And if anyone knows of any poetry blogs that are worth
checking out and adding, drop me a line...

Liquid dimples/Electric Boogaloo!

2006-09-01 Thread Lewis LaCook

Liquid dimples

Webster's defines "Privation" as:

  What Mary must be missing is the time of smooth silence and sinuous glass;
light quelled for Autumn, Summer's riot brought to its knees and sighing,
sighing, sighing to be released. I'd sign anything she put in front of me, as
long as I could use your signature. Liquid dimples pepper spice, lying before
us indolently and secure; from somewhere else a light breeze coiled its hair.
Remember to shower, it says. Don't forget to re-attach the arms and legs of
your favorite action figures. What Mary needs to understand about the Kingbury
Run murders is that memory lets you pick stuff up, like cellphone convos or
LMFAO at RTFM. Just how much fun is Slinky, tumbling down Brady Bunch
stairs like the musculature of the serpent, just before Atari 2600 rats us out
to Homeland Security? I don't feel so secure, I'll tell you what. I'll tell
you what Mary needs, or I'll start needing it too.
Me, I'm missing the smooth cilia along the throat where laughter pushes that
stalwart wind.

Electric Boogaloo!

Webster's defines "Doubt" as:

Teach me electric boogaloo, Don Juan! To Obiwan this string-dark dope, this
painful escape, this singing singed but blasted from tapping, and to hell with
Bing Crosby! Bio-Dome is from an auteur! Bound head to ass, dead AIDS
genomes, deepening with fiscal siphoning, or I must have gone home with
children unbeknownst of time, empire. You get 'em together and they make
cameras to watch one another around each others' things. Waist-deep asleep,
Mary, smooth brown soothing white, the Oracle ovoid with a round emptiness
dangling from her mouth as she snores, oh boy! I wanted to get away from music
for a change. Did you feel this shift into a major key? Gosh! Victory becomes
civil when mornings roam unimpeded through Volvo graves. Polite but
  impregnable, I'm lactating from pure tattoos of the essence of objects;
naturally, to pry Idea from Form. I'm a human beatbox in the cave but I swerve
between evolving and fumes! I'm a human beatbox in the cave but I'm a virgin,
too, when it comes to getting through this.
Wave your hands in the air. Swing them like you just don't care.

2006-08-18 Thread Lewis LaCook

goldencrimsonbrown

Webster's defines "This brilliantly planned and orchestrated crime"
as:

Mike and I talk Art in unsophisticated terms, which means we really talk
art. I'm rolling my own cigarettes, and it snows shreds of goldencrimson brown
flakes that expand when you breathe them in. Such is my desire to fill me with
whatever air can offer. Leslie calls looking but I can't do much, clean my
glasses with Windex thinking that maybe it's just my eyes, the soft edges of
objects defining themselves but weakly, in kiwi Frankenstein. Mary reads
Donald Barthelme's The Dead Father--I wonder what she thinks of such
a scattered, fragile thing? Were those nightmares when I was a kid really
about the dumpster behind Lakeview Elementary? I went walking down there the
other night, stoned, listening on headphones to a music made without
instruments, and the house my father died in creeped me out so much I hurried.
Two mannish silhouettes will follow you. Why do I never share with anyone
whatever seems sacred to me? You're tailed by two poolish eyes, glinting off
the second-story window of the house my father died in. You're just right,
Mary, because you too are restless inside, like really restless, and we share
an gorgeous instability, raucous and ravening. Shaun Ryder raves on. You
dreamed when you were a kid that you were a butterfly's man, and you moved
volute wings via sexed pulleys via tracks.
Mine. Mine mine mine.

Seduction

Webster's defines "Modernism" as:

That's the point at which the working artist realizes she has whored her
senses out to the public. It was, with valour and honour, a central
preoccupation of the aristocratic spheres. Around my nipples velvet stars
burst like the first bite of just-ripened pear. In my olive pants I drip with
saltwater, dropping fish in shimmering lines across the sides that I walk. The
Law precludes dulcimers, zeniths, and chlamydia. That's the spot where each
sentence enters the next slowly, issuing from its tail. The birth of threaded
blocks. Nothing is less certain today than sex, behind the liberation of its
discourse. This is touch-talking, or the true language of objects. My
half-sister works in a Wiccan store. Valves. It would seem that I have either
  lost rhythm, or lost conciousness.
The drum provides a sense of continuity, interspersed through bleached tones.

Today a cupped sun fritters sloth hours - Xanax Pop, by Lewis LaCook

Webster's defines "Exposition" as:

The space which I previously inhabited, as fast as I can: Lying like a
black stream of cat, allay'd. Yellow between carbonations. Butane roughens up

Slim. Today a cupped sun fritters sloth hours. I have houses behind me in

A lichen of cholera :: Xanax Pop by Lewis LaCook

2006-08-04 Thread Lewis LaCook

Webster's defines "Suffering" as:

Let me tell you the peace. Children rolled in thin sheets this season
nominate flea-foam from kitten mouths for currency. I'll trade that bound for
fuel to smoke this. Take your mp3-player for a walk; under your skin, within
it, time mints a lichen of cholera in technological colors, to trade for
kinetics. Everyone I'm related to carries food for hours. When we get to the
table, the stylesheet makes it very clear we should wait. To belong to a
class, one must display similar properties, or declare oneself as an
extension. You know, the feeling you get when you're surrounded by familiar
forms, flowing through familiar tasks. This commonality, sometimes expressed
by reciprocal language, sets your partner at ease; half the time, all we
really want is a mirror. But then sometimes, when I'm walking along minding my
own business, I wish the pavement would collapse, and my next step be
  falling.
But mostly, branches moaning with leaves.

The cigarette sits on the desk before me: Xanax Pop by Lewis LaCook

2006-08-01 Thread Lewis LaCook

The cigarette sits on the desk before me

Webster's defines "Public Speech" as:

It's like sleeping in water breathing in water it's like, beads of sweat
popping inside your clothes in little wet flowers, little wet mouths. The
cigarette sits on the desk before me. How long have I inhabited this divine
confusion, where you define finitude as somewhat slanted and enchanted? Five
common PHP design patterns, she says, but while she sleeps this sleek sincere
elation. I haven't been outside in days. It's a bit like holding your breath
until your blood cries out from the dust, froid, froid, froid! You've seen
that movie, haven't you? In your sleep your hair dances within the currents. I
crush my breath out on it as it waves by, and I think about the many ways we
have to represent water, how hard it is for 3-D Computer Graphics to represent
these in-betweens of states of mater, liquid and haze, smoke and ocean, fire,
  fire, fire.
I think too of the gradations. There is only the Literal, my dear, and these
shades are just other states we know exist, but rarely touch. Why do we limit
what we know to these abrupt endings?

I moved through learning to swim moods as well
I moved through all the phases of all the things I saw
  I moved to Virginia
  I moved to Ohio
  The President rimming Israel
See how this foul hole lowers itself to me?
See how I move through Lebanon, as all things are fluid
  Especially blood
See how I move among volume like a hole
See how I move among volume like a hole
See how I move among volume like a hole

Bob--

The last stanza of this gives me friggin' chills.
Excellent stuff; I always look forward to reading your work. It's travelled
widely since I first saw it.
