[WSG] Australian accessiblitly and the law?
I know 5pm on friday is not a great time to ask this kind of question but I have just been reading some documention (below) which seems to suggest (could be my friday mind reading it wrong) that pretty much /all/ Australian websites are covered by the DDA? Is this the case? Thanks for your thoughts. James Accessibility http://www.humanrights.gov.au/disability_rights/standards/www_3/www_3.html 2.2 Equal Access is Required by Law The provision of information and online services through the Worldwide Web is a service covered by the DDA. Equal access for people with a disability in this area is required by the DDA where it can reasonably be provided. This requirement applies to any individual or organisation developing a Worldwide Web page in Australia, or placing or maintaining a Web page on an Australian server. This includes pages developed or maintained for purposes relating to employment; education; provision of services including professional services, banking, insurance or financial services, entertainment or recreation, telecommunications services, public transport services, or government services; sale or rental of real estate; sport; activities of voluntary associations; or administration of Commonwealth laws or programs. All these are areas specifically covered by the DDA. [WSG] How to insert QuickTime on website and validate like XHTML?
Hi, In one of websites which I am doing I must put virtual visits done in QuickTime. If I use EMBED to see the visits in not-IE navigators, website will not validated like XHTML. Some solution? I already know the solutions for the Flash like Flash Satay, but I don't know how apply it to a QuickTime. Hello All But the sad thing is that HREOC et al don't really have the time to enforce compliance. The onus is really on the consumer to make a case to enforce / persuade accessibility conformance through the courts. The Commonwealth and Police games are coming up! Re: [WSG] Australian accessiblitly and the law?
suggest (could be my friday mind reading it wrong) that pretty much /all/ Australian websites are covered by the DDA? Not pretty much, but ALL Australian web pages. The Disability Discrimination Act is really quite clear on this. Back in mid-June last year, Roger Hudson's accessibility talk explained how the DDA affected us as web developers. The Act states everybody, regardless of impairment, should have the same rights to information. Simply making information publicly available on the web is regarded as offering a service, and is covered by the DDA. Most countries have similar laws. Roger's presentation is available for download at http://webstandardsgroup.org/go/resource4.cfm Roger will be discussing accessibility at Web Essentials, Sep 30 - Oct 1 http://we04.com/presenters.cfm#hudson And finally, Roger will cover Does your website expose you to the risk of legal action? at the free Web Essentials briefing in Sydney, Jul 1. http://we04.com/briefing.cfm -ben * The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ See http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm for some hints on posting to the list getting help *

RE: [WSG] Problem with floated divs in gallery site
John, I do like your idea of using the program method of working out the padding for the top. That's an excellent idea. I'm in the process of making my own ColdFusion picture gallery ready for sharing with others, and this trick of yours will go well with it. Very elegant answer I think! And the finished page looks terrific too. Well done. RE: My problem with floated divs in gallery site - and trying to get those thumbnail images to align at the bottom. I've solved the problem - in two ways - and thanks for those suggestions. You'll find the result at: http://www.bluemountainsgardener.info/fgtest/max_miller_solved.asp It shows both solutions - the first using divs and the second using a CSS table. Both are on the same page with CSS embedded. The results look exactly the same in IE6, Mozilla 1.5 and Opera 7.23 I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Apple Mac browsers !! For the div version, I used program code (ASP) to subtract each thumbnail's height from 100 (the maximum height of any thumbnail) and made that the value for *padding-top* as an inline style for the img tag. As each thumbnail is a live link to a bigger image on a different page, I ended up having to add a*border='0'* attribute to the image tag to get rid of the link-induced border around the image plus the padding. This was sloppy coding, I know, but it was so late at night!! Re: [WSG] Problem with floated divs in gallery site
John, All you really need to consider on the Mac is Safari (which displays pretty much identically to the Mozilla browsers in almost all cases) and IE Mac, which has its little share of idiosyncratic MS bugs. As far as the others are concerned (the Mozilla browsers and Opera) they share the same codebase on Mac and PC, so no need generally to test on both platforms. (This does not take into account odd legacy bugs in various previous incarnations of those browsers, on both platforms.) Congrats on working out a solution to your problem! And to set your mind at rest, the page displays identically on Safari (1.2) and IE 5.2.3 Mac. -Hugh Todd The results look exactly the same in IE6, Mozilla 1.5 and Opera 7.23 I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Apple Mac browsers !! * The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ See http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm for some hints on posting to the list getting help *

Kyle Barrow wrote: Once user agent if...else or switch statements enter your code, you begin the walk down the slippery slope to code obsolescence, especially with mobiles. True, but I never suggested indiscriminate usage. While in most cases it over used, and therefor best to avoid, judicious use can both be proper and beneficial. In the case of mobiles, I would recommend, where a suspect browser is involved, send the same CSS via both handheld and screen types. At least that way, if they fix their browser, it still works. If a new browser comes along (which isn't built broken), you're still safe. * The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ See http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm for some hints on posting to the list getting help *
Re: [WSG] Site Deconstruction, those crafty Germans
Hi, Thanks, as this topic caused a bit of unrest last evening. After looking in terms of a gathering in which diverse taste need accommodation, serving one vegetarian entree as an alternative is just courteous. Browser sniffing, can be used in such a manner to allow a seamless experience for non-plug in users, or wireless. Serving (1) standards based alternative, not a buffet of little hacks to please every UA. So I look forward to adding this technique to my tool kit, as with any tool, to be called upon only when needed. Complexity is good, complicated is bad.
