RE: [WSG] Embedding Flash
Hi Johan, That page fails (displays an empty text box) on Win98SE, IE5.5, Flash 7,0,1,9,0. The big problem with Satay that I found is that on one machine it will work fine, then on another with the exact same OS, IE and Flash versions it fails with the empty text box problem. See the comments in the original Satay article on ALA, where others have found this problem. As you said, both validating methods have issues, and AFAIK there is not a more reliable method that is valid. I have recently been testing Satay, and I have seen it fail on various setups, and have given up on it. RE: [WSG] Embedding Flash
Ian, I asked a very similar question a while ago. The consensus seemed to be that there was no consensus. I recently used Ian Hix's method: http://ln.hixie.ch/?start=1081798064&count=1 to place Flash files on our site (http://www.alucida.com/software/sw_wsDemo_01.html if you're interested, links to pop-up windows containing Flash files at the bottom of the page). This validates as HTML 4.0, not XHTML strict, so the answer to your question may very well be 'no'. Re: [WSG] question about iframe accessibility
Ted - the content between the iframe tags doesn't need to be hidden or commented out; in browsers that support iframes, it's automatically replaced by the content specified in the source attribute, otherwise it's shown. Think of it a little bit like the noframes or noscript tags in old school HTML, where people usually just put something like "Sorry, your browser doesn't support iframes ...". RE: [WSG] question about iframe accessibility
Here's what I figured out. When you have a frame, you need to specify what the content is. You could do this with a title tag or even better, distinct text in the body of the frame. for instance, you would say, this is the navigation frame. I did both. Re: [WSG] question about iframe accessibility
It's asking for some default text or content between the iframe tags, which will be displayed by any browser unable to support iframes or load the content specified in the src attribute - the main culprit these days is NN4, but I'm not sure of the mileage for text-based or non-visual browsers. [WSG] question about iframe accessibility
We are using a popup calendar for forms on our site and it uses an iframe for the calendar. I'm getting this message from the developers toolbar 508 checker Rule: 1.1.6 - All IFRAME elements are required to contain element content. * Failure - IFRAME Element at Line: 362, Column: 1 I'm not very familiar with iframes. What do you think it is asking for? Here's a reference page http://v4.csatravelprotection.com/csa/twelcome.do and the appropriate code: There is a javascript that populates this iframe. Do you think the validation engine would be happy with a simple comment tag inside the iframe before the javascript populates it? I'll try for the heck of it. Any other ideas? Re: [WSG] css validation error
Thanks John and Ryan - the problem was something to do with the menu list item styles. It was way down the bottom of the page - I was going crazy because I thought that error report referred to the body style (which was at the top of the page). I only realised that must have been the problem when I noticed the font family for the menu list item was unneccessarily specified and removed it - after that it validated. I could have left out a bracket or colon, I don't know, but it worked when it was gone. regards, cameron. Ryan Christie wrote: I just checked out your CSS file, and it validates now. Re: [WSG] New website launch
This seems weird to me as the layout uses a fixed width centred div of 700px and html has min-width:700px specified + there's an extra div#mozscroll which is also 700px so the browser really ought to add scrollbars when its width falls below 700px ... or am I misinterpreting min-width? Any ideas anyone? James That wort of seems like beating a dead horse right there. If something has width:700px;, declaring min-width:700px; defeats the purpose. min-width is the maximum allowed shrinkage a site will allow with a resized browser window *before* it will not shrink further and adds in scrollbars. To be effwctive in this case, the min-width would need to be a smaller value than 700px. It's also a bit screwy in Opera 6.0 on the Mac. In Firefox (1.0PR) and Mozilla (1.7.2) on WinXP no horizontal scroll bars appear when the page exceeds the browser window (Opera 7.2.3 and IE6 seem fine). Re: [WSG] Footer stuff
At 06:22 PM 9/19/2004, Amit Karmakar wrote: What is better in terms of semantics and accessibility? stuff | more stuff stuff too | more stuff again or stuff | more stuff stuff too | more stuff again Amit, I suppose you need to ask yourself, why are you splitting the list visually into two rows? Is it because you're grouping the items in semantic pairs, or is it because two items are all that seem to fit, given your particular font size and container width? Guessing that your reason for splitting the list is presentational, not semantic, I'd go with the unordered list where the split into rows can be handled by CSS. One way to do this would be to assign the block LIs "float: left;" and the UL a constraining width. The list items will fill out the list width and then wrap to the next row. Depending on the width of their container, this might be one row or two or more. If you change your page layout in the future to make the container wider or narrower, you won't have to worry about moving that pesky line-break -- your list will break naturally at the new width. On the other hand, if you're splitting the list for semantic reasons, I'd still use UL/LI, but I'd make each sub-group of items its own unordered list: item 1 item 2 item 3 item 4 As to your list separators, I don't believe unordered lists are supposed to contain anything but LIs, so your " | " characters between LIs wouldn't validate. I've used various methods to get around this. One way is to include the delimiter in each list item: item 1 | item 2 item 3 | item 4 Another way is to give the delimiters their own list items: item 1 | item 2 item 3 | item 4 I don't really like either method when I'm considering the delimiter to be presentational, not semantic. I don't use the :after pseudo-element yet, only because it doesn't work cross-browser. An alternative that utilizes CSS is to introduce the delimiter as a background image for selected items. Of course, this doesn't advance one's CSS karma, because in order to assign the delimiter to selected items it's necessary to mark those items in HTML: item 1 item 2 item 3 item 4 This is, in fact, flagging presentation in HTML, so we haven't advanced much if any from the old school. Any suggestions for how to exit the box?
