Oops, seems I sent the msg too soon, and someone already recommended the

Another thought, instead of searching image rotator, have you searched for
"slideshows"?

Hi all,

I thought this would be an easy one to Google, but yet I find myself
here again asking your professional opinions :)

Trying to find a script for random image rotation on a website.
Meaning the images would rotate every 5 seconds or so automatically,
without the need for a refresh. The only requirements would be:

- A fade effect between the rotating images.
- A fall back so users without javascript will still get a single image.

Any links would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Paul

2007-07-12 Thread ByteDreams
On this jQuery examples page is a something similar to what you want, using
the jQuery library and unordered list with links. I guess if you enclose
the script within a condition like if javascript=true that would take care
of folks that disable javascript. I'm not a javascript programmer, however,
but you might be able to figure something out.

looked around to no avail. Any suggestions for where to look, how to look,
or anything you use that fits the bill?

Requirements are images, postings, replies to the original posting plus
ability to respond to individual posts. The site is a UK charitable
organization that needs the posts to be monitored, anonymous, and secure.

The real trick here is being able to pull this off without fancy programming
skills. I am willing to host wherever is necessary instead of hosting on my
regular servers.

OneNote 2007 is pretty cool. It's sort of fits in with the legal pad

Apologies if this is slightly off topic, but I'm happy to re-post elsewhere.

A client wants to be able to create some draft page layouts that they
want achieved. Basically, they want a simple piece of software that they
can use to drag & drop things like buttons, lists, input fields etc onto
a page in order to create an initial draft requirement. No functionality
is needed - just the ability to create a draft layout and annotate
things. For example there might be an arrow pointing to a button with a
note that says 'the user clicks this to display a list of products'

They can then submit it to us as a starting point.

I hesitate to suggest anything like Dreamweaver. Does anyone know of
anything fairly lightweight and foolproof?

Thanks,

Nick

I got the same delay already mentioned on the over state of the graphic
buttons and I'm on cable (IE/WinXP - SP2/1024x768). I haven't looked at the
code, am more of hobbyist/student/lurker on this list. I guess my comments
are from the pov of the visitor. Hope they help. An expectation -- when I
clicked on About, I expected to see info About the organization, as I had
already read about the service on the intro page. I learned nothing new
about the organization on that particular page, though there were 2 more
pages linked there about staff and partners -- perhaps that's enough though.
I wonder, since the text on that About page summarizes what is on the intro
page if it would work better as the intro page, It would also possibly fit
and the visitor would not have to scroll to read the rest. But just a
thought...

Hi Everyone,
A new site I recently developed the front-end for over the past few
months, called Edentiti [1], has just officially launched and I wanted to
get some feedback about the usability, accessibility and over functionality
in whatever browsers you can get your hands on. I've tested in various
Windows and Mac browsers during development, but as is always the case, bugs
tend to sneak in wherever they can and something may have been missed.

(I know there are bugs in IE7, but I'd rather wait till MS actually release
something that isn't a joke like both betas 1 and 2 were before I bother
testing/fixing with it - the one to be released after Mix '06 looks slightly
more promising)

For all you DOM Scripting fans, if you go to step 2 of the Create an
Edentiti section, there's a funky form validation script you might want to
check out.
http://edentiti.com/create/ (click next, to get to step 2)

[1] http://edentiti.com/

PS. I know the markup is currently XHTML and I'm aware how much of a
hypocrite that makes me :-), but, given the time constraints, it was a
limitation of the back end solution we had to accept, with plans to convert
it to HTML4 later on.

Both slicing suggestions seem valid, and which is most suitable will have to

If the problem you're having seems to be the page Imageready generates, then
you only need to change the code on the generated page it seems. Use the
guides that you pull out from the rulers, then you can slice with the
slicing tool. At least the generated page will give you the x y placement
info that you can edit to your liking. Just a thought...

I’m looking for a an easy to

It has to be able to be used by

The alternative I guess is to bend

RE: [WSG] Best way to train someone in css and web standards

2005-05-23 Thread ByteDreams

I keep a list of online tutorials at my msn group site, http://groups.msn.com/htmlwebdesigndreamers/
and try to keep it as up to date as possible.  You will see "CSS Tutorials
in the lefthand nav bar of the group.  There you will find tuts and
articles from  beginners to advance that I've scoped the 'net for.  I
like Ben's idea too, and will try that for myself.  I wonder if a person
that only has html knowledge will be able to learn CSS using this method
alone though.

wsg@webstandardsgroup.orgSubject: [WSG] Best way to train someone in
css and web standards

Hello All -

I have the opportunity to hire two people in the next few
weeks to help me with my one-man-band web development business.

Problem is, these two know only the most basic aspects of HTML
and don't know anything about CSS or web standards.

Problem also is that I can't afford to hire anyone currently
proficient at these two disciplines.

Learning CSS was a painfully slow process for me (as I never
had time to concentrate on it, or standards coding, because I was always doing
everything else as well). To this day, I still wouldn't consider
myself anywhere near expert level: The moans and groans and "geez, why did
that happen" is pretty much behind me, but I'm no expert.

Since I'll still be too busy to sit with them for hours at a
time teaching them the little that I know, I'd like to have some opinions on the
best way to bring two absolute newbies up to CSS/Web Standards proficiency
without me having to be at their elbow every step along the way.

By proficiency, I mean that I can give them a Photoshop design
comp, and they will be able to create an XHTML code foundation as well
as a CSS style and positioning spec without too much whining and
head-scratching.

My plan is to get them completely compeletely
trained in these areas before letting them dive into any real project
development.

All comments welcome and greatly appreciated.

Cole

Hi

Some of you may have come across the web-standards antics of
"WebStandardsMan" on various internet forums and newsgroups.

Just FYI, yes... that's me

I was wondering if there were any comic-book artists, or anyone with a
talent with DC/Marvel style illustration who's prepared to spend some time
working with me on a one-off comic book (distributed on the 'net) focused on
web-standards and the adventures of the fictional character as he battles
the evils of tabular layout and non-semantic-ism.

Any takers? :)

not sure which 1 ur talking bout but
communitymx.com showed how to do it this week
Recreating Macromedia's LayoutMacromedia's current web site layout
contains two effects that are very popular today: equal-height columns and
rounded corners on columns and boxes. When these two effects are combined, it
creates a slick and impressive looking web site. Although there are numerous
articles out there describing how to achieve both of these effects in CSS, there
is not much written about how to achieve both of them in conjunction.
Surprisingly, the effect can be quite simple to achieve, as our deconstruction
of Macromedia's site will reveal. We'll show you how they achieve this layout
feat, then describe an alternative way to produce the rounded corner effect that
is more streamlined.

I have, but they have been when working

Here's a few people who do actually work
in this area, tendering for and delivering WAI sites for Government.  Try
contacting them directly.  I'm sure they would be willing to help.

Hey there crew,

I'm putting in a tender for some government work and one of the
requirements is some successful WAI sites that I've been involved in.

I've actually not been involved in a single one and I think this
requirement is a little stringent. Has anyone out there been involved in a
successful example?

It doesn't have to be Australian even... I just need some examples (or
lack of) so I can point out to them that the requirement is a little harsh.

A bientot,

Nice Kyle. But I was just wondering, when you click on a link on that menu,
the bullets flash off and on real quick -- is that intentional?

RE: [WSG] iFrames vs Scrolling Divs

I find that very interesting, Bert. Never knew the object tag could be used
in such a fashion.

I love this list!

G'day

iFrame is valid XHTML 1 Transitional (and Frameset) but it is not available
in the Strict DTD (and probably won't be available in future recommendations
of XHTML). To embed a document in Strict, use the object element.
Something like:

See www.w3.org/TR/html401/present/frames.html#edef-IFRAME
And www.w3.org/TR/html401/struct/objects.html#edef-OBJECT

I do recall reading somewhere that it's possible to link a div to an
external source (it used an attribute like "data" or "src") but I think it
was a Netscape-ism.

Toying with some Content management systems like phpNuke once, I think the

Subject: [WSG] A discussion leads to an idea - Dynamic CSS!

I met with a programmer today to actually discuss the idea of a Portland,
Oregon based WSG - he likes the idea and will talk to others about the idea.

However, during our ongoing 3 hour conversation over a few pints, the
discussion eventually moved from WSG to web design and then to experimental
design.

Then an interesting idea hit the table, what is to prevent a person from
creating a dynamic stylesheet.

Has anyone ever toyed with this idea before and if so what were the
results???

Ok, I'm a full-time student, and as such, I'm full-time broke :(
I'm VERY keen to attend this seminar, and I'm wondering if any other
students want to band together and try for some kind of "group discount"?
Email me if you're interested...

Can anyone point me in the direction of decent MT reference material?
Tutorials, tips etc.

I'm just playing with the application for the first time, looks like I'm in

Don’t know if this will help you – I’m new
to web standards stuff, but Project VII makes extensions for Dreamweaver, and
one of them animates layers.  I think the extension is free. What I don’t know
is if the _javascript_, for which this extension produces is also considered
accessible or within web standards…

The extension can be found on Macromedia
Exchange site.

FW: [WSG] Purpose of this mailing list

2004-03-09 Thread ByteDreams

I recently joined, about uh,... Yesterday.
Couldn't have picked a better time to bring up this subject. I'm neither a
beginner, nor an expert, and I did join it to learn about web standards,
and appreciate it when I can learn something else, something more. So I
guess I'll be one of those people that contribute little, while I catch up
to the rest of you.

Subject: RE: [WSG] Purpose of this mailing list

Hi Mike

The purpose of this list is two fold: Q&A stuff and general web standards
discussion/news updates. We have tried to create a culture on this list
that is very topic based rather than creating a really chatty community
with lots of OT posts about what people got up to on the weekend.

So basically we want this list to contain anything and everything as long
as its on topic.

I realise that there are other CSS Q&A lists out there, but this list is
different in the sense that it is really the extension of a group and the
group's meetings. I would say that at the moment the membership of the
list these days far exceeds the attendance of our meetings, but the list
has evolved out of the group & group meetings.

People who can't make it to meetings are always welcomed & encouraged to
organise meetings in their areas.

We are very aware of list volume issues and understand that this is a
touchy subject for some, but at the same time getting too restrictive will
alienate other list members.

I've got a graphic artist in here who has similar complaints to yours - he
finds Russ's emails with lists of links very interesting because they give
him a good idea of issues that he has to design around and techniques that
we can be employing. But he doesn't code CSS all day so he doesn't really
get much from the "how do I get this float working" posts.

What would you think about a blog & RSS feed for news stuff (or would this
just be "another CSS blog")? Or two lists, one for news and one for
implementation issues?

Anyway its an open issue at the moment - we're still trying to find the
right mix.

Cheers

Mark
