Look at all that onmouseout/rollover - there's an image border or two

SEO-wise you could only implement this on the homepage, otherwise
you would

I would keep them separate and have the alt text on the logo as your
company

I used to use a div with text in it for the logo, then css to add a
background image and text indent to move the text off-screen. I
changed back

to an img tag as the alt text is more powerful for SEO purposes.

While that is possible, unfortunately the h1 text doesn't display when

[WSG] Dropmenu accessibility and layout problem IE6

2008-12-12 Thread Henrik Madsen

Seeking input and layout assistance (IE6, what else).

I am considering using a Son of Suckerfish dropmenu for one item in my
main nav bar.

It is accessible to screenreaders but how - if it's even possible –
can it be made keyboard accessible?

For example, tab to the item in the menu > hit another key(?) to open
the dropmenu > tab to chosen submenu item > hit enter.

http://htmldog.com/articles/suckerfish/dropdowns/

Or is it wiser to forget the dropmenu approach altogether and have an
intermediary page offering the submenu choices?

Here is the page in development. See under 'Services'

http://members.iinet.com.au/~generator/chem/index-new.php

I work on a Mac and everything looks and functions perfectly in 5
different browsers. A colleague with IE7 has reported same. However,
the layout is screwed in IE6:

http://members.iinet.com.au/~generator/chem/grab.jpg

Notice the dropmenu pushes content below it downwards and other menu
items to the right. There also appears to be a problem with outer
margins of the main content (which I do not see via browsershots.org).

I have included the relevant css and js (both external files) below.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

TIA,

Henrik

The menu is in a div with this css:

#menu {
height: 24px;
width: 840px;
margin-left: 30px;
border-bottom: solid #636467 1px;
float: left;
margin-bottom: 30px;
display: inline;
}

The other css for the menu is:

#nav, #nav ul {
list-style: none;
padding: 0;
margin: 0;
line-height: 1;
}
#nav a {
display: block;
color: #636467;

padding-bottom: 8px;

#nav a:hover {
color: #E96D1F;

#nav li ul {
position: absolute;

padding-top: 6px;
padding-bottom: -2px;
width: 162px;

Re: [WSG] Site Review: www.ItsAllaboutYou-studio.com

2009-01-10 Thread Henrik Madsen

Hi Jim,

A couple of cents from downunder (in FF3, Camino, Safari / Mac).

1) The main horizontal menu bar breaks thru the blue border on the
right

2) Maybe the drop menu would look better with a matching background
image on the main category, rather than a solid blue block

3) I'd have contact us link / details prominent

4) Suggest font size is decreased and leading increased

5) Increase padding around footer content

6) Link text colour is a bit 'electric' blue (and the green, on
hover, doesn't seem to associate with any other colour on the site)

7) What's that little globe about?

8) Purely personal view: everything looks a bit 'tabloid' busy and
cluttered, which to me is kind of juxtaposed with the yoga vibe. 1)
above should help to open up the layout but perhaps less use of bold
(potentially even a font change to something less cold) will deliver a
purer, classier, more whitespace, overall feel?

Like I said, my 2c.

above should help to open up the layout but perhaps less use of bold

a purer, classier, more whitespace, overall feel?

Like I said, my 2c.

[WSG] CSS IE6/7 - what a surprise

2009-01-23 Thread Henrik Madsen

HI all,

I'm hoping there's a simple solution to my two problems.

All looks fine in Mac browsers x5 and IE8b2 (according to netrenderer)
but not in:

IE6 - Mysterious margins are appearing between the header and the top
menu and in both coloured boxes in the right hand column of the main
content.

IE6+7 - the coloured boxes are not 'expanding' to contain the content
(in this case a floated image in both)

I found this CSS as an alternative to a clearing div and it seems to
fix things in other browsers - except those IE's:

#NameofContainingDiv:after {
clear: both;
content: ".";
display: block;
height: 0px;
visibility: hidden;
}

Would anyone be able to have a look?

Here's the link:

Any other thoughts, comments, suggestions - always appreciated.

2009-01-23 Thread Henrik Madsen

Thanks for your replies.

Non-expanding div issue

I removed the :after stuff altogether (which initially broke the
layout in Mac browsers)

This fixed IE7:

*:first-child+html .catalogueMid, *:first-child+html .subscribeMid
{ overflow: hidden; }

Adding the following styles to the containing divs fixed IE6:

overflow: hidden;
zoom: 1;

And all seems fine in Mac browsers too now :s

IE6 mysterious gaps / margins

Remains unsolved. See between the header and the top menu and at the
top of the two coloured boxes in the RH column of the main content ???

[WSG] Accessibility testing

2009-02-10 Thread Henrik Madsen

Hi all,

I'm wrapping up a Government agency website.

They have reams of design and usability standards. Some pretty
pointless; others very valid - but no problem.

Re. accessibility, they use ACTF aDesigner.

http://www.eclipse.org/actf/downloads/tools/aDesigner/index.php

And "our scores against WCAG v1.0 Level A" could apparently be
improved. They have provided scores for star rating, compliance,
navigability and listenability.

Now, here's the thing. This software is only for PC. I'm Mac. Not very
accessible eh? :)

What similar software / online systems do people use and get reliable
results (if reliable results are indeed attainable)?

TIA.

switching off your speakers.

So, imo the most unobtrusive way would be to have an option to play

Best of luck in dissuading them. What I would do is show them the 10
most successful sites on the internet. Then show them a graph of the
number of the top 10 that play "background music". Even the top 10
sites in their own area of business. That might bring them to their

Hi all,

I apologise if this is off-topic, but I'd really appreciate some
advice.

I have clients who insist they want background music on their Web
site. I've tried to dissuade them, but without success. What is
the most acceptable/least intrusive method of doing this? UK
licensing requirements differ depending on whether the music is
downloadable or not, so I need to sort out the method in order to
advise them on the licences. I'm still hoping the complexities of
the licensing system will succeed where I've failed and put them
off the whole notion, but in case not, I'd be most grateful for
some input here.

Thank you.

I've just implemented a dropdown menu of this sort, and ran into
some IE6 and IE7 bugs using the "sons of suckerfish" approach. What
worked for me was "Sons of Ursidae" method, http://css-class.com/articles/ursidae/

One gotcha: Note that if the dropdown menu overlaps with a
element, in IE6 the will bleed through the dropdown menu.
My project was already using the jQuery library, so we used a plugin
called jquery.bgiframe.js to insert an iframe 'shim', and then used
conditional comments to serve this JavaScript only to IE6. I'm sure
that this approach can be adapted to work without the library
dependency.

Also, sometimes a scripted method might work best. For example, you

The exact solution depends on the exact problem.

How about the "exact problem" being the one that image maps were
*designed* to solve? Allowing arbitrary shapes within an image to
be linked to different content? As in the US state example?

Re: [WSG] images against color backgrounds

.png with alpha channel is the best way to go.

IE6 and lower can't handle the alpha channel and make the
transparent background gray.

Can be conditionally fixed with js, for example:
http://www.dillerdesign.com/experiment/DD_belatedPNG/

Based on my site audience I'll make fallback .gif replacements for
the .png images (that look crappier but are at least transparent)

You can also make 8 bit .pngs (with no alpha channel) that behave
just like .gif

I can't tell it's a nokia web browser or a framework, or both.

Thought?

Thanks!

Re: [WSG] Combining media stylesheets - best practice

Hi everyone,
On a recent project we've decided to combine our @print media styles
at the bottom of our main stylesheet. eg.

@media print { /* Print styles */}

In our global template, the stylesheet is imported with the media
attribute "screen". Using this attribute, the print styles are
ignored.

The following markup options offer a solution to the problem:

1.
2.

I guess the question I have is whether there are any caveats with
either method, and if there is a best practice solution?

The doc type is XHTML 1.0 Transitional if this is relevant.

Kind regards,
Ben Zeller

There is nothing urgent. No one else to call. Nothing to see here.
