Re: [WSG] IE7 Issues - The Final Three
Hi Cole, Bug no. 1 You may need to re-think the mark-up a little. Check this article http://brenelz.com/blog/squish-the-internet-explorer-z-index-bug/ Bug no. 2 add this to your current stylesheet to trigger hasLayout for that element. html #formNav {height: 1%;} If you have a specific IE stylesheet then: #formNav {height: 1%;} Hope this helps. Sean On Sat, Sep 24, 2011 at 1:46 PM, Cole Kuryakin c...@koisis.com wrote: Hello All - After more than a day I've been able to successfully quash all ie7 issues except for three. I'm hoping that someone can guide me to a solution for these remaining problems. This is as it's suppose to be. In IE7, however, the rule is ABOVE the geko. Z-index issues are well documented for IE7 but try as I might - using all of the documentation I've read on IE7-z - I can't get this hr to go beneath the Geko. POSITIONED WRAPPER EFFECT, COPYRIGHT LINE AND FOOTER NAV Again, if you look at the bottom of the home page (above) in FF, IE8 or IE9 you'll see a graphical wrapper effect (visually defining the bottom of the wrapper div) as well as a copyright line and footer nav UL. This is how it's suppose to look. In IE7 however, all three elements vanish. Hours and hours of research and css/structure re-writing have not gotten me anywhere. MYSTERY PADDING/MARGIN (WHATEVER) on LI button I've got two rectangular buttons (cancel and submit) on the contact page (http://www.koisis.com/index.php?cmd=01.09.00.01lac=en-us). In FF these buttons look as it should. In IE7 however, neither buttons are in alignment. The Cancel button is an LI, the Submit button is a form input button. Again, hours of searching and css tweaking have resulted in nothing more than additional hair-loss. If anyone can suggest ways to one or more of these issues in IE7 i'd be hugely grateful. These are not emulators - in both cases you are remotely controlling real phones. The theory is great but in practice both services are painful to use for all kinds of reasons including: 1. There is a significant delay between pressing a button and seeing anything change. 2. The display takes a while to update, which makes it difficult to control dynamic content and watch video. 3. Sometimes we could not work out how to interact with the phones. For instance one phone was locked and it took ten minutes to figure out the combination of keypresses (of unlabelled buttons) that was required to unlock it. If you are not already familiar with the phone you are controlling, this is a significant issue. 4. On several phones we were able to open a browser but could not work out how to enter a URL. The smartphones mostly support touch, so you can interact using a mouse, but you can't do that on the more basic phones. The support information is poor on both websites. 5. Security is a concern because we are often working under NDA for major brands on highly secret product releases. Perfecto Mobile simply say that anything you do might be seen by other people, so don't do anything you wouldn't want made public. Device Anywhere claim that each session is private and that they have some sort of cleaning process before the next person uses the phone. However, on one occasion I could see everything that someone else was doing (in real time as they were doing it) and I could not control the phone. Somehow our sessions had got mixed up, which gave me no confidence in their security. 6. Overall it takes much longer to perform any given task - typically 3 to 10 times longer than you could do the task using a desktop browser. Even typing URLs was taking a couple of minutes (they typically contained 50 characters or so), so we had to use a URL shortening service to speed that up. Good luck and let us know if you find a better service. I'd be interested to know how many people actually responded to those polls... I mean, they didn't ask *me*... I didn't even know about it. For much of the early 90's I used to write coding standards for a living and conduct code audits. Folks got very religious about brace styles, indentation and naming convention - three of the least important aspects of a good coding standard (in my opinion). Consistency is the only defensible position for those subjects. As for the other stuff, they were happy to be advised what to do (I'm talking about guidelines for complexity, cohesion, coupling, coding for maintenance...). Anyway, it's interesting to know that people actually do care about brace style in the CSS world! :) Sean A Corfield -- http://www.corfield.org/blog/ The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Re: [WSG] reply to Safari question

The debug menu is extremely useful: it can pretend to be a bunch of different browsers, it has a basic load test engine built in, it can show the DOM tree... After my frustrations I use Mozilla firebird. That's good too. I use it as my second browser for those few reticent sites that just don't know a standard when it bites them on the nose (e.g., Microsoft Exchange WebMail). I just don't like the UI as much. This means that when you develop for a company, you can do their profile on the browser. ... just imagine how stoked they would be with their corporate Branding running all browsers on their network. Maybe times have changed but that never seemed to appeal to any company I've ever dealt with... :) Regards, Sean * The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ *
