Re: [WSG] Introduction and first submission

2006-02-24 Thread sharron
I don't know, ignorance I could claim. Was unaware that this site or list
even existed until doing a wee bit on investigating.

I'm so glad I happened across you'all (Texas talk) however. Smile

I belong to another forum with some great folks who have helped me
tremendously in the past year to get past and move into the surreal realm
of CSS and Validation etc.

It took me quite a bit to absorb the concept! Now it appears that I have
been labeled the compliance stickler on that forum. I am often asked why,
my response in Because I can.

My site (personal) serves as my testing grounds. My pet peeve is, stuff not
validatinggo figure. I love the FF Web Developers tool bar and
the tidy addon, whatever it is called! Great tool! That way I get to see
which sites validate and which do not. (giggle, even standards sites show if
not errors, warnings).

PetPeeve:
I wanted a guestbook, found one, installed it, then found out the darned old
php code was fraught with invalidations. Not knowing a thing about php, I
crossed my fingers, jumped in and fixed it! Took me days and days. I made
several mistakes!

My question is this, why oh why can't one who knows how to do those things,
build them to validate before they release them for public consumption?

How darn hard is it to specify the php to write out alt tags for images, or
table summaries in tables and so on? Excuse me whilst I growl,
grr.

So in short, I am glad to be here, where I am not only folk, to whom it
matters.

Onward and upwards!

Now if someone or the WC3 would find a valid alternative for the Onresize
attribute! I would be a happy camper. BIG SMILE

I don't know how to get smiles in an email, forgive me.

Sharron

Thank you for your kind welcome. I am excited about
learning more. I wish there were more minutes in a day so I could absorb all
that I can. I am quite afraid that I am more limited by my brain cells, then
time constraints though.

Paul, I am not all that far from you, Waco area. I
see from the site itself there is a member actually in Waco.

I sure hope that I can capture the way these
notices or emails work, it is a bit daunting for a newbie.
I have setup new rules, in outlook hoping to
download all messages from WSG into one folder, but have yet to manage to catch
but a few! Now that I have posted from my site email address, I am getting these
emails, in my inbox, my site folder, and the folder I had initially set up to
receive them!

I am looking forward to more participation here,
but I fear that I don't have much to offer. I am sure I will be able to offer up
a css challenge once in awhile. But then again, most here seem to have a firm
grasp on everything!

As for the question what is this...SXSW?

Wow I've never quite had to answer this to another Texan. Try this link
http://2006.sxsw.com/interactive/

SXSW started as a music only festival back in the 1980s. The Film and
Interactive (that's us web
and UI folks) came later in the 1990s. It's a 4-day get together were we attend
panels to hear
about thing people are doing. Sort of a trade show but not for any one vendor.
Last year the
keynote speakers were Jeffry Zeldman (in person) and Malcom Gladwell (Tipping
point and Blink
author). Also in attendance were Eric Meyer, Doug Bowman, Andy Budd, Jerremy
Keith. The folks from
down under from WestCiv who make an excellent CSS tool, Style Master. Sorry for
the name dropping
there.

Anyway it's really a lot of fun.

As promised. For those in and around Austin the Austin WSG group used to be on
Meetup.com. Then
the jerks wanted to start charging. So James Craig, the moderator, moved the
list to Yahoo
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AustinWSM/ Seems they still have monthly meetup.
Maybe some folks
from this list can all plan on attending a meeting.
