I also had crashes on FT4 all the way out and had to restart the program. I
got a message about invalid header in the log. I wish I had written down
exactly what it said. Eventually it would not read the log at all so all of
my contacts showed as not being previously worked.

I have experienced times when no RF is produced when transmit is called
for. This has been caused by no audio coming from the computer. Normally
though, audio is present on the next transmit.

Gentlemen:
Bandwidth and weak signal performance are important considerations when
comparing the relative merits of FT8 and FT4. Perhaps an even more
important consideration is which of these is the most fun to operate.
I have been using FT4 since the release of 2.1.0 and find that I like it a
I made a couple of FT4 contacts this morning on 7.047500 MHz. It seems to
me that this frequency should work well. W1AW broadcasts will not interfere
with FT4 since we will be zero beating with them. FT4 signals will begin
about 500 Hz above W1AW so a good modern receiver should be able to tune
I have had the problem of the Decode button not coming on after the end of
a receive interval. In my case I found the problem to be that the computer
was being overloaded by high CPU usage of a web browser. This occurred with
Edge, Chrome, or Firefox. This high CPU usage was seen by Task Manager.

Thanks for the education. Before you started discussing the ALL.TXT file I
did not know it existed. So I decided to check it out and see what it was
all about. Here are some things that I found out about it in my case.
The file in my computer was nearly 24 MB in size. I double clicked on it
and
For what it's worth, I have a different view of how ALC works.
First of all, I don't think that properly implemented ALC causes more than
a trivial amount of distortion in the signal.
Audio processors in studio sound boards and in commercial radio stations
use it routinely. It has the benefit of
I have experienced this behavior also.
I initially ran FT8 on a old HP 32-bit Pentium computer running Windows 10
and there would be spells where there was a waterfall but Decode would not
light up. Then I noticed that this only seemed to happen when Microsoft
Edge was also running. I used Task
With 1.9.1 I saw a range of +/- 0.2-s. With rc5 I am seeing 0 to +0.35 and
no -. I understand that this is caused by a bug that will be fixed when
2.0.0 is released.

A 2-KHz shift is good because it allows overlap between segments. If 3 KHz
was used there could be spectrum in between segments that would not be
reachable.

Everything worked well for me. I had a lot of decodes and contacts. My best
DX was Finland. The key commands of shift + F12 and shift +F11 to move the
xmt freq up or down 60 Hz was very handy. And being able to extend the
bandwidth using ctrl + shift + F12 by 2 KHz was great. I made most of my
Now that the cat is out of the bag and FT8 has begun to use dial
frequencies other than xx.074, when will it be permissible to move up 2KHz
when 20 or 40 meters is very busy and overcrowded?

I view myself as being a pioneer with RC4 and don't expect that there will
be many stations using it now, but that the number using it will gradually
increase over time. As Joe said, there is going to be confusion for a
while. A great many hams will not even know that RC4 exists. I would not
