Hello Dave,
Are you talking about this change below? If so, this has no material
improvements to the AX25 stack other than to improve cross-platform
compiling.

I noticed a year or so back (maybe longer) that aprx fell foul of a
kernel change which resulted in shorter packets not being sent and the

To put this into the simplest terms possible (I'm really good at simple
thinking!):
If AX.25 has kernel networking support we can often treat it like an ethernet

Hello Max,
Why does ax.25 need to be in the kernel? What am I installing when I do apt-get
install ax25? What about the millions of users that don't use ax.25, doesn't
that just make the kernel a little larger for them without any benefits? Help
me understand this as I'd really like to

Hey Tom, Everyone,
I would appreciate it if *everyone* on the list who uses AX.25 networking
routinely would test out this code --- it impacts *everyone* who uses AX.25
networking in Xastir.
The Ax.25 stack in the Linux kernel is falling apart and there have been

I appreciate the need for testing, and perhaps
in it, too, that would be a good thing to comment on.

Finally figured this out. Ubuntu has an older version of ax25-[utils | apps]
and libax25. Not sure why it should have made a difference, since it seemed to
be kernel-level, but removing Ubuntu's version and using my own compiled
version seems to have fixed it.

Hey all -
I've got a very strange problem with my ax25 setup on Ubuntu. Google
searches have proved fruitless, so I'm hoping someone here has some
tips.
I had a working setup and was running xastir over the ax25 port just
fine. I'm using a tnc-x through a USB to serial dongle. But now, the
It sounds like you are using a laptop (or lug some very large computer with
you on vacationG).
Check the BIOS power settings to make sure that they aren't disabling the
USB port to save battery.

I'll check, but the laptop is plugged in just like it was at home. There's also
nothing in the syslog about the converter being disconnected.

Hi All,
I'm trying to set up Xastir on an Eee 1000 that is running Xandros
(Debian). I have followed the instructions on
http://www.xastir.org/wiki/HowTo:SoundModem exactly, but am receiving an
error when I run soundmodem:

I often see instructions that mention two different options to perform
various tasks. One involves ax.25. Is there a preferred method? Is
there an advantage to using ax.25? Are there limitations wrt the tnc or
modem one uses?
Can someone point me to a discussion on the differences?
ax.25 pretty much *is* packet radio.
What you see I suspect is the options for what/how is performing as
your interface.
You can use a hardware TNC, you can use a hardware TNC in KISS mode,
you can use soundcard modems, you can use userspace soundcard
software, kernel based ax.25, AGWPE

On my ubuntu karmic 9.10 system, I didn't add anything at all for the
modules, it just worked. If it didn't just work I would have though.
I have the ax25, mkiss modules loaded, not sure that I have tested
soundmodem on that system as I use a real tnc.
