Thanks, yes, it's interesting, but it demands contiguous id space for all
tasks/docker containers. We are wondering how to distribute the ids among
the tasks(do all tasks get the same range? Do all of them get separate
ranges? Do all tasks belonging to the same job get the same range?)

[~zhiguohong]
Thanks for sending it.
Please use the trunk/branch-2 version and run Docker containers using LCE. this
bug is fixed there.

 docker container is still running when app is killed

 Key: YARN-4016
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/YARN-4016
 Project: Hadoop YARN
  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: nodemanager
Reporter: Hong Zhiguo
Assignee: Hong Zhiguo

 The docker_container_executor_session.sh is generated like below:
 {code}
 ### get the pid of docker container by docker inspect
 echo `/usr/bin/docker inspect --format {{.State.Pid}}
 container_1438681002528_0001_01_02`
 .../container_1438681002528_0001_01_02.pid.tmp
 ### rename *.pid.tmp to *.pid
 /bin/mv -f .../container_1438681002528_0001_01_02.pid.tmp
 .../container_1438681002528_0001_01_02.pid
 ### launch the docker container
 /usr/bin/docker run  --rm  --net=host --name
 container_1438681002528_0001_01_02 -v ... library/mysql
 /container_1438681002528_0001_01_02/launch_container.sh
 {code}
 This is obviously wrong because you can not get the pid of a docker container
 before starting it. When NodeManager try to kill the container, pid zero is
 always read from the pid file.

 4-layer topology (with NodeGroup layer) implementation of Container

 YARN-19-v3-alpha.patch, YARN-19-v4.patch, YARN-19.patch

 There are several classes in YARN’s container assignment and task scheduling
 algorithms that related to data locality which were updated to give
 preference to running a container on the same nodegroup. This section
 summarized the changes in the patch that provides a new implementation to
 support a four-layer hierarchy.
 When the ApplicationMaster makes a resource allocation request to the
 scheduler of ResourceManager, it will add the node group to the list of
 attributes in the ResourceRequest. The parameters of the resource request
 will change from priority, (host, rack, *), memory, #containers to
 priority, (host, nodegroup, rack, *), memory, #containers.
 After receiving the ResoureRequest the RM scheduler will assign containers
 for requests in the sequence of data-local, nodegroup-local, rack-local and
 off-switch.Then, ApplicationMaster schedules tasks on allocated containers in
 sequence of data- local, nodegroup-local, rack-local and off-switch.
 In terms of code changes made to YARN task scheduling, we updated the class
 ContainerRequestEvent so that applications can requests for containers can
 include anodegroup. In RM schedulers, FifoScheduler and CapacityScheduler
 were updated. For the FifoScheduler, the changes were in the method
 assignContainers. For the Capacity Scheduler the method
 assignContainersOnNode in the class of LeafQueue was updated. In both changes
 a new method, assignNodeGroupLocalContainers() was added in between the
 assignment data-local and rack-local.

 It will save some time by handling event CLEANUP_CONTAINER asynchronously.
 This improvement will be useful for cases that cleaning up container cost a
 little long time(e.g. for our case: we are running Docker container on NM, it
 will take above 1 seconds to clean up one docker container. ) and many
 containers to clean up(e.g. NM need clean up all running containers when NM
 shutdown).

I agree with [~vinodkv]. Both Jiras have the same objective, and I am fine with
either.
I like the proposal in this Jira, because it makes Docker a first class citizen
of Hadoop. However, I'm fine with keeping it in DefaultContainerExecutor also
if merging this into LCE slows the whole process down.
Also, network and disk resource management is new in LCE, so we should not make
those a blocker for Docker integration.
My main concern across all Docker issues is that are we making incremental
progress. We have alpha, and we should make incremental progress towards beta.

 Support Docker Containers In LinuxContainerExecutor

 Support Docker Containers In LinuxContainerExecutor
 LinuxContainerExecutor provides useful functionality today with respect to
 localization, cgroups based resource management and isolation for CPU,
 network, disk etc. as well as security with a well-defined mechanism to
 execute privileged operations using the container-executor utility. Bringing
 docker support to LinuxContainerExecutor lets us use all of this
 functionality when running docker containers under YARN, while not requiring
 users and admins to configure and use a different ContainerExecutor.
 There are several aspects here that need to be worked through :
 * Mechanism(s) to let clients request docker-specific functionality - we
 could initially implement this via environment variables without impacting
 the client API.
 * Security - both docker daemon as well as application
 * Docker image localization
 * Running a docker container via container-executor as a specified user
 * “Isolate” the docker container in terms of CPU/network/disk/etc
 * Communicating with and/or signaling the running container (ensure correct
 pid handling)
 * Figure out workarounds for certain performance-sensitive scenarios like
 HDFS short-circuit reads
 * All of these need to be achieved without changing the current behavior of
 LinuxContainerExecutor

 This allows the yarn administrator to add a cluster-wide default docker image

 this features, it would be convenient for newer applications like slider to
 launch inside a cluster-default docker container.

 The DockerContainerExecutor use docker inspect before docker run, so the
 docker inspect couldn't get the right pid for the docker, signalContainer()
 and nm restart would fail.

[~beckham007] Thanks for your comment.
So you're saying that if I send a signal to the pid of the session script(as
DefaultContainerExecutor does), it will work on the process that docker is
running, and potentially kill it?

Please help me clarify my understanding:
I am running the following steps:
First I create a file similar to the session script. It writes the pid of the
session to a pidfile
{code}
$cat  bash_session_pid.sh EOF
 #!/bin/bash
 echo $$  /tmp/pidfile
 exec setsid bash -c 'docker run -itd ubuntu sleep infinity'
 EOF
{code}

I chmod and run this script which starts a docker container
{code}
$chmod a+x bash_session_pid.sh
$./bash_session_pid.sh
$docker ps
1b8ee377e3d2ubuntu:14.04sleep infinity3 minutes ago
Up 3 minutescranky_stallman
{code}

Now I cat the pid of the session, and it says the pid is 9281
{code}
$cat /tmp/pidfile
9281
{code}

As you've suggested, I send a kill signal to the pid, hoping that'd kill the
container
{code}
$kill -9 9281
{code}
I check if the docker container is killed:
{code}
$docker ps
1b8ee377e3d2ubuntu:14.04sleep infinity6 minutes ago
Up 6 minutescranky_stallman
{code}

Since your method did not kill the container, I get the pid of the process
running under the container:
{code}
$docker inspect 1b8ee377e3d2
9289
{code}
I check the tree of this process:
{code}
$pstree -ps 9289
init(1)---docker(6512)---sleep(9289)
{code}

As I had expected, this process is a child of the docker daemon, and therefore,
if it's killed, the container will be killed. Therefore, I send a kill signal
to this pid:
{code}
$kill -9 9289
{code}

Now I verify if the container is alive:
{code}
$docker ps
{code}
Container is dead.
From what I understand, the session pid has no relation to the actual pid of
the container, and therefore, sending it signal is meaningless.
Therefore, if that meaningless pid is in the pidfile,
NodeManager/ResourceManager will not be able to send signal to containers as
needed.
Please let me know where my understanding is mistaken, and I gladly will switch
it to the simpler implementation.

[~chengzhendong888], you are implying that the pidfile in future will never be
used for anything else? Container Executors are required to provide a correct
pidfile, and that's the api contract between them and the NodeManager. I don't
see why DockerContainerExecutor should violate that contract.

Also, how would you derive a containerId from a pid in the NM? The pid that
will be sent to signal container won't even be the correct pid(it will be the
session script pid).

[~chenchun], Also, other threads in the NM may depend on the actual PID of the
launched JVM, and I'm not going to preclude any future processes from depending
upon this. The pidfile is supposed to be populated right after the container is
launched, not after the process has finished. The DockerContainerExecutor will
not alter these fundamental api and expectations of the NM from a container
executor. Therefore, getting the actual PID from docker inspect is the most
accurate and recommended way.

And how will you derive the container is from pid? By querying all

 The DockerContainerExecutor use docker inspect before docker run, so the
 docker inspect couldn't get the right pid for the docker, signalContainer()
 and nm restart would fail.

[jira] [Commented] (YARN-3282) DockerContainerExecutor should support environment variables setting

[~guoleitao], Can you not include everything you need inside the docker image?
That's the premise of the docker container executor. It assumes that the user
will provide a docker image that is self-sufficient and is not dependent on the
nodemanager for any files or directories.

 DockerContainerExecutor should support environment variables setting

 Key: YARN-3282
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/YARN-3282
 Project: Hadoop YARN
  Issue Type: Improvement
  Components: applications, nodemanager
Affects Versions: 2.6.0
Reporter: Leitao Guo
 Attachments: YARN-3282.01.patch

 Currently, DockerContainerExecutor will mount yarn.nodemanager.local-dirs
 and yarn.nodemanager.log-dirs to containers automatically. However
 applications maybe need set more environment variables before launching
 containers.
 In our applications, just as the following command, we need to attach several
 directories and set some environment variables to docker containers.
 {code}
 docker run -i -t -v /data/transcode:/data/tmp -v /etc/qcs:/etc/qcs -v
 /mnt:/mnt -e VTC_MQTYPE=rabbitmq -e VTC_APP=ugc -e VTC_LOCATION=sh -e
 VTC_RUNTIME=vtc sequenceiq/hadoop-docker:2.6.0 /bin/bash
 {code}

 Umbrella issue for Yarn launched Docker Containers
 --

 Key: YARN-2466
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/YARN-2466
 Project: Hadoop YARN
  Issue Type: New Feature
Affects Versions: 2.4.1
Reporter: Abin Shahab
Assignee: Abin Shahab

 Docker (https://www.docker.io/) is, increasingly, a very popular container
 technology.
 In context of YARN, the support for Docker will provide a very elegant
 solution to allow applications to package their software into a Docker
 container (entire Linux file system incl. custom versions of perl, python
 etc.) and use it as a blueprint to launch all their YARN containers with
 requisite software environment. This provides both consistency (all YARN
 containers will have the same software environment) and isolation (no
 interference with whatever is installed on the physical machine).
 In addition to software isolation mentioned above, Docker containers will
 provide resource, network, and user-namespace isolation.
 Docker provides resource isolation through cgroups, similar to
 LinuxContainerExecutor. This prevents one job from taking other jobs
 resource(memory and CPU) on the same hadoop cluster.
 User-namespace isolation will ensure that the root on the container is mapped
 an unprivileged user on the host. This is currently being added to Docker.
 Network isolation will ensure that one user’s network traffic is completely
 isolated from another user’s network traffic.
 Last but not the least, the interaction of Docker and Kerberos will have to
 be worked out. These Docker containers must work in a secure hadoop
 environment.

[~eronwright] We are working to make it easy to use this ContainerExecutor.
[~chenchun] Thanks for the patch. We have tried that approach, but changing
this many interfaces is a bit intrusive and would not go in before
Hadoop/Yarn-3.0.0( I think). Therefore we are thinking of an interim approach
to give users the ability to run DockerContainerExecutor interchangeably.

We at altiscale are running this on a 6 node cluster all the time.
The working example uses this image: sequenceiq/hadoop-docker:2.4.1
That absolutely works in a multi-node cluster.

I don't know anything about sequenceiq/hadoop-docker:2.6.0.

[~chenchun] Thanks a lot for your feedback.
I have made some of the changes you’ve requested.
1) I am excluding this if you look at writeLaunchEnv
2) In this first phase, we want to make this patch as simple as possible, and
so we don’t want to add the burden of additional networking on the admin, which
is why we are not changing this.
3) Similarly, we do not want to allow an unlimited number of configuration
options to the docker container. We want to do this in future. Feel free to
create a new task under the umbrella jira, and submit your pull request.
4) I have found it useful for certain jobs. Please look at my test.
5) Agreed, and changed.

[~ravihoo], I have made most of the changes you’ve requested. Let me know if
anything else is needed.

 Docker (https://www.docker.io/) is, increasingly, a very popular container
 technology.
 In context of YARN, the support for Docker will provide a very elegant
 solution to allow applications to *package* their software into a Docker
 container (entire Linux file system incl. custom versions of perl, python
 etc.) and use it as a blueprint to launch all their YARN containers with
 requisite software environment. This provides both consistency (all YARN
 containers will have the same software environment) and isolation (no
 interference with whatever is installed on the physical machine).

Sid, thanks for looking at it.
The docker image is sequenceiq/hadoop-docker:2.4.0 with all the HADOOP_*
environments exposed. I would not even upload our image if sequenceiq's image
exposed all the environment variables.
So I'm not sure why it takes so much time. I'd say try comparing it with the
download time of sequenceiq/hadoop-docker:2.4.0(on a different machine,
otherwise you'll get the tag from the docker cache).

I'll try to rebase the patch soon.

 Yarn right now uses the location of the JAVA_HOME on the host to launch
 containers. This does not work with Docker containers which have their own
 filesystem namespace and OS. If the location of the Java binary of the
 container to be launched is configurable, yarn can launch containers that
 have java in a different location than the host.

We have decided to create an umbrella issue to cover the integration between
YARN and Docker(YARN-2466).
This task(YARN-1964) has the following scope:
1) Launch docker containers from YARN with net=host mode. This will allow the
container to take on the host's network, and therefore the YARN administrators
will not need to set up special networking for docker.
2) Allow users to provide docker images through the job configuration.
3) Setup and user guides.

The rest(secure hadoop, advanced networking) will be handled in other issues
under YARN-2466.
Please add your feedback to this plan on this jira.
Thanks!
Abin

Docker (https://www.docker.io/) is, increasingly, a very popular container
technology.

In context of YARN, the support for Docker will provide a very elegant solution
to allow applications to package their software into a Docker container (entire
Linux file system incl. custom versions of perl, python etc.) and use it as a
blueprint to launch all their YARN containers with requisite software
environment. This provides both consistency (all YARN containers will have the
same software environment) and isolation (no interference with whatever is
installed on the physical machine).

Last but not the least, the interaction of Docker and Kerberos will have to be
worked out. These Docker containers must work in a secure hadoop environment.

 Different container types (default, LXC, docker, VM box, etc.) have different
 semantics on isolation of security, namespace/env, performance, etc.
 Per discussions in YARN-1964, we have some good thoughts on supporting
 different types of containers running on YARN and specified by application at
 runtime which largely enhance YARN's flexibility to meet heterogenous app's
 requirement on isolation at runtime.

After YARN-1964, I can work on extending the containerRequest so that it can

 Different container types (default, LXC, docker, VM box, etc.) have different
 semantics on isolation of security, namespace/env, performance, etc.
 Per discussions in YARN-1964, we have some good thoughts on supporting
 different types of containers running on YARN and specified by application at
 runtime which largely enhance YARN's flexibility to meet heterogenous app's
 requirement on isolation at runtime.

Right, there maybe other, better alternatives. What kinds of extensibility are
we supporting here? What kind of containers will YARN be able to support? What
kind of configurations would these need?

From the answers to these questions we can start talking about the
abstractions needed to let Yarn launch all kinds of containers.

This adds a new ContainerExecutor called DockerContainerExecutor.
The ContainerExecutor takes two yarn-site.xml configuration params:
1) MR_CONTAINER_NAME: The name of the container. This container must be pulled
and available on the nodemanagers.
2) MR_CONTAINER_ARGS: The arguments to the docker container. This can be used
to mount the hadoop client jars on the container.

Wangda Tan, I like your suggestion. The patch that I've posted has a version of
the DefaultContainerExecutor that launches Docker. Right now the Executor type
and Container names can be changed only on yarn-site.xml. However, I would like
to move it down to the job configuration so that we can achieve what've said:
For matlab jobs, users would specify the matlab container in their jobconf, for
their regular mapred job, they would specify yarn containers.

Junping Du, I agree with the idea of a generic executor. The
LinuxContainerExecutor can be extended to launch docker. However, we have to
work out how the resource-isolation management is handled between docker and
CgroupsLCEResourcesHandler.

Thanks for the feedback!

Jay Vyas,
I think the task here is to enable yarn to launch docker containers, not the
other way around. I know it's possible to launch yarn from inside a docker
container, but that's outside the scope of this task.
