[~Jim_Brennan], RE unit test failures for branch-3.2:

I ran all of them in my local environment. They all passed except the following:
{noformat}
TestFSSchedulerConfigurationStore
TestSystemMetricsPublisherForV2
TestCombinedSystemMetricsPublisher
TestRMEmbeddedElector
{noformat}
They all fail in the same way with and without the patch from this JIRA.

I will go ahead and commit these patches.

[~Jim_Brennan], Thanks for the work on this JIRA and especially for the latest
patch. The latest patch looks good, but we will need patches for branch-3.2 and
earlier. YARN-9052 (MockRMAppSubmissionData.Builder) was only introduced in
branch-3.3 and was not backported.

 ]

Peter Bacsko commented on YARN-9903:

_"Please let me know if you are OK with this change.  Without it, my tests were
failing because this code was only looking for reservations for NO_LABEL."_

This is very important. After we discovered and analyzed YARN-10283, we tried a
simple workaround where we return {{LOCALITY_SKIPPED}} if {{needToUnreserve}}
is true and we use node labels (basically what I mentioned in
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/YARN-10283?focusedCommentId=17112051=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel#comment-17112051).
 That eliminated the problem of starvation and we no longer saw the "Failed to
accept allocation proposal" messages. Everything looked fine until the same
problem re-appeared.

This time the logged messages are different but apps got stuck in ACCEPTED
regardless. Right now [~tarunparimi] is trying to figure out how this can
happen, but most likely we have to call {{application.findNodeToUnreserve()}}.
I'm not sure if it's really necessary to pass the label string, it depends on
what {{reservedContainers}} contains. If it cannot contain nodes that belong to
other partitions and we use exclusive labels then I think we are fine.

Anyway, I'll review the latest patch later today or tomorrow.

The two tests I added are basically the same, except that the first one
specifies the labels with the resource requests, while the second uses the
setDefaultNodeLabelExpression on the queue to specify the label.

Thanks [~Jim_Brennan] for the updated patch. I have a question about the unit
test {{testContainerReservationContinueLookingWithDefaultLabels}}. Am I correct
in that this test although the app in the test doesn't request labelled
resources, it still is using resources on labelled nodes because the label is
non-exclusive? If so, was the purpose to test that it works the same in that
case?

Jim Brennan commented on YARN-9903:
---

[~epayne], I have added unit tests in patch 003.   I originally tried adding a
test to TestReservations based on testAssignToQueue(), but I was having trouble
enabling the node label support in that test.  I instead added two tests based
on testAssignToQueue() in TestNodeLabelContainerAllocation.   The only
difference between them is one uses default labels for the queues and the other
specifies the labels in the resource requests.

While testing this, I found that I had to make this additional change in
RegularContainerAllocator.checkHeadroom():
{noformat}
Resource resourceCouldBeUnReserved = application.getCurrentReservation();
{noformat}
Changed to:
{noformat}
Resource resourceCouldBeUnReserved =
application.getAppAttemptResourceUsage().getReserved(nodePartition);
{noformat}
Please let me know if you are OK with this change.  Without it, my tests were
failing because this code was only looking for reservations for NO_LABEL.

 This made me wonder about the change [~pbacsko] made in his patch for
YARN-10283 where he passes the nodePartition to
application.findNodeToUnreserve(). I have not included that change in this
patch. Let me know if you think I should.

[~Jim_Brennan], The code changes in the latest patch look good. Can you please
provide a unit test?

I think the test failure for TestFairSchedulerPreemption is unrelated. It
sometimes succeeds and sometimes fails for me in my local environment.

As [~Jim_Brennan] pointed out, our usage of node labels is somewhat limited. On
the one hand, we have a few clusters with node labels, and jobs are constantly
being run in those queues. However, we don't use many features that are
provided by node labels. For example, we only use exclusive node labels.

Having said that, I think that this feature is safe. I don't think the various
node label features would have much of an effect on un-scheduling and
re-scheduling reservations. And, as Jim says, we have been using this fix for a
long time internally.

We have been running with this patch in branch-2.8 for years on many large
production clusters, so yes, it is safe. We currently use node-labels
sparingly. I'm not sure if they were used more heavily in the past. [~epayne]
could speak to that.

Note that this patch does not currently have a test case. I was about to start
working on this and discovered this Jira and YARN-10283 and thought I should
offer up what we have.

[~tarunparimi], [~pbacsko] we have been reviewing internal Verizon Media
(Yahoo) code changes, and this is one of them. We changed to allow
reservations continue looking for labeled nodes. We have been running with
this change in our branch-2.8 based code since 2016. I will submit a patch for
trunk here. This seems more relevant to what we did compared to YARN-10283.
