TimelineClient provides the Java method to put timeline entities. It's also
good to wrap over all GET APIs (both entity and domain), and deserialize the
json response into Java POJO objects.

Can I note that the compatibility guidelines already declare that the History
Server APIs (see
[http://hadoop.apache.org/docs/current/hadoop-project-dist/hadoop-common/Compatibility.html#REST_APIs]
, it's just that the link
hadoop-yarn/hadoop-yarn-site/HistoryServerRest.html doesn't resolve to
anything.

If YARN-2444 were to be altered so that the GET call was visible from
TimelineClient. then there wouldn't be an explicit API/model of the v1 APIs to
maintain, simply a REST view for callers to set up paths and do it themselves.
The advantage of doing it this way is to pick up the client's UGI/SPNEGO
integration, as well as its retry logic.

Thanks for the comments Steve; those definitely sound like good suggestions.
However, I'm not going to spend time updating the patch again if we're not
going to actually commit this, and it seems like we're not. If that ever
changes, I'll make sure to incorporate them though.

I'm not in a position to comment on ATS/ATSv2, except in the general RESTy
client stuff the tests. Low level stuff

h2. production

# {{ public ClientResponse doGettingJson(String path)}} needs to include HTTP
error code when converting/raising exceptions. I can see the existing code
doesn't do that, but there's no reason to copy that, is there?
# consider also including URL of server in the exceptions, as the likeliest
cause of failure *will* be client-side config.
# this could be a good time to switch to the SLF4J logging API in the class;
leaving old log commands alone but using the new inline expansion with
curly-braces feature for new ones

.h2

# {{testPostEntities}} doesn't need to catch and throw an exception; throwing
it direct stops stack traces getting lost.
# add a timeout; a rule can do this
{code}
@Rule public Timeout testTimeout = new Timeout(3);
{code}

# For (simple) tests that expect an exception, you can just go
{{@Test(expected=YarnException.class)}} and have JUnit handle the checks.
Doesn't work for content testing
# For those tests looking for string values -can you make the error strings
constant in the production code, so if changed the tests don't break.
# we can switch to Java 7 constructors now

# the assertions in {{testGetEntities()}} are pretty complex. Could some of it
be factored out, into something like {{assertEntityAt(e2, entities, 1)}},
{{assertEntitySize(entities, 1)}}
# If the class had a field {{ApplicationHistoryServer ahs}}, stopping it could
be part of teardown; no need for the try/finally clauses
# you've added krb.conf file bonded to a KDC running on port 88. Is a KDC
needed for the tests? If so it needs to be against a miniKDC, rather than a
local one expected to have a realm of APACHE.ORG

Even if ATS v2 makes it for 2.8, I imagine it won't be fully stable; I'm
assuming we're not going to suddenly throw away the old ATS in 2.8, right? We
have to mark it deprecated and leave it in for a few releases, especially if
the new ATS isn't 100% ready yet.

We seem to be assuming that this API won't be compatible with the new ATS. I
agree; it likely won't. That also means that the REST API won't either. So,
regardless of whether or not we add this Java API, users will have to rewrite
their code to use a new API. Given that, it's a lot easier and cleaner for
Java users to rewrite their code from one Java API to another Java API, than it
is to rewrite their custom wrapped REST API and JSON handling code (which they
also have to write themselves) to a new Java API (and that's assuming we ship a
new Java API in 2.8; what if we only have another REST API? That would be even
harder for users).
And if the API turns out to be compatible, then we're already ahead of the
game. Either way, it seems like it would be easier for everyone if we put in
this API, even if it's going to be obsolete.

Keep in mind that even if it only lasts one release, not everyone updates their
cluster every time a new Hadoop release is out. There are many users who will
stay on 2.7 (or distributed derived therefrom) for quite a while and would
benefit from this API in the mean time.

I propose we get this in.

I understand the compatibility concern. My understanding is we would like to
support the current APIs in TimelineClient with the new implementation as well.
We can handle the new APIs added here along with them. To be on the safer side,
we could annotate these methods as evolving and graduate them to stable if we
continue to support them with the new implementation.

Coming to the patch itself, I feel getEntity is a special case of getEntities.
To limit the number of new APIs being added, can we get rid of it?

[~rkanter], [~vinodkv] - thoughts?

It seems that Spark wants the stable APIs. But we know, based on the new data
model, APIs will be changed accordingly. One step back, even the APIs are not
changed, we usually be a bit conservative to mark them \@Unstable in the
release where they're pushed out.

bq. Coming to the patch itself, I feel getEntity is a special case of
getEntities. To limit the number of new APIs being added, can we get rid of it?

They're wrapping different REST APIs. One get and one search, though we can
narrow down the result set to one entity. If we want to move on with it, I
suggest keeping both.

We'd rather not depend on unstable APIs. But in this context, what does
Unstable mean? When ATS v2 is released, will all support for ATS v1 be
removed? Are you gonna change all the APIs to work against v2, making code
built against v1 effectively broken?

I'd imagine that if v2 is really incompatible you'd add a new set of APIs and
then deprecate v1 instead. The v1 APIs would be public, stable and deprecated
at that point.

[~hitesh] - in my optimistic opinion, Timeline v2 is at least 6 months out.
Ideally, I would like for 2.8 to have come out before then, but that is besides
the point. And, as Robert mentioned, I suspect it will take us at least another
3 months to stabilize it enough to recommend it over Timeline v1. I feel it is
only reasonable to provide a way for downstream apps to use the existing ATS
until then.

Zhijie's suggestion of marking it Unstable and adding comments to capture the
reason seems like a good approach to me.

Robert Kanter commented on YARN-2423:

If we're concerned that this Java API would change, wouldn't we have the same
problem with the REST API? If we can make the REST API compatible, then the
Java API would also be compatible and there's no problem; if we can't make the
REST API compatible, then the Java API also wouldn't be compatible and we'd
have a problem anyway.

That said, based on the data model we've created for the new ATS vs what we
have in the old ATS, I think making the APIs compatible is going to be very
difficult. For instance, we have the very specific entities like Flow, User,
Queue, etc, and while we can maybe emulate those with the generic ones in the
old ATS, it would get very messy and users would still have to update their
code to deal with those. The posting API would be even more problematic for
3rd party AMs; there's a lot of information that will be missing if we somehow
get that to work. In the new ATS discussions, we keep saying how we should
make it compatible with the old API, but I'm not sure how that's going to work.

IMHO, it would be better if we just kept the old ATS and the new ATS separate.
When the new ATS is ready to ship, we'd recommend switching to the new one, but
the old one would still work with the old API (I suppose we'd have to leave it
around for a while, deprecated, before removing it).

As it is now, anyone using the current ATS has to write their own REST client
and deal with the json on their own; while not super-difficult, it does make
using the ATS harder. It would be easier for users who aren't planning on
upgrading so quickly to a new Hadoop version with the new ATS, to have this
Java API.

In any event, I think we should make a final decision on whether or not to add
this Java API so we can stop this from being in limbo. It's been basically
done since October.

Sorry, I misspoke. Yes, without this patch, they are the REST APIs; that is all
we have.

bq. Are they declared as InterfaceAudience(Public)? If they're not, we're not
willing to use those in Spark, because there's no commitment from Yarn to keep
them stable.
In my opinion, the APIs being added in this JIRA are no more stable than the
REST APIs. They will possibly change the moment our data-model via YARN-2928
changes and correspondingly the REST APIs change. So, If Spark doesn't want to
code against this in a shimmed layer, I am not sure I can be of much help.
FWIW, I am trying as much to maintain compatibility of what exists so far.

I'm not trying to block this patch, just pointing out potential breakages in
the near future given YARN-2928.

Hi Vinod,

I think the point that Robert was trying to make is that adding these APIs
might force Yarn to maintain compatibility for it. So it would allow clients to
code against the public API and have a reasonable expectation that it wouldn't
break.

But I understand that with the redesign it might be hard to maintain
compatibility. I guess it's a choice you guys have to make, but the lack of a
public, stable read API is definitely a barrier for Spark adopting this
feature. (I understand we could write code to talk to the REST server directly,
but you seem to imply that this approach would also run into compatibility
issues after the redesign.)

[~rkanter], I am just pointing that the existing users today directly use the
raw TimelineClient APIs. Adding a new API for an older framework we are
rewriting anyways is backwards to me and additional burden of compatibility -
unless we can write these new APIs in such a way that we know for sure that we
will support them in the YARN-2928 rewrite.

[~vanzin], can Spark use the existing Timeline APIs that we already support and
trying to maintain compatibility for MapReduce, Tez and Hive projects? The
problem is that even if we implement the proposal in this JIRA, come YARN-2928,
these new APIs may break and so Spark will have to add shim layers in either
cases.

[~vinodkv], as [~zjshen] pointed out earlier, these Java APIs are very tied to
the REST APIs. So, if there ends up being a compatibility problem with the
Java API, I'd imagine the REST API would have the same problem. And given that
the new ATS will still take some time, it would be very useful to make a Java
API available in the meantime, even if we have to eventually deprecate it.
Even though we're making a new ATS, many users are still using the older one.
As [~vanzin] pointed out, this JIRA is a blocker for SPARK-1537; it would make
them better able to use the current ATS.

Apologies for coming in late, but should we rewrite this to be inline with
YARN-2928? Given YARN-2928, I don't see an immediate value in having the patch
as is (with a new API that nobody uses in the interim) and then rewrite it once
more for YARN-2928. I know considerable effort has been spent on this, but what

Just wanted to point out that this bug is currently marked as a blocker for
integration between Spark and the ATS. It would really great to avoid having to

Sure, I'll review the last patch. No matter the java client lib exists or not,
we have exposed the REST getter APIs, and have users that depend on them.
Having java client lib may make put more issue on backward compatibility of TS

make the REST APIs compatible, which is the internal stuff within the java

From what we discussed in Wednesday's ATS standup, I think we're in agreement
that we should put in the TimelineClient GET API for now so it's available to
users of the current ATS, and we can handle compatibility later when we figure
out how that's going to work in general.

I agree that we should have a Java API for reads in the new ATS too.

I'm not sure how realistic it will be not to impact callers of the timeline
client between the current ATS and the next gen if that's what you're asking.
As such, work we may do on this JIRA would not have a direct implication on
what happens on the next gen.

How important/critical is it to support this in the 2.7 timeframe? I think the
current consensus is not to work on major feature additions on ATS. But I'm not
sure how major this would be.

Separately, it would be desirable to support Java APIs for reads in the next
gen too.

When I originally started working on this, we hadn't even started planning the
new ATS yet. The motivation was to make things easier for frameworks (e.g.
Spark) who want to use the API, but would rather have Java calls instead of
REST calls.

I believe we're planning on doing an alpha for the new ATS in 2.8, so if we can
include some Java API for GET calls in 2.7, that would at least give closure
here. [~zjshen], [~sjlee0], any thoughts on how we should handle compatibility

bq. This is based on the current implementation. We can try to add a
compatibility layer or something in another JIRA. Though I'm not sure how
feasible that will be; the data models are somewhat different.

If the current implementation is not planned to be supported in the long term,
why introduce a java API that will soon be deprecated or rendered obsolete if
the data models are different? Or is the only intention to backport this
feature/API into 2.4, 2.5 and 2.6 for existing users of the current
implementation of ATS?

[~zjshen] [~rkanter] Is this based on the current implementation or based on
the next-gen impl currently in progress? If this is committed in time for the
next release, I am assuming that the next-gen impl will retain compatibility?

I think it is a bit too early to mark these APIs as Public ( as it enforces a
suggestion that the APIs are stable ) . A proper underlying storage such as
HBase is yet to be completed and that may have repercussions on what is/is not
supported in a scalable manner.
