If YARN-2444 were to be altered so that the GET call was visible from TimelineClient. then there wouldn't be an explicit API/model of the v1 APIs to maintain, simply a REST view for callers to set up paths and do it themselves. We have to mark it deprecated and leave it in for a few releases, especially if the new ATS isn't 100% ready yet. We seem to be assuming that this API won't be compatible with the new ATS. I agree; it likely won't. That also means that the REST API won't either. So, regardless of whether or not we add this Java API, users will have to rewrite their code to use a new API. Given that, it's a lot easier and cleaner for Java users to rewrite their code from one Java API to another Java API, than it is to rewrite their custom wrapped REST API and JSON handling code (which they also have to write themselves) to a new Java API (and that's assuming we ship a new Java API in 2.8; what if we only have another REST API? That would be even harder for users). And if the API turns out to be compatible, then we're already ahead of the game. Either way, it seems like it would be easier for everyone if we put in this API, even if it's going to be obsolete. Keep in mind that even if it only lasts one release, not everyone updates their cluster every time a new Hadoop release is out. There are many users who will stay on 2.7 (or distributed derived therefrom) for quite a while and would benefit from this API in the mean time. If we can make the REST API compatible, then the Java API would also be compatible and there's no problem; if we can't make the REST API compatible, then the Java API also wouldn't be compatible and we'd have a problem anyway. That said, based on the data model we've created for the new ATS vs what we have in the old ATS, I think making the APIs compatible is going to be very difficult. For instance, we have the very specific entities like Flow, User, Queue, etc, and while we can maybe emulate those with the generic ones in the old ATS, it would get very messy and users would still have to update their code to deal with those. The posting API would be even more problematic for 3rd party AMs; there's a lot of information that will be missing if we somehow get that to work. In the new ATS discussions, we keep saying how we should make it compatible with the old API, but I'm not sure how that's going to work. IMHO, it would be better if we just kept the old ATS and the new ATS separate. When the new ATS is ready to ship, we'd recommend switching to the new one, but the old one would still work with the old API (I suppose we'd have to leave it around for a while, deprecated, before removing it). As it is now, anyone using the current ATS has to write their own REST client and deal with the json on their own; while not super-difficult, it does make using the ATS harder. It would be easier for users who aren't planning on upgrading so quickly to a new Hadoop version with the new ATS, to have this Java API. In any event, I think we should make a final decision on whether or not to add this Java API so we can stop this from being in limbo. It's been basically done since October. So it would allow clients to code against the public API and have a reasonable expectation that it wouldn't break. But I understand that with the redesign it might be hard to maintain compatibility. I guess it's a choice you guys have to make, but the lack of a public, stable read API is definitely a barrier for Spark adopting this feature. (I understand we could write code to talk to the REST server directly, but you seem to imply that this approach would also run into compatibility issues after the redesign.) Adding a new API for an older framework we are rewriting anyways is backwards to me and additional burden of compatibility - unless we can write these new APIs in such a way that we know for sure that we will support them in the YARN-2928 rewrite. [~vanzin], can Spark use the existing Timeline APIs that we already support and trying to maintain compatibility for MapReduce, Tez and Hive projects? The problem is that even if we implement the proposal in this JIRA, come YARN-2928, these new APIs may break and so Spark will have to add shim layers in either cases. So, if there ends up being a compatibility problem with the Java API, I'd imagine the REST API would have the same problem.
