Lee,
At the yahoo groups Zappa_List page, there's a FAQ in the files section that
explains vining and how to participate, and what is expected of the
participants; check it out.
Normally, you'd respond to the LATEST vine message by simply typing " your
name-country << " after the last name on the list. It couldn't be easier!

Nick,
You may want to recheck the messages at the yahoo groups Zappa_List page; I
think you have a few others before you in line (you responded correctly, but
to an earlier message I'm afraid). I could be wrong tho...
Warm Regards,
SOFA

[Zappa-List] Mental CT Hygiene Delemma

2005-06-27 Thread SOFA

Hey Kids!
I think I'd like some opinions, if you'd be so kind.
Thanks to brother Bart, in Poland, I have sought out the recording of  801130, Des Moines, IA - billed as "The sickest songlist you've ever seen". It's a B-
audience recording (and IMO that B- is kind; I'd rate it a C-). I intend to
start a vine of this show...
Now I intend to rip this to my machine, and tweeze it for my own enjoyment.
I believe that I can improve upon the overall quality; tho there are limits to
what you can do, of course (a polished turd is still a turd - FZ). My question
to all of you out there: would you rather have a copy warts and all, or would
you rather have a SOFA tweezed copy?
PLEASE! Don't bother to respond to this with "I want a copy when it's
ready" - that is NOT part of the conversation right now. I wanna know if the
collectors out there would rather mess with it themselves (if they mess with it
at all), or listen to a "pure" artifact. I'd also love to know if a cleaner copy
of this show exists, but I kinda doubt it.
For example: the Illinois Enema Bandit encore on my copies does not include
Sweet Lelani - it cuts off just as the solo starts to roll. And - I think - it's
Pick Me I'm Clean that has a nasty warble, until the song finally just cuts out.
I would replace these with (god forbid) tracks from around the same time... I
wanna seriously mess with this mofo; because right now, I find it damn near
unlistenable. But that's me. I really wanna know what you guys think. Because I
will gladly pass on this turd as it sits...
Let the debate begin...
Regards,
SOFA

RE: [Zappa-List] convert

2005-06-27 Thread Jim L

So I think
I’m understanding this better now. The original question on this thread
was about video conversion. Then John asked about the data CD format for Mac /
PC. So anyway I think the key here is the Joliet format or UDF102 with a Joliet
bridge. One of these 2 formats used to create the data disc on a PC should make
it compatible. My software can do both as well as an ISO 9660 format. The last
one can’t add a Joliet Bridge however. I’m guessing John asked
about this with concept of vine in mind. In other words if we do a vine of flac
or ape files it just wouldn’t be good if a Mac couldn’t read the
data disc containing the files. I’d never considered this angle before.

I’d
trust your treatment and being basically lazy would prefer not to have to do it
myself.

Hygiene Delemma

Hey Kids!

I think I'd like some opinions, if you'd be so kind.

Thanks to brother Bart, in Poland, I have sought out the recording of
801130, Des Moines, IA - billed as "The
sickest songlist you've ever seen". It's a B- audience
recording (and IMO that B- is kind; I'd rate it a C-). I intend to start a vine
of this show...

Now I intend to rip this to my machine, and tweeze it for my own
enjoyment. I believe that I can improve upon the overall quality; tho there are
limits to what you can do, of course (a polished turd is still a turd - FZ). My
question to all of you out there: would you rather have a copy warts and all,
or would you rather have a SOFA tweezed copy?

PLEASE! Don't bother to respond to this with "I want a copy when
it's ready" - that is NOT part of the conversation right now. I wanna know
if the collectors out there would rather mess with it themselves (if they mess
with it at all), or listen to a "pure" artifact. I'd also love to
know if a cleaner copy of this show exists, but I kinda doubt it.

For example: the Illinois Enema Bandit encore on my copies does not
include Sweet Lelani - it cuts off just as the solo starts to roll. And - I
think - it's Pick Me I'm Clean that has a nasty warble, until the song finally
just cuts out. I would replace these with (god forbid) tracks from around the
same time... I wanna seriously mess with this mofo; because right now, I find
it damn near unlistenable. But that's me. I really wanna know what you guys
think. Because I will gladly pass on this turd as it sits...

Let the debate begin...

Regards,

SOFA

RE: [Zappa-List] convert

2005-06-27 Thread Jim L

I use
Roxio 7.5 for the PC and It offers the three formats I mentioned. From what I’ve
read all data CD is based on iso 9600. Ten there are additional layers of formatting
used to access the files. Joliet seems to be one Mac can use. The ISO 9660 may
be a PC only thing. I’m not sure what format options Nero offers.

Hi John

Here are a couple you could check out.

The best is Roxio Toast, just drag and drop  and it will do the
job.

It can be expensive though.

Like Cris said TMPGEnc’s video editor can probably do it They also
make the best DVD authoring software I’ve seen so far with a free full featured
try out. There are a bunch of other products available as well. This website is
like the oracle of all video knowledge.

Hi All,

does anyone know of any free software a guy can download that will convert MPEG, AVI, Windows media and so on, into
VCD/DVD or any other format that is playable on domestic DVD players? A
facility to swap between NTSC and PAL formats might be good too, but maybe I am
asking a little much there.

All the

Re: [Zappa-List] Mental CT Hygiene Delemma

2005-06-27 Thread SOFA

There are lots of nice audio editing suites out there John; I happen to use
Soundforge 4.5. This is an old program that was given to me a long time ago...
They have since upgraded to a 6 or better? Anyway, Sonic Foundry, who make it,
have their shit together afa I'm concerned.
Editing programs can be costly; I'd find someone with a Soundforge program
who'd be willing to share with you - as I did. I like Soundforge because of it's
ease. I had no manual, or instructions with it and I could operate it
immediately (and I am like supremely stupid with techie things).
CoolEdit is another program that's kinda popular...
I bet JimL could quote a raft of options.
For my money - or complete lack thereof - it's Soundforge.
