[zd1211-devs] zd1211rw firmware redistribution
Fedora maintainers are currently reviewing zd1211rw firmware for possible inclusion into the repository provided that the established requirements [1] are met. Anyone have comments on the requirements? If I remember correctly, Zydas gave permission for redistribution of its zd1211 firmware; if so is it still valid under the new ownership (Atheros)? [1] Requirements: 1. The files are non-executable (note: this means that the files cannot run on their own, not that they are just chmod -x) 2. The files are not libraries. 3. The files are standalone, not embedded in executable or library code. 4. Explicit permission is given by the owner to freely redistribute without restrictions (this permission must be included, in writing, with the files in the packaging) 5. The files must be necessary for the functionality of open source code being included in Fedora. The License tag for any firmware that disallows modification should be set to: Redistributable, no modification permitted Firmware packages should be named foo-firmware, where foo is the driver or other hardware component that the firmware is for. - Take Surveys. Re: [zd1211-devs] Super huge ping with zd1211rw_mac80211
Richard, The latest development fedora build (rawhide) load both mac80211 and softmac. Can you run lsmod | grep 1211 if you see zd1211rw, ieee80211softmac which is the older driver, try to unloading it: modprobe -r zd1211rw This will insure that you are actually using only zd1211rw_mac80211 and not the other. It may not help but least we know you are actually using zd1211rw_mac80211 Also, maybe you can also run the following and display the outputs to see that config setup is right: /sbin/ip route /sbin/ip address iwconfig eric Richard Hughes wrote: I'm using the latest fedora kernel snapshot with an up to data zd1211rw_mac80211. Recently I've been getting very slow downloads, and I've found even pinging the router takes a *long* amount of time: 64 bytes from 10.0.0.10: icmp_seq=358 ttl=64 time=11428 ms 64 bytes from 10.0.0.10: icmp_seq=359 ttl=64 time=11840 ms 64 bytes from 10.0.0.10: icmp_seq=360 ttl=64 time=11984 ms 64 bytes from 10.0.0.10: icmp_seq=361 ttl=64 time=12826 ms 64 bytes from 10.0.0.10: icmp_seq=362 ttl=64 time=12421 ms 64 bytes from 10.0.0.10: icmp_seq=363 ttl=64 time=11834 ms 64 bytes from 10.0.0.10: icmp_seq=364 ttl=64 time=11959 ms Any idea how to debug this? There was no option in the zd1211rw_mac80211 for verbose output, and dmesg is very unhelpful. Thanks for any help, Richard. - Take Surveys. Earn Cash. Igor, Ubuntu Edgy Released version have the zd1211rw driver installed by default. The basic functions are operational for many USB wireless hardware that are listed and tested on http://zd1211.ath.cx/ I did a simple stress test using rsync command, transferring files as large as 10GB each and a source directory files totaling more than 30G+ continuously without any problem. WPA encryption was also enabled. Right now I'm getting a slow throughput of about 1.7MB/sec peak regardless of how I set the rate (tested at 10M, 24M, 36M, 48M, 54M). The other minor problem is noisy message outputs from dmesg. I'm getting lots of these debugging output messages: printk: 442 messages suppressed. TKIP: replay detected: STA=00:51:18:4a:dc:c2 previous TSC 0003a .. received... TSC 033... (something like that) Anyway, the best thing to do is just plug it in and see if it works. Re: [zd1211-devs] zd1211rw firmware distribution
Daniel Drake wrote: The firmware is not rewritten and we don't know the instruction format. The vendor firmware is GPL, could be included in the kernel, but instead we pull it from userspace as this is more sensible and doesn't tie a firmware version to a driver version. OK, I just installed Ubuntu 6.10 RC1 (edgy). zd1211rw/firmware are included in the kernel (2.6.17-10-generic) and is fully functional without having to download the firmware from http://www.deine-taler.de. (thumbs up for Ubuntu) I just looked at the output of dmesg under Fedora Core 6 (kernel 2.6.18-1.2798.fc6-xen). Here is the output: ieee80211_crypt: unregistered algorithm 'NULL' ieee80211_crypt: registered algorithm 'NULL' ieee80211: 802.11 data/management/control stack, git-1.1.13 ieee80211: Copyright (C) 2004-2005 Intel Corporation [EMAIL PROTECTED] usb 3-1: Could not load firmware file zd1211/zd1211_ub. I figured maybe Fedora has the older version of zd1211rw, so I will file a bug report at bugzilla.redhat.com to have the module updated. Remember to set the transmit rate manually as their is no automatic adjustment. But yes, I think speed isn't as good as the vendor driver, although their RX engine has deviated so much it's hard to compare specific details... Daniel I will try that again a little later. [zd1211-devs] zd1211rw firmware distribution
I have a question regarding the zd1211rw firmware. Is it supposed to be included within the latest stock kernel (I'm using latest kernel development version of Fedora Core 6 - soon to be release - 2.6.18-1.2798.fc6-xen) or does it require user/distribution download and installation to make it functional. I'm assuming that the firmware is also a re-write and licensed under GPL; therefore, permitted to be included with the kernel. If NOT, then that should clearly answer my question that it could NOT be included. By the way, I'm stress testing the latest zd1211rw included in the kernel (2.6.18-1.2798.fc6-xen) with firmware snapshot dated 10-19-06 downloaded from http://www.deine-taler.de . So far so good, but very slow, maximum rate 1.1MB/sec (8.8Mbit/sec), where it should at least approach half max speed of 802.11g (54Mbit/sec). Network setup: 3 clients (Airlink+AWLLL3025 - zd1211 chipset = ID: 0ace:1211) - connected to USB 2.0 at 802.11g - each running rsync to download 10GB+ of source tree from a wireless router rated at 802.11g - encryption: WPA-PSK - rate setup 54MBit/sec - distance from AP ~ 2 feet Thanks to Daniel, Ulrich, et al for job well done! eric - Using Tomcat but need to do more?
