It remembers me of the old device reinitialization problem, however
this happens here after the firmware is loaded. We have mitigated the
reinitialization problem, but it is still there and depends on
certain combination of the ZD1211B firmware and the USB host adapter.
Only replugging solves the problem.

Could you send us a more complete log from plugging in the device
until the error happens?

Kind regards,

Ulrich

Thank you very much indeed for the clarification. I've filed bug #8447,
however I've realized that the bug is present only when using a 686 kernel on
a Pentium4 hardware. Recompiling the kernel and having it Pentium4 optimized
fixes the issue.

Ok, however I suspect that, once the bug is fixed, we won't need any script
either...

Thanks again,
Lucio.

This is a rather strange script. If you're using wpa_supplicant you
don't need most of the above. Configure wpa_supplicant correctly,
manually wait until it has completed association, then configure your IP
and route info.

wpa_supplicant will handle bringing the interface up, associating, etc.

Re: [zd1211-devs] Gigafast 1215 not working

2007-05-07 Thread Lucio Crusca
I've dug a bit through the kernel sources.

The timeout is set to one second (zd_usb.c) and it's being honoured like it
should; the "time ifconfig eth5 up" command reports

real0m1.004s

So the reported error is the actual reason for the failure. The device is
expected to reply to something within one second but in certain cases it
doesn't. I don't know the driver and kernel internals enough to make more
assumptions. However this timeout issue brings another strange behaviour I've
observed sometimes at boot to my mind. It happens that when the kernel says:

Waiting for /dev to be fully populated...

the machine hangs for quite a long time (one minute or two), then it continues
booting until it finally hangs forever (at least for more than 1 hour)
on "Discovering new hardware". This happens only when the adapter is plugged,
in fact the solution is to unplug it and reboot (hard reboot with power
button). If I try to reboot without unplugging it I get the same problem
repeated. After a reboot cycle without the adapter I can plug it in again and
the boot process becomes normal, until the next time it decides to hang.

Lucio.

Maybe in your case is like reinventing the wheel, but in other cases it seems
the wheel is still like a square. Moreover seems to me that my script failure
isn't being caused by a bug in the script itself, because it fails on the
very first action, "ifconfig eth5 up". I guess the same error would happen
with your distro scripts and my hardware. And the same error happens also if
I try to bring the interface up from the command line, just after a reboot:

# ifconfig eth5 up
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Connection timeout

but this should be the first thing to do before doing anything else. I'm
stuck. iwevent output is plain silence. I suspect that it's not dhclient or
other Debian scripts bringing the interface down, but it's the driver failing
to bring it up. This would explain why I have 3 computers working and 2 not
(different hardware, probably different USB controllers, only the wireless
adapter is the same).

Lucio.

Feel free to volunteer. Personally I'm more than happy with my distro's

Here is my script (static ip):

8x--
#!/bin/bash -x

PATH=/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin

WLESS_IF=`iwconfig 2>/dev/null | grep -i essid | grep -i 'zd1211' | tr '\t' ' '
| cut --delim=' ' -f1`
if [ "$WLESS_IF" == "" ] ; then
  exit 1
fi

ifconfig $WLESS_IF up
iwconfig $WLESS_IF mode managed
iwconfig $WLESS_IF rate 2Mb
iwconfig $WLESS_IF essid "videokernel"
ifconfig $WLESS_IF 192.168.1.22 netmask 255.255.255.0
route add default gw 192.168.1.1 dev $WLESS_IF
wpa_supplicant -Bw -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf -i$WLESS_IF

--8x

Now I've just emptied /etc/network/interfaces (only "lo" defined there)
and rebooted the Pundit. I'm going to run my script... here is the output:

# ./wireless-up.sh
+ PATH=/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin
++ iwconfig
++ grep -i essid
++ grep -i zd1211

I've forgotten to launch iwevent before my script but I guess this is enough.
Why is "ifconfig eth5 up" failing?

Ok, I trust you and the logs, but I still can't figure out why it works on
3 other computers which use the same Debian 4.0, the same dhclient, the same
vanilla kernel, the same configurations under /etc/network/ and the same
Gigafast adapters. I'll have to accept that as a postulate.

Ok then. Why don't we put on the website a minimal script to bring up an
interface with zd1211rw? Seems to me that, if distro scripts cause a lot of
problems, we would make a lot of users happy...
In fact I'm the first who would be so happy to see such a script on the
website, because I have a problem in writing the script myself: if I can't
use dhclient, how do I configure my host in DHCP, even with a homebrew
script? Moreover, could you please give me a wpa_supplicant command line
that's expected to work?

Just for curiosity: has anyone already reported a bug to Debian?

I don't think iwevent prints those messages. Nevertheless, this is
implying that dhclient brings the network interface down.

Please try again without using dhclient or Debian's network config at
all. These 2 things have caused our users lots of problems.

As before, association not completed

This shows that nothing is even trying to connect to the wireless
network. So, please throw away all that Debian stuff and try this
manually :)

I've enabled softmac debug messages (and also 802.11 stack debug messages).
However I've stopped the trials with WEP, because I've noticed that with
WPA-PSK the adapter works ok, even with Debian dhclient, at least on 3 out
of 5 computers (in particular it doesn't work on 2 Pundit P1-PH1 but I hardly
believe that's the real reason). The kernel is always 2.6.21.1,
but I've noticed that the output of dhclient is different when the kernel
is compiled for 686 or for Pentium4 (686 version makes dhclient
print "send_packet: Network is down" messages that don't appear with P4
optimized version, but they both don't work nevertheless).

While dhclient is trying to get in touch with the AP, iwevent
says:

May  7 15:22:15 Acaja-Tour kernel: zd1211rw 3-5:1.0: zd_usb_enable_int()
May  7 15:22:15 Acaja-Tour kernel: zd1211rw 3-5:1.0: zd_usb_enable_int() submit
urb e86d1e40
May  7 15:22:15 Acaja-Tour kernel: zd1211rw 3-5:1.0: zd_usb_enable_int()
Couldn't submit urb. Error number -108
May  7 15:22:15 Acaja-Tour kernel: zd1211rw 3-5:1.0: zd_usb_enable_int()
May  7 15:22:15 Acaja-Tour kernel: zd1211rw 3-5:1.0: zd_usb_enable_int() submit
urb e86d1e40
May  7 15:22:15 Acaja-Tour kernel: zd1211rw 3-5:1.0: zd_usb_enable_int()
Couldn't submit urb. Error number -108

However all the above refers to problems with Debian dhclient
and I should know that Debian dhclient is not very wireless friendly
(altough it works for me on 3 other computers, same Debian, same adapters,
same kernel...). So let's focus on problems with static IP.

I've edited my /etc/network/interfaces and now it contains only the following:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto eth5
iface eth5 inet static
address 192.168.1.22
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.1
wpa-conf /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

My /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf has:

network={
ssid="videokernel"
scan_ssid=0
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
psk="mypsk"
}

After a reboot, "iwconfig eth5" says:

Warning: Driver for device eth5 has been compiled with version 22
of Wireless Extension, while this program supports up to version 20.
Some things may be broken...

eth5  IEEE 802.11b/g  ESSID:off/any  Nickname:"zd1211"
  Mode:Managed  Access Point: Invalid
  Encryption key:off
  Link Quality:0  Signal level:0  Noise level:0
  Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
  Tx excessive retries:0  Invalid misc:0   Missed beacon:0

(please note that the warning was there also when using dhcp and
it's there also on computers where the adapters do work).

Then I started iwevent and restarted networking, here is the output
of iwevent:

Waiting for Wireless Events from interfaces...
Warning: Driver for device eth5 has been compiled with version 22
of Wireless Extension, while this program supports up to version 20.
Some things may be broken...

16:05:11.988767   eth5 Set Mode:Managed

And the "netwoking start" script said:

* /etc/network/options is deprecated (see README.Debian of netbase).
Setting up IP spoofing protection...done (rp_filter).
Configuring network interfaces...SIOCSIFFLAGS: Cannot send after transport
endpoint shutdown
Could not set interface 'eth5' UP
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Cannot send after transport endpoint shutdown
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Cannot send after transport endpoint shutdown
Failed to bring up eth5.
done.

So I guess that kern.log has nothing useful, however I report it here:

There are no errors in your logs, but association did not complete. You
should now enable softmac debug messages, and also run "iwevent" in
another console while attempting to connect.
