I have a few notebooks in my dropbox so that i can work with them over many
devices.
Is there a zim reader for android that would at least give me readonly
access to the existing content. Writing a full blown zim for android would
be no small undertaking but a reader would help a lot.

Since Zim stores all its contents in TXT files, you only need a way to
access your notebook from within Android. Then you could simply use
any text editor/viewer to read your files and the system file search.
Of course a specific app would be better, but I usually browse my
