Re: [zones-discuss] Nero Linux in zones

2010-04-12 Thread valrh...@gmail.com
Thanks, James, for the sensible reply.

In fact, there are good reasons that some tools are CLI-based, and others have
a GUI. As I alluded to in my original post, I am strongly in favor of some
tools being at the command line, such as zpool, because they are simpler and
less prone to error. But if you want to aggregate files from a dozen different
directories, to backup data and code that might be spread over several file
systems, I don't see how any CLI-based utility is going to make this
easy, or more importantly, quick. Indeed, I'm not hung up about Nero, but I
just want a filebrowser-based, easy, way to burn CDs/DVDs and Blu-ray disks
with just a few clicks. I don't want to make a separate .iso file first. It's
all about saving time and hassle. I'm unwilling to invest much time in getting
something so basic to work, when there are so many other things to do.

So no one knows of a solution for OpenSolaris that is similar to what's
available on other platforms? That's too bad. I suppose I should just NFS the
filesystem and access it over the network, from a computer running either
Windows or Linux, just for burning? That seems a bit awkward... Thanks.

Re: [zones-discuss] Nero Linux in zones

2010-04-11 Thread valrh...@gmail.com
Thanks for your message. I tried to download and install this, but there kept
appearing more packages that I didn't have, had to download, and install.
Eventually it was one i couldn't find (gdk-pixbuf-config).

I think in the bigger picture this is one of the things holding back broader
adoption. As much as I love OpenSolaris and ZFS, there's maybe not enough
resources to make this a bit easier to use. Everything has to be a bit of a
chore. For doing stuff like setting up proper ZFS filesystems, it's fair to
expect the user to need to invest some time learning. zpool is such a
powerful tool, allowing so many new things, that it requires some education.

But, c'mon: CD burning? This problem was solved a decade ago. I like Nero,
because I can aggregate various directories, click twice, and my DVD comes out
verified five minutes later. The idea that i have to track down packages, or
deal with Brasero (which I'm sure can be configured; I just don't want to spend
the time for something that I already know how to do otherwise), just raises
the barrier unnecessarily for people who want to try out OpenSolaris, get it
working, and then explore its compelling new features.

People are rightfully worried about the future of OpenSolaris, but by having
some basic things be so difficult and time-consuming, just to get the basics of
usability running, only exacerbate the problem by limiting adoption.

So I reiterate my question: has anyone gotten Nero Linux to run in a Zone, and
if so, what's the best way to set it up? Thanks!

[zones-discuss] Nero Linux in zones

2010-03-26 Thread valrh...@gmail.com
I'm relatively new to OpenSolaris, and am trying to get a better CD/DVD/Bluray
program working, as I don't find Brasero to be particularly good. I've used
Nero for years on different platforms, and was wondering if I could get it to
work (Nero Linux) using zones. I tried running the Windows version within
Virtualbox, but it didn't work at all. Thanks!
