Thanks. That got me further, gnome-session runs, but now nautilus crashes.
Also, I can start up a terminal but I can't see any text because the background
color is black. I see the following in my VNC log file:

dbus does not run in a local zone.
But you may get around this issue by this workaround:
cp /var/lib/dbus/machine-id /zones/sunstudio12/root/var/lib/dbus/machine-id
(replace /zones/sunstudio12/root with the path to your zone).
