I'm not really familiar with the debian release taxonomy, so I don't know
the right names. I'm referring to the release(s) that were based on the
2.4.21 (give or take) kernel, which were considered stable about 2 years
ago.

Have you configured your zone to support the 2.6 functionality?

The best place to look for help on this is brandz-discuss, rather than
zones-discuss.

Thanks Bob, this helped me get a few steps closer!

I was able to install debian without any errors.
But it hangs when I try to boot it.

It says it was unable to mount the root filesystem..
/etc/fstab looked similar to the one in a centos zone.

I thought ok, let's have a look at a installed cent os and see how it's
configured there:

bash-2.05b# df -h
FilesystemSize Used Avail Use% Mounted on
none 67G 42G 24G 64% /
bash-2.05b# fdisk -l
bash-2.05b# mount
none on / type ufs (rw)
none on /proc type proc (rw)
bash-2.05b# more /etc/fstab
none/ ufs defaults1 1
none/proc procdefaults0 0

seems weird to me but it works? (ufs on linux?)
And compared to the config in debian, it's the same. So it should work
there too, right?

Nils, what do you mean by 'older' debian versions?
I used the latest stable netinst iso.. 4.0 release 1

On the kernel 2.6 page they write about ubuntu working in a zone (with
some problems), which is based on debian.

That's why I think debian should work as well..

I'll try to install ubuntu tomorrow and see how that's configured and all.

Thanks for your help!

Take a peek at the BrandZ 2.6 kernel page

http://opensolaris.org/os/community/brandz/todo/linux_2_6/

It gives a rather nice cookbook on how to do this. be aware that
2.6 is not complete and experimental so an older 2.4 based debian
would give best results.

Older versions of Debian use the old linuxthreads thread model, which
doesn't work properly under BrandZ. RHEL and CentOS both use the modern
NPTL thread model, which does.

[zones-discuss] Linux / BrandZ Zones

2007-10-24 Thread Sandro
Hi

I am trying to install a zone with linux, debian linux actually. I had no
problems installing CentOS with the tar ball from opensolaris.org

Let's say I have debian installed on the same box I will install solaris and
linux zones later, how do I have to create this tar ball so it will (or at
least should) work later in a zone?

Or how was the centos tar ball created?

I couldn't find anything on the web about debian or any other similar linux in
a zone (except centos and redhat). So if anyone has some information about
that, please let me know.

regards,
Luca
