Yes you can use FTP to edit them.
(Tested with HomeSite)

Whilst in agreement with Chris I would like to throw another situation in
here that CatalogAware doesn't cater for.
If you change a folder name, somewhere higher in the tree, then all the
cataloged objects references are incorrect.
I think this is the same problem that Chris mentioned but a diff

To create a new object you must supply an addForm
Try using an argument other than 'login'
Change it to something else because login could easily be a reserved
keyword.
To test this simply change it to xlogin or something similar.
