Well put. Couldn't agree more. Take the best tool for the job, based not
only on software quality and price, but also on development time,
available expertise and stuff that's already in place. In some cases
that means you can build a totally open solution based on OSS. In other
cases it means a closed solution based on Microsoft products for
example.

In most cases however it's a mix of multiple hardware and software
platforms, in which OSS fits well because of the 'Open' part. I for one
will recommend OSS most of the time (because of price, performance,
managebility and stability), but there are a number of situations where
a 'closed' piece of software is a better fit.

I know, had a similar nightmare. If that won't get you paranoid about
security, nothing will. Gotta look into autorpm one of these days...

Have you ever tried Java? If you love a vaporized head, switch to Java
and be sure to pick Oracle's Internet Application Server to be your
trustworthy companion on a steep learning curve. Can't go wrong with
Oracle ;)

I see a market for each product; Zope for content heavy, Java based
stuff for transaction heavy stuff with legacy integration etc. As long
as I don't have to go Java, I'd rather have .NET ;)

RE: [Zope] Zope and Linux flavors

2001-01-16 Thread Jonathan \(Listserv Account\)

Red Hat Linux 6.2 here. After a standard install, download and install
latest release of SSH. Open '/etc/inetd.conf', comment out all services.
Save and do a 'killall -HUP inetd'. Do 'ntsysv' and disable everything
you are not going to use on that machine (typically sendmail, nfslock,
identd, portmap etc.). Reboot after that.

That's what I do first. After that, get all the Red Hat updates from a
nearby mirror. Install all, make sure you've got at least a 2.2.16
kernel. Rebooting is not gonna hurt, check what services are started as
the machine boots.

Get Bastille Linux (http://www.bastille-linux.org) and lock down the
box, leaving only 22 and 80 open to the outside world. Well, maybe not
that extreme but you get the drift :)

Check '/etc/hosts.allow' and '/etc/hosts.deny' to make sure that only
the absolute minimum of hosts is allowed access to the server. The
latter should contain something like 'ALL: ALL'.

That catches most of the script kiddies. Still won't stop a real cracker
though, for that you need more. Much more. Read the various docs, keep a
tab on updates at Red Hat, SANS, Bugtraq etc. And remember, only the
paranoid survive in network security :)

Other Linux distros are similar, but this is the one I know :)

Not a bad idea. I wouldn't mind having a go at it, can someone at
DigiCool send me a large version of the Z ball logo and the fonts used
by 'Zope'?

Impressive. The cache management architecture is part of 2.3 right?
Gotta try it sometime this week...

Zope.org does not know my particular installation, I cannot have it
notify me when a new version is out. It doesn't automatically 'follow'
dependencies etc. etc.

Lots of reasons, mainly motivated by laziness^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H me not
having the time to keep up with everything, I want to be informed
automatically :)

Somebody has to own the domain :) I'm got space available for a CZAN
mirror if necessary. It might be something that benefits the Python
community as a whole, not just Zope users, in which case 'CZAN' is not
entirely correct ;) But hey, let's start somewhere right?

Such a product would allow users to access CZAN from within the Zope
Interface and work a bit like MS' Windows Update (if you're not familiar
with it, it rules for upgrading Windows machines over the Internet).
Install new products, new versions, hotfixes. Upgrade Zope itself.
Integrate with ZEO etc. to upgrade clusters of machines all at once...

Just thinking out loud here :) Anyone from DigiCool care to comment?
How much of it is already in the pipeline?

[Zope] CZAN Anyone?

Hi all,

Does anyone have any plans for CPAN like functionality for Zope? I'd
just love to install new products, update products already installed,
get notified when I need a Hotfix etc. The product listing at Zope.org
is getting longer all the time and I am having a hard time keeping up to
date...

Just a thought. Probably been thought of before :)

Uncle Jonathan's Magic Zope Recipe is here ;)

 - Get a binary release of Zope and unpack into
   /usr/local for example.
 - Install Apache if you haven't got it already.
 - Do a search for 'apache' on Zope.org and locate
   the proxypass howto.
 - Read and implement proxypass.

Shouldn't take more than about 30 minutes. Magic no? ;)

[Zope] SAP DB with Zope?

2000-11-07 Thread Jonathan (ListServ Account)

Hi all,

Will be testing it myself shortly, but has anyone already hooked up Zope to
SAP DB? It has been open sourced recently, and there are Python interfaces
available (as well as Perl, JDBC, PHP, ODBC and C/C++). For those who are
not familiar with it: it's a high end database used for example with SAP
R/3 and has its roots in ADABAS D.

Check it out:
