Hmm, right, so then this might still be on-topic here ;-)
Maybe the right thing is for CMF to do a directlyProvides() call in wrapUser?

I'd say that's a typo. The referenced IMember probably means the
IMemberData interface, which does exist.
Sounds good. Existing member implementations might have to be updated to declare
themselves implementing that interface. For example, remember
are set as
properties of a MemberData instance under portal_membership. The
relevant code is in CMFCore/MemberDataTool.py. Check the security
settings of portal_membership.
Failing that, grep the CMFCore and CMFDefault directories for other
occurences of setProperties.

You might look into the pythonproducts product which was just

That goes too far IMO. Opt-in is a pain, but if you remove it, we need

Presumably it's the same problem.
I had a look at the tests for CMFCore and CMFDefault, but there don't
seem to be any tests for SkinnableObjectManager at all.
Ouch!

Chris McDonough suggested an interesting way to do a poor-man's ESI: use
Apache's server side includes.
That's an interesting idea. On the Zope side, you'd just have to set
up your templates to spit out html containing SSI directives, obviously
no problem.
But what's involved in the Apache
.
If this is a deliberate restriction, can anybody explain the rationale?
Or is it, as I suspect, an oversight?
