[ZWeb] ANN: zope wiki edits now require authentication

2011-05-13 Thread Simon Michael
Dear all,

edit spam across the wiki.zope.org wikis, gradually increasing over
the years, has reached multiple incidents per day, multiple days per
month. Current cleanup procedures take too much time (and are not 100%
thorough - spam remains in history) and I don't want to spend time
developing cleverer defenses. Therefore, from today making changes on
any of the wiki.zope.org wikis requires authentication (a zwiki
username cookie is no longer enough.)

This marks the transition of our wikis from those early, lowest-
possible-barrier-to-entry wiki days, to the modern era of mandatory
access control. :-/

Since there is no member management software in place to allow you to
self-register, to get a login you'll need to either

- ask an admin to make one for you. The current wiki.zope.org admin
users are: Simon Michael, Andreas Jung, Baiju Muthukadan, Sascha
Welter, Michael Haubenwallner, Fred Drake, Jim Fulton, Ken Manheimer,
Kevin Teague.

- use this generic login: zope, zope. The downside of using this a lot
is that edit history will become less useful.

Also, on wikis using the default skin (all but the zope3 wiki), to
trigger a login prompt you'll need to manually visit some restricted
url. Eg append /editform to any page, like so:
http://wiki.zope.org/zope2/Zope2Wiki/editform

I hope this will stop the spam, and not inconvenience editors too
much. Please let me know if you have authenticated and still can't edit.

If you are interested in improving this setup, doing any other
maintenance of the zope wikis, or taking over as zope wiki czar -
please step forward! I'd be happy to mentor and provide all needed
support.

Best,
-Simon

[ZWeb] an idea for the wiki

2009-01-30 Thread Simon Michael
new.zope.org is looking good. Stimulated by the pending z3 release I was
thinking about using the styles to give the z3 wiki a facelift, to
create more coherency, similar to djangoproject.org where everything is
integrated under a consistent skin.

Then I realised it's a plone site, so you could just move the wiki in
and it should acquire the skin without further effort. I think it might
look pretty good. What do folks think about trying this ?

[ZWeb] Re: [wiki.zope.org] update

2008-02-04 Thread Simon Michael

I did this:

- investigated a little - we are running three zope servers in a xen
instance with 512M ram, debian stable, apache 2.2.3-4. The wikis are
running zope 2.10.3

- a 14-day pack of wiki.zope.org (3G - 300M)

- installed a cron task to check wiki.zope.org zope size every minute
and restart it if it goes over 350M

- upgraded to Zwiki 0.61

- (tried to) co-subscribe http://wiki.zope.org/WikiZopeOrg and zope-
web so I can

post updates in one place. I'll stop this if it becomes a problem.

- left the 3 zope threads with cache-size 3 as-is, for now

[ZWeb] [AboutThisSite] new wiki.zope.org server

2007-04-17 Thread Simon Michael
Zopistas - I'm pleased to announce that wiki.zope.org has moved to a more
powerful server. You should now or very soon see wiki.zope.org pointing to
194.109.109.175. This is also the machine hosting foundation.zope.org,
kindly provided by amaze.nl.

We are in shake-down mode - all wikis should be working as before,
including mail-out and mail-in. There is one open issue - some pages are
giving UnicodeDecodeError (http://zwiki.org/1330 , help welcome) - please
report any others.

More details:

ZSyncer worked like a champ here. I used it to transfer all the wikis over
in one shot last week, did the testing, and when dns changed today, did one
more sync to transfer the recent changes.

old server: 256M, 4-cpu VPS, zope 2.9.4, zeo, cache-size 3000
new server: 768M, 1-cpu VPS, zope 2.10.3, non-zeo for now, cache-size 3

I haven't measured much speedup of transactions on the new server - a mild
slowdown, in fact, for reasons unknown (single vs 4 cpus ?). But zope
finally has enough ram to breathe, so I expect things to feel quicker, and
much more consistent. Restarts now take 10s instead of 3 minutes, and will
hopefully be a rare manual event.

Yay! Thanks to Martijn Faassen, Bas van der Linden, and Andrew Sawyer for
their help.

I am available for consulting work! Check out the updated http://joyful.com
to find out more.

Best,

Re: [ZWeb] zope.org wiki without cookies?

2006-12-14 Thread Simon Michael

Hi Christian, all

Zwiki always tried to keep login effort to a minimum; until now, the
lightweight optional username cookie has been enough. (It's no longer
optional on wiki.zope.org of course.)

There has been talk of moving up to the next level, ie some kind of real
authentication and member management, partly prompted by one or two
persistent vandal incidents (swiftly reverted by Michael H.). I'm undecided
myself, but do you have any ideas for a good, low-labour setup ?

I'm aware of two Zope 2 products that manage membership - Plone and the
venerable exUserFolder.

Ok, I have simplified the redirect message.

I promised d2m I would post apache rewrite rules here and request

corresponding page in the new location and I think that can be done.

You can see the old wiki urls at http://wiki.zope.org/OldWikis . The new
urls are http://wiki.zope.org/SAMEFOLDERID (except ComponentArchitecture is

[ZWeb] Re: FAQ writing tips (Re: combining all zope2 FAQs into one big one at wiki.zope., org/zope2)

2006-11-07 Thread Simon Michael

cc'ing from zope list:
PS, here's a word of warning to FAQ writers from my own experience, a
trap to avoid:

You start writing answers for questions - it's so easy and tempting -
later you find better answers out on the web, even elsewhere in the
same wiki, but now you have a big, verbose body of duplicated docs
that's too good to throw away but not quite valuable enough to attract
a lot of maintenance. Result: stagnation.

How to avoid this ? Maybe keeping these goals in mind will help:

- research, link, gather, consolidate docs first; write new ones as
last resort

- keep answers in the faq short and to the point, link to best
detailed docs elsewhere

- avoid unnecessary duplication. Use the contents link to see what's
in the zope2 and other zope wikis. Refactor the wiki content
aggressively when appropriate.

Also, long wiki pages are less fun to edit than short ones, use an
external editor for FAQ work to avoid this pain. Emacs users, try
rst-mode.el.

[ZWeb] wiki skin

2006-10-29 Thread Simon Michael

Chris Withers wrote:
Is it going to move to the great new style that's been used for the Zope
3 wiki?

Chris - I have several thoughts on that which I wanted to air -

I took some time to get used to the new skin. I like it a lot - great work
Kevin (and Tom).

(In fact I'd like to include a generic version in Zwiki as a wiki template
- are the authors ok with this ? I will make it as different as you think
necessary to avoid confusion with the zope wikis.)

I'm also quite fond of the basic Zwiki skin, which is adapted to my needs.
For jumping around between many wikis, many pages, and doing serious wiki
gardening, I find it less distracting, also the page hierarchy is clearer.
For some people it will also be faster. So I wanted to leave it in place
for at least a few days to give people a chance to see how it works for
browsing these wikis.

I also like that big Zope planet floating in the background of the zope2
wiki. The sense of wide-open spaciousness. And I like that it's visually
distinct from the zope3 wiki, so you know at a glance where you are.

I have been guessing the consensus will be to use the new skin across all
the wikis, though. But I think we definitely need some way to differentiate
them.

Just now, motivated by Martijn's talk at DZUG (recommended!) I started to
move the templates from /zope3 up to the root folder, then I realized the
skin has zope3 wiki stuff hard-coded. So some more work is needed before
the skin can be reused. Kevin, I wonder what your thoughts/plans are (feel
free to try them out).

[ZWeb] Re: cut over ?

2006-10-21 Thread Simon Michael

I dumped some process notes at http://zwiki.org/Zope3WikiMove .

Here are some questions I had about the configuration at zope3.zwiki.org :

- default markup ?

Structured Text will remain the default unless there is a consensus to
promote rst or something else for this wiki.

- show subtopics ?

Zwiki's automatic subtopics links are currently enabled. Generally I find
they reduce manual work and increase visibility of the wiki content (having
them is like proximity radar, not having them is like tunnel vision). But
this wiki's content is structured to work without them, and you might
prefer to just turn off that feature.

- max_anonymous_links, max_identified_links

An anti-spam feature; anonymous users and identified users (who have set a
username in options) may only post a certain maximum number of external
links per edit. This stops a lot of automated spam, but can also be
annoying. Currently these are set to 0 and unlimited.

- WikiName links ?

Should bare WikiNames be linked ? A lot of the wiki uses these links.
Currently enabled.

- single bracket links ?

Enabled.

- mail out edits or comments by default ?

The old wiki mails out all edits to subscribers. The new one will let
subscribers choose all edits or just the comments and new pages, probably.
Which should be configured for the current subscribers ?

- mail-in ?

Should new pages and comment replies via mail-in be allowed ? Currently
disabled.

- webdav, ftp access ?

Currently disabled except for managers, probably. External editor is
enabled for all.

Cheers

- rating stars, on or off ?

I think any kind of user rating data is a good idea and might be put to

arguably we won't get a useful quantity of votes any time soon, they may
look clunky in IE, and so could be considered clutter.

Thanks Fred, Kevin. A quick comment on subtopics -

Showing all the subtopics makes the home page rather overwhelming. I

Right now it is, I agree. I'll just note some alternatives:

- sometimes that's just a sign that the hierarchy needs rearranging. For
example those children could be moved up to the top level (leaving
FrontPage with no children).

- on a particular page you can customize the depth of subtopics shown, as
at http://zopewiki.org/ZopeWiki . That can be good on a front page, though
on the down side it's inconsistent and might add confusion.

- if someone out there is motivated to make collapse/expand work, start at
 http://zwiki.org/HowToMakeContentsExpandable

would be tempted to show the entire tree under a link labelled 'site
 map'

That's the contents link.
