"Working Exchange offline"
By Adesh Rampat

Users who access the company's network remotely (at home or on the
road) will want to read mail. Depending on your remote setup, staying
connected may prevent other dial-up users from accessing the network,
especially in smaller organizations with fewer available telephone
lines. To resolve this problem, you can enable offline email usage
for users with dial-up connections.

Here's how to enable offline usage. Do these steps on the client.

Setting up for offline usage:

- In Microsoft Outlook go to Tools/services
- Select Microsoft Exchange server
- Click the properties button, and then select the Advanced tab. The
settings for enabling off line folder use will be displayed. Accept
default settings.

Establishing a connection:

- In Microsoft Outlook go to Tools/Services
- Then select Microsoft Exchange server
- Click on the General tab
- Select "Manually control connection state" radio button and Choose
the connection type when starting check box

When the user next logs on to the Exchange server, a dialog box will
appear prompting him either to download mail or work off line.

Some users may prefer to synchronize with their mailboxes
automatically. This can be done by selecting the Remote Mail tab in
the Microsoft Exchange Server Properties dialog, and selecting any of
the options that will work best for a user.
