Microsoft released software add-ons to its .NET software that meet the Web Services Security (WS-S) standard. Microsoft's Web Services Enhancements (WSE) 1.0 also adhere to the latest standards for message routing and transmitting file attachments via Web services and are available for Visual Studio .NET for free.

Microsoft -- an open source company? (ZDNet)
It's a shame that Microsoft's Shared Source program -- the licensing framework that Microsoft uses to make portions of its source code widely available -- has gotten so little serious ink, writes one columnist, because it achieves almost all the important objectives of open-source. The only real problem with it is that Microsoft doesn't use it widely enough.
