NEWS
MS buys into virtualization firm (InternetNews)
Microsoft has connected with Connectix. MS has bought part of that company, namely Connectix's Virtual PC and Virtual Server products and hired on a bunch of its employees. Connectix has been trying to turn itself into a server virtualization software maker -- something Microsoft is interested in because it sweetens the Windows Server 2003 pot by letting NT 4.0 customers keep their old applications running as virtual machines and paves the way to an upgrade.

NEWS
Peek-a-boo! I see Beta 2 (Wininformant)
Now you see it, now you don't! Microsoft on Wednesday gave MSDN Universal subscribers access to a bunch of Office 2003 Beta 2 downloads, including, among other things, SharePoint Portal Server 2003. Beta testers haven't even gotten their kits yet, so something odd was going on. The company yanked the downloads after a few hours, and there's no word how many people downloaded the software.

THE MISSING LINK
My fridge just threw spam at me!

You can't even gaze into a crystal ball without seeing a bunch of spam. One professor says that so-called "smart appliances," like fridges with Internet access, are the great spam monkeys of the future and will be the next generation of inbox cloggers. Wired appliances will be able to e-mail you and tell you that you're out of milk or that you need a new part for your dying air conditioner. That sounds convenient, but the professor says you're gonna wake up and smell a lot more spam -- and it may stink.
