NEWS
Microsoft alters XP to please DOJ (Reuters)
Microsoft is throwing a bone to the U.S. government -- that bone is a change to Windows XP that will better spotlight a button that users may click to remove Internet Explorer and use other browsers. MS says it's doing this to keep the Justice Department happy, although critics say the change is insignificant and won't do anything to foster competition.

Mark Minasi's new book, "Mastering Windows Server 2003," will be coming out soon. And we'd like to offer you the free download of chapter 1 before the book even hits the shelves! In his new book, Mark updates his best-selling "Mastering Windows 2000 Server, Fourth Edition" to cover Microsoft's upcoming server release in his trademark clear, step-by-step fashion. And where many books focus solely on one version of an OS, "Mastering Windows Server 2003" is written both for the 2000 and 2003 administrator.

ASK LAURA HUNTER
What characters are illegal in naming standards?
Dear Laura:
I read somewhere that we should not use the underscore character in any of our naming standards for directories, folders, security groups, etc., due to the parsing algorithms in Windows 2000. Do you know if this is really true?

THE MISSING LINK
Naughty Nittanies warned about file sharing

Penn State University -- home of the Nittany Lions and peer-to-peer fears. School provost Rodney Erickson this week sent an e-mail to more than 110,000 students, faculty and staff, warning them that downloading copyrighted stuff from the Internet could mean a trip out of the ivory tower and into the cement-floored jail cell. Erickson sent a similar e-mail three years ago, when Napster was king of the file-sharing world.
