LEAD STORY
Microsoft partner show to focus on perimeter security  (SearchWin2000.com)
Microsoft is expected to use its partner conference as a forum to advance the use of perimeter security. That would be a departure from its longtime promotion of patch management as the key to software security.

MS's Muglia details perimeter security plan (CRN)
Securing Windows has become Microsoft's top priority, according to Bob Muglia, the head of Microsoft's enterprise management unit. In an interview, Muglia said Microsoft's "securing the perimeter" initiative includes a planned release in 2004 of a beefier version of its Software Update Service (SUS), as well as marching orders to PC-making partners to turn the Windows Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) on before shipping Windows XP-based machines. More details of the initiative are to be spelled out at Microsoft's partner conference this week, Muglia said.

Forrester alters research policy over MS flap (CNET)
The CEO of Forrester Research has altered the analyst firm's "integrity policy" after an uproar over a recent research report that was sponsored -- and later highly touted -- by Microsoft. Forrester will now forbid vendor sponsors of research studies from publicizing the results. In the controversial Microsoft-sponsored report, Forrester's Giga unit concluded that Windows is cheaper than Linux for developing certain programs.

THE MISSING LINK
Big Blue installs anti-klutz technology

IBM has come up with a computer that the Crash Test Dummies would love. The company has loaded its ThinkPad notebooks with a chip that senses when the computer is accelerating. And when a computer accelerates, it's rarely a good thing. The quick-thinking chip acts like a kind of airbag -- it activates right before impact and protects the hard drive's read/write head until the commotion is over. So go ahead, drop that ThinkPad! It's OK. But if you spill coffee on the keyboard, you're still hosed.
