This may have already been addressed - You have to log onto the Win98
box with the acccount name & password the Samba server understands.
 Also, as mentioned, you'll need to enable encrypted paasswords and
point to a samba password file. (on the vanilla RH7.1 boxes I've set up,
you'll have to touch that file before setting passwords) Then, on the
server, do:

smbpasswd -a joeuser # not necessarily matching their logon password

to build Samba's password database.

Don't forget "service smb restart"  ;)
