There was a lawsuit against PHILIPS but also against the HP of the time
since the HP was also a PHILIPS. I got a new PHILIPS drive in replacement
for my HP. So it is hard to make decisions about a vendor because the
vendor can change major things between products.

One thing I consider in deciding on what cdrw vendor to purchase is how
good is there support. Do they have firmware updates. Are the manuals
online. The firmware issue is important as things change and the vendors
who give frequent firmware updates at least fix things. An example is
Plextor. They have good firmware updates. Iomega which OEM'ed the
Plextor 12x cdrw drive has NOT had a update yet even thought Plextor has
had many for the same drive. Al IOMEGA has to do is release the Plextor
firmware updates. Now TDK also OEM's this same drive and they have
released firmware updates via their web site. I will not buy IOMEGA
because of non support of their products.
