What about a braindead aristorcratic ISP that is price gouging both on
the modem cost, and the totally irrational logic of charging more
for a connection based on whether a modem is USB or ethernet? Do they
have any explanation for this? I think the frustrations are pointed
the wrong way. I realize you have no other choices...and have to deal
with things as they are.
These ethernet modems occasionally appear online retail. The retail
difference is ~$50. The wholesale difference to the ISP is much less.
Also, there are a number of other modems with the same Alcatel chipset
that are totally compatible and can be had on ebay for $50, maybe
less, if someone wants to go through this hassle.
The Alcatel USB has plenty of problems even on supported platforms,
notably longstanding problems with (most|all?) VIA chipsets that cause
various wierdness and excessive power draw from the USB bus that
cause random disconnects on some MBs. Maybe the Linux drivers are
better???
