If that's supposed to be ls -la /dev/dsp, it is not a character
device.

Also, since ownership is root.root, your ordinary user could access
this file (and neither if it were a valid device). Or do you use
xmms as root?

Did you keep the previous kernel?
Did you reboot after installing the new kernel?
