I have the exact same problem and am looking for some help. I have only
one box, an old P2/350 with a 'small' hard drive (10GB). Being a
total newbie, I let the installer partition the drive using the default
config. Here's a shot of my partitions:

> df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda8 250M 251M 0 100% /
/dev/hda1 50M 3.5M 44M 8% /boot
/dev/hda6 3.5G 97M 3.1G 3% /home
/dev/hda5 3.5G 1.1G 2.2G 33% /usr
/dev/hda7 250M 137M 101M 58% /var

Logrotate and a couple other cron jobs complain to me every morning
about the lack of space.

I have tried all that I know to remove the chaff from the / mount and
am fresh out of ideas. My last desperation idea to repartition the drive
and start over. So I am looking any kind of tips, tricks, you name it.

I have this box running semi-remotely (on the other side of the office)
and use Webmin (www.webmin.com) for all that I need to do. However,
while I was setting up and learning Linux, I had been using Gnome as
my 'windows-like' interface. I suspect that I may have some gnome-junk in
there.

Thanks for all your help!

Dennis Lewis
