i was only able to delete them by mv-ing them to another partition. after
moving them, then / was only 45% full, instead of 100% and then i was able
to start kde and then i deleted them from file manager (didn't move them to
trash...i'm ignoring the trash from now on!). it wasn't a fun night last
night.
