All, I was using Open ssh 2.9p2 on Solaris 8 without prngd turned on. I have just compiled Open ssh with prngd and my ssh commands return much faster.
Preliminary results show that what used to take 3+ seconds now take between 1 and 1.5, using either sar or date to test with on the server. For example: Command Before prngd After prngd ssh hostname date 3 to 7 seconds .84 to 1.35 ssh hostname sar 3 to 5 .84 to 1.35 prngd makes a whoppin' big difference. Also, only ssh needs to be replaced, not sshd. This was reproducable with two different servers, an E10K and a Ultra 10. Same numbers on both platforms.
