Well, MS certifications are no more "evil" than any others. If you're at all interested in work involving Windows, then certification is going to be a good idea. If you're completely uninterested in working with Windows, then it would be a "waste of time and money"... :-) A CCNA is pretty easy to get. I think COMPTIA has some certs that mean a little something, but I'm not sure... I took the A+ like 6 years ago, and then the Network+ because I got a voucher for the exam... :-) I hear the RHCE is quite in vogue now, too, and I believe the test is or includes hands-on. I'm sure Sun has some sort of Solaris certification, but that won't be cheap. But, bottom line, certs can only get you in the door of HR.
