Both of the below will work, though lots of folks I know run the linksys LAN side to a switch(little 8 port). Can save you some cash, especially if you know you are going to need more than 4 ports. Buy a 1 WAN, 1 LAN linksys or dlink, buy a netgear 8 port switch, away you go. OR....
(I've zero experience with smoothwall, though am about to go look, so....) What I used to do was run a dual nic'd linux box, running ipchains, ipfw, portsentry, tripwire and snort. I'd set the portsentry to drop connections into tcp wrappers if someone touched a port....changed that the first day, as thats a really good way to get DoS'd. But something along those lines would work for you as well, though again you will need a switch if you have more than 1 host. t On Thu, 14 Feb 2002, Rick Bestany wrote: > Buy an old Pentium 100 with 32 MB RAM and a 2 GB hard drive at a computer > show for about $25. > > Put a couple of NICs in it. > > Download the ISO copy of Smoothwall from www.smoothwall.org and burn it to > CD. > > Install on the old Pentium 100 > > Surf fast and safely. > > > > > -----Original Message----- > > From: Earle Lyons [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > > Sent: Wednesday, February 13, 2002 10:02 PM > > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] > > Subject: Re: Home Networking > > > > > > I suggest looking into a Linksys 4-port (or more) Cable/DSL router.
