Nick,
I use a Sonicwall (www.sonicwall.com) SOHO2 (they are now up to SOHO3).
Off of that I use a Linksys 5 port switch where I have 3 machines connected.
I also have a Netgear Ethernet to Phone Line bridge
(www.netgear.com/categories.asp?xrp=7&yrp=17) connected and I have one of my
daughters machines connected to that in her room over the phone lines.
Everything has worked flawlessly. I would highly recommend any of these
products. The nice thing about the SOHO is its flexibility in filtering.
You can filter traffic by IP, port, URL and finally key word. I also
subscribe to the Web Filter list that is available for the SOHO. I do
believe the list is maintained by Cyber Patrol and is one of the most
extensive lists of sites available.
On the other hand I have also been looking at setting up a firewall
using an old machine running IPCop (www.ipcop.org). It looks like it is
very flexible like the SOHO is although it doesn't off the same level of
filtering.
I used to have the Linksys 4 port router. I would stay away from
these. They are better than nothing but, NOT MUCH BETTER :) I would stick
with something designed from the start to be a firewall whether it be a
firewall appliance or software designed for the purpose. The best piece of
advice I can give you though is to religiously watch those logs :)
Hope this helps!
Bob
