I use a four port Linksys router, and a cheap hub, and run up to eight
machines in my house at times. I have been very satisfied with it.

Be aware that there is a known minor vulnerability with SNMP on the Linksys
router that could allow outsiders to collect some information about your
internal topology. The Linksys is reasonably flexible about letting you
enable/disable features, and set up ACLs.

If you use a wireless LAN, be sure to turn on WEP encryption, and periodic
key exchange. WEP encryption is not completely secure, but it should be
good enough for home use if you change keys. If you're really paraniod you
can use one of the WLAN cards that has security extensions, but they tend to
be more expensive, and can have compatability problems with various WLAN
manufactures.

If you want a lower cost option, use Linux, but it is more setup and admin
effort than a Linksys.

Best of luck,
Gawain Tomlinson
